Then it was apparently just one of those things, Law of Averages,  nothing to see here move along....

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

Might just be looking at a low cost, low mileage, good nick at around £20 k for my Winter car.

Oh! It might just be an R manual in contrast to the Boxster. Fun whatever the weather.

The Search is on!

Not a bad choice at 4.00pm today, must be open to hard negotiating

22 options between £19k >£23k.

The first UK review that I've read on the facelifted ,increased powered ,re-gigged 4wd Audi S3 by Autocar.

Interesting, better, worse or just different than an R?

I'm still wondering if I should move on from the Superb & SWMBO doesn't fancy an A4 Avant!)

David,

Very well appointed car, cosmetically looks great but  not a more comfortable driving place than the R. Loaded with all the latest technology , its display on the dashboard (impressive) but I don't posses a degree in the latest computer science to operate it.   K.I.S.S. for a Clean /clear and effective driver information display for me - for me R wins out.

As mentioned in the final paragraph of the Autocar review, the R may be 10 bhp on power plant but the Golfs sharpness in throttle response and still better handling ,so wins the day for me .

However, the latest S3 is closer that the previous model . Why is the Audi engineering team off the pace compared to the VWR team

Still a nice place to be , for day to day commute & family use, as well as the cross country blast ,when appropriate imo.

Just noticed that on a lot of the latest Rs delivered, that Pirelli P Zeros are being fitted, along side Contis and Bridgestone, I wonder if they are any quieter, as well as improved grip, economy  and life?

Keith.

Thanks for your thoughts.

If (& it's a big if.....) I bought an A3 / S3 Avant it would be to replace the Superb, & we would still keep the R estate if only 'cos SWMBO really likes it!

She thinks that the logical replacement would be a Superb 3 280, probably an estate to maximise the carrying capacity (why do we need this?) 'cos

we are familiar with Skoda / VW's quirks & wouldn't have to worry about switches & functions when we swap cars.

Good logic & hard to argue with but the new Superb is wide enough (when compared with a Mk 2) to be a problem in carparks.

If, (another big if....) the Octy 3 facelift were to incorporate a better quality interior, up to Superb standards then a next generation vRS Estate with many

options would fit the practical car + a bit of performance requirement quite well, but I suspect that VW will always keep Skoda quality below their own products.

I/we need to decide if we want a decent sized boot (yes) + lot's of rear leg-room (maybe not) for "my" car.

As we get older it's possible that a "tall car" would be useful, but they don't appeal to us at all. We will peek at the Kodiaq, but id you want a 2.0 TSi you have to

have the 7 seat version, & live with 180ps, which wouldn't feel quite the same as my 250 ps Superb!

The S3 that you've driven is quite reasonably priced, 'tis a pity that it's about a 250 mile round trip from here!

Thanks again for your thoughts, David C.

Who would have believed it, yep my  3rd Golf R mk7 has arrived. This time a 5dr, Hatch with manual box, in Lapiz Blue with 19" DCC.etc.

John999boy, think I would sooner have the 1st R400 mk7 or 8 when it arrives in the UK.

Freebie of course !!

Have you changed again?

Ben,

My bucket list ideal pairing, within my budget ,for the UK seasons.Fun,frolics and a hint of common sense.

Mk8 R400 might change that pairing but for the short-medium term this will do me fine.

Much like with the Golf R after being in production for 2 years after R&D and previous years of earlier models and VW still can not get Component Choice Manufacturing and Quality Control right.

This being the reason 100's of thousands are being recalled in the US for potential fuel leaks.

There are also safety recalls in the UK for the risk of fuel leaks.

Sorted? Can he now really enjoy it?

Pretty much my current Rs spec , except mine is the "driver manual" box for me.

Enjoy the new winter hack ;)

I need to get a car to the end of the warranty period before I look at a anothercar and ATM that is looking like a 330/335d touring but not for a little while, the SV is still doing everything I need :)

Winter hack, just 'cos it's a 4x4?

Tres Posh for a hack, but them I'm a poor pensioner.........

AFA a 330, we did peek & drive 2 x 330ds' before ordering a Golf Wagon.

Quite nice cars a long as you choose an ex-demo or very young used car, but not a great estate car.

Our old Octy 2 hatch had much more space in the boot, & probably more than our Golf too.

If you are still going to choose a diesel next time a Golf GDT Wagon might make sense, especially after a little tweaking....

Oettinger launch MK7 styling kits for Golf GTI,GTD & R.

http://www.evo.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/18609/volkswagen-oettinger-launch-performance-golf-styling-kits

Unfortunately no Oettinger stage 1 tune kit with full warranty cover by VW on new ordered cars.

Might just consider this for my latest R.

First Rollout

OETTINGER Golf R with 360 HP / 470 Nm (347 lb/ft)

The Golf R, is the most sporting version of the top seller from Wolfsburg, it offers OETTINGER the ideal basis for more power and sportiness.

The overall appearance is noticeably tautened with the OETTINGER Aerodynamic package.

Together with the powerful 360 HP / 470 Nm (347 lb/ft) stage one engine enhancements, the OETTINGER Golf R does not leave any wishes unfulfilled.

Not for me, I prefer a car to look totally stock.

I'd sooner spend the pennies on bigger / better brakes & performance tuning........

I don't fancy a "no-go slow-boat" (apologies to the beach-boys) but I do love "Q-Cars".

Each to their own.........

David, tend to agree mate, power, brakes stuff first. With minor body tweaks if subtle and pleasing to my eye.

Unfortunately no extra warranted go, shopping power or handling tweaks.
