New Golf R - Part 2

Featured Replies

I take it that again that insult is pointed in my direction.... :dull:

Christ all mighty!!... I just make aware to "R" owners who drive their cars In ECO mode that the 4WD is permanently locked into 2WD in that mode, & point out areas that can be improved as VW are cheapskates at the factory. As I drive a MK7 Golf estate my car shares over 75% of the same parts as the "R" so can comment properly on user experience......what is it again that you drive???... :D

As for being "Wanna be" like I said before if they made it in a manual in my colour I would go around to the dealers with a briefcase full of cash & pay there & then, but is it worth £7,270 more than my car to the same spec?? Not really IMHO...especially if I want to keep my licence....

You don't need to lose your licence to have a vehicle a little bit of power. It's all about the acceleration and corners.

Thats where the difference between a FWD Golf which looks a little sporty and the full fat version really hows itself.

And i drive a T5 all day every day, a Fabia for my own things. The SE 70bhp HTP actually. It is what it says on the tin, and when i want a little fun i jump on the Aprilia Tuono.

But i wouldnt tell anybody with a VRS how to drive it either :D.

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

Now read article fully - pretty crap assessment ,a bit like the writers(Ben Barry) ongoing Long-term reports for the R Hatch. imo.

Ah. Been a while since ive caught up on this thread.

Now i remember why :D.

DefenderBen, nice R. Looks good in the white!

Drive YOUR car how YOU wish :D. Not how some wanna be R owner tells you to :D :D.

You're not wrong  I drive my little 1er in eco mode quite often. If I'm on the motorway trawl and just cruising, why not, it saves fuel. makes the car more relaxed and comfortable to drive (gear shifts super smooth and early change up) and if I need to get out of trouble, simply plant my foot and the car gives it full beans anyway - not that I feel the need to do 155mph in Eco-mode :) I've been driving over he Snake Pass a bit recently and sometimes when it was raining used the car in Comfort mode (normal mode if you like) as the softer dampers help traction a little out of slippy corners, other days I use Sport for a spot more fun. Horse for courses and it's nice to have the option of swapping horses mid journey :)

Exactly.

If we were all in Race mode all the time it'd be even more bonkers out there. The conditions have to be right snd you have to be in the right frame of mind, in the right place atvthe right time.

And the Tuono would of defo killed me by now. No shadow of a doubt :D.

Could boot a 150bhp golf anytime though.

Ahaa :D. I joke. Just on a wind up now ;):D

Thanks for confirming your modus operandi, which can also explain your high post count.

Clearly your sense of humour is up there with the best.

Whens the R being delivered anyway?

Keep it in Race mode though yeh.

It'll work best for you, has extra safety benefits and gives you more control. Plus it wont coast so much downhill.

So many thanks to Jerry for taking me out in his R this evening, very impressed with the car as a package, and my god the fuel economy in eco mode...

All joking aside it is a really good all round car and my god does it take off in race mode.

Can see what all the fuss is about, won't sell my 530 for one but if I was looking for a newer car it would be a toss up between the golf and the baby bmw having now been in both.

Golf R

Often copied. Never equalled.

From £31,185

Start building 3 door

Start building 5 door

What's included?

Delivery to your door in 12 weeks, not 12 months plus, like the competition   . Plus VW don't increase the base price twice in less than 12months ,as some do, when they have you on the end of their hook!! (approx. + 7%)

The speed of improvement in the Hot Hatch market ,will probably mean that the next "best in class" will be here in under a 12 months.

Which manufacturer will it be?

Is that a personal plate not yet on the DVLA Database, or Insurance Data Base, or just false plates.?

Something to do with it staying in 4 wheel drive.

I dno.

I was taking the **** out of Fabarav. He seems keen on reading about such things, he'll tell you (:

Not sure mate.

There will be something a miss though, given they're doing things like that in it :D.

Good car for the job i guess. Enough room, doesnt stand out so doesnt draw attention, and 300 quiet horses to whisk them away.

You are never sure if they are robbers / ramraiders, or just senior citizens in Race Mode.

Baseball Hats on or Toupes, they all look the same in the Mk7 Q cars.

Room in the rear for 50" Flat Screen or Golf Clubs and electric trolley.

A bit tight in the hatch but more in the estate.

What are the extra safety benefits?

Haldex unit permanently locks out the rear wheels when ECO mode is selected, so car is in FWD drive mode only. Earlier posters were stating they spend most of their time driving their "R" in ECO mode for fuel economy reasons, I just pointed out that the 4WD safety net is not there when in ECO mode.

Exactly, "fabiamk2SE" doesn't know much about the Golf or the engineering details, yet likes to come on this thread & troll basically.

Thanks gents, we won't be bothering with ECO just yet, 'cos do like the idea of the AWD safety net.......

I don't like the coasting experience at all & if you want the fake engine noise reduced just use individual mode to mix & match the options.

If we had wanted better economy, we wouldn't have bought an R........., & SWMBO would still be driving her vRS!

DefenderBen..

If it wasnt for the wheels, it could be you!

In all seriousness though. Im not surprised they're getting used for that. No doubt the R is stolen too ofc.

So that's it then ,even thieves prefer the Golf R from a Focus RS in DRIFT mode. Must be down to its low profile look and extra storage space and pace.

Plus the Police don't stop silver surfing / bald headed old farts, going for the Bank Raids with large drills in the back and driving a Golf.lol

Thieves were obviously up to speed with the model, otherwise they would have gone for an R Estate - evenmore space and also Launch Control.

Did the Police mention if the hatch  was Manual or DSG !?

What Car and Auto Express Cash Machine and Armed Robber Car of the Year 2016 is the Mercedes A45 AMG, only Which have a VW, Audi or Skoda in the Top 5.

Still safer than your run of the mill 1.4 that you keep blabbing on about though.

And no. I was just making a point that its their car to drive how they like. Not how somebody on a forum thread tells them to, which ironically doesnt even own one.

You might aswel go on the Lamborghini forum and start telling them how to drive their Aventador's.

It seems that way haha. Maybe the Estates will be taken more when theres more of them about. Most R's around here are hatches. Give it time haha.

Yeah i think they like them because they dont stand out and are relatively quick. Most people wont even think about what they've just seen, it was just a Golf.

No mate no mentions of that. I cant reg check it either because it doesnt come up for some reason :S
