New Golf R - Part 2

Featured Replies

This guy does go on a bit about the DSG. Yes it's a good box but not perfect imo.

My manual hatch, had a slick and precise box, which I enjoyed immensely. So not sure where he is getting the negative opinions about it. Wish VW offered it in the R Estate, missing Launch Control, etc no not me. Countryroad use ,for me the manual is the bees knees and enhances the R experience. However, each to their own.

I've just lost an erudite reply to your comments, (crappy lap-top keyboard...........), but for us, a DSG enhances the driving experience, in almost any car, (even in some diesels....), whereas reverting to a manual just increases the workload & takes us back into the dark ages.........

(Especially in a LHD rental, trying to get out of an airport whilst deciding how to get to your holiday home in a 5-speed manual diesel Octavia!)

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

Literally goes past the bottom of my road there when he drops into Buxton. The rest of them are all roads i like to play on :D

Can tell he's never been before, he says 'Glossop, seems like a nice place'. Hmm.. yeah, park the R up for 5 minutes outside the Manor Estate where he was there, n it'd be gone :D. It's a ****hole :D

What a bore he was.

What a bore he was.

wasn't he just. I kept waiting for him to take off, then it might of been worth watching. Makes it more interesting when you know the road too.

But no, that never happened. :D

One in the dry the other in the wet.

Silly question coming up..........

Now that we have 1k miles on our estate I'm pushing the loud pedal a little more.

I've noticed some strange noises from the exhaust system on upshifts, is the "DSG Fart" & if so how is it produced / any particular throttle opening or rpms?

TIA, DC

DC,

Running in what mode?

DC,

Running in what mode

I'm using individual, everything normal except steering & suspension in comfort & soundaktor in eco modes.

Not experimented much with race or eco modes yet, & probably won't!

Run mine about 90% Normal mode, with occasional Race mode.

Very very rarely in Eco mode now, which was similar in my R Hatch previously.

Your hearing is obviously far more sensitive than mine.

I.e. road noise (tyres) Soundaktor etc.

Shame you couldn't present a video, with exhaust note under acceleration and also the road noise in cabin.

We've had the Soundaktor turned down to half & the throttle response tweaked today (thanks Gizmo), but it's still a bit noisy, especially on concrete motorways.

It's been pretty wet, especially on the way home so not heard any farts, just a bit of drone at normal (legal) speeds, but just made it to 35 mpg.

Sorry about the lack of videos but we don't own the right devices............

When the boot (?) is totally full, it is a bit quieter, so some sound proofing is called for, probably on the boot floor.

Tried Eco mode for about a mile yesterday under acceleration, sounds like a sleeping pussy cat, Normal mode an slightly angry dog and Race mode very angry lion. Soundaktor on factory settings. Love it,but I'm an old deaf fart. However, umderload in Normal mode has farts and a nice Warble under downshifts. But DC , as you know I'm totally biased!

Just seen a Golf R being used by a driving instructor!

Might be a little much for people that cant drive?

I do wonder if its DSG or manual

Think the punter take up for an Auto Licence would be quite low, so manual me thinks - well done DI ,you need to get some pleasure after all that stress.

Perhaps soon there will be a DI with a Focus RS MK3, offering drift mode training for the kids! Frighten the C...p out of the examiner though.

There is a thread on Pistonheads about an Instuctor wanting one.

& i see a Instructor big upping that he has a Golf R-Line, wooooooo.

Good that VW had them all set up ready for Driving School Mode.

Being a driving instructor seems to be the job to be in if you want a decent car.

Maybe its just because theyre of course set against the business.

So my life with the Golf R may well be coming to an end, after 2 1/2 years of totally enjoyable,   reliable and fun ownership.

Now moving on to my second coming of youth and with  potentially even more fun and excitement expected. Will update in a few weeks.

Still something both practical & fun, or a silly toy..................?

DC

David,

Practicality not quite so high  on  priority check list, currently. So  this old fart has decided to have a slightly less practical, but even more fun machine. After some exciting test drives over the last few weeks.

You've seen the light and are trading in for an M140i? Lol ;-)

Must have my Ray-Bans on Tom! lol

So is it a VW Group car that only gets built in Wolfsburg, no place else?

Hardtop or Convertible?

EDIT.

Doh, that would be Stuttgart.  Silly me.
