New Golf R - Part 2

I know he does, and i know what 2015 and 16 S3's do so what is wrong with the one in the video or is it at high altitude in South Africa?

The review / speed test were undertaken in Pretoria ,which is 1400 metres above sea level. There is a factoring formula I've seen somewhere which calcs the approx. difference.

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

Just imagine how 'not quick' the 'de-tuned' ones were.

The VW Polo GTI Twinchargers were getting Remapped in South Africa when UK Tuners had still not cracked the ECU's,

different strokes for different folks.

The above spec comes in at just under £40k according to my source, VW don't like them going above that figure, for whatever reason.

No knowledge yet of attractive finance deals available. Might see that when configuration operating on UK website I guess.

The configurator is online now, enjoy planning your next Golf!

Just a bit too pricey for me, but I was trying to keep the list price under £40K.

(you needn't have added a winter pack as an option, it's included in the price on an R)

I priced a 5-door DSG to £38,170 (vw.co.uk/s/1uipg  should take you to my economy spec R). I've sent the code to my favourite VW sales guy, watch this space!

I did ask him for a price on a basic + metallic paint Seat Leon Cupra ST & he managed to take £4K off the £35K'ish list price.

I've since reconfigured an ST up to £36,905 list, & asked him for a new price.

Like the look of these mods ,Tune /performance not bad either.

By the time they get to MK7.5 models they should be perfect right out the showroom, and then they could do an optional Manufacturers Warrantied Performance Plus Pack. After all the CEO comes from a Porsche background.

George,

If they had used their brains at VW Engineering and Sales /Marketing they could have introduced Oettinger stage 1 360 bhp alongside the Oettinger body mod if desired, no brain imo with VW warranty no risk ! WTF, Makes up for all the hot air / BS of the executives about the R 400 Over 2 years ago.

Missed opportunity again, of course not allowed to out Audi  Audi I guess.

For:

Refined, great engines, spacious, cabin quality

Against:

More composed than fun to drive, new cabin tech is a pain to use

Interesting comment on Performance models :

And now to the Golf R. Wow. Where did this come from? Traditionally, adding an R badge and all-wheel drive to the Golf made it fast, sure, but also lethargic and heavy and altogether not as satisfying at the cheaper, more nimble GTI. That all changed for the Mk7. The 310bhp engine is linear, sharp, revs beautifully and sounds like an old Audi Quattro. The Haldex AWD resists understeer superbly, and will even give you a sense of the power being shifted to the rear axle on corner exit, unlike an Audi S3 or RS3. Okay, you might think this is all a bit last week now the Focus RS has got drift mode, but in the real world the Golf R is every bit as quick, and just as entertaining without needing wholesale switches of mode and character which also have a questionable effect on your insurance explanations should there be a sudden blockage in the talent department. Fast, chuckable, subtle and keenly priced, the Golf R is for TG’s money, the best all-round hot hatch in the world. Naturally, given the Golf is the best all-rounder, full stop.

Thanks Keith.

Autocar & Auto Express published their reviews, including the GTi model, both were quite complimentary, but with one strange point, the cars that they were testing were fitted with 6-speed DSG transmissions, rather than the 7-speed version which I thought was going to be the standard offer for the GTi & the R.

The thot plickens.............

Another excuse / justification to choose an R...........

  • 3 weeks later...

All the reports I have read say 7 SPD DSG box on the 7.5.

I see they are following Audi with the sweeping indicators too.

I'm waiting on some prices from Carwow, for a new 5 door, mk7.5 manual Golf R :)

Based on my current high spec car but the R mk7.5 facelift Orangewheels discounted. Inchcape dealership seem to be one of the biggest that use this discounter.

That's a £40k+ car (list = options) & is going to cost £500 pa to tax for the next 5 years...........

DC

Buyers are going to have to be very aware of that when they see a bargain of a £40,000 plus car combined RRP & Options on offer @ under £40,000 but that is not going to be first registered to after April in the UK.

If I can save £5k on the purchase price  of the £40 k car ,then I think I can handle £500  /annum, provided the extra is actually spent on improving road surfaces around the UK, with less alloy wheel damage etc. Time will tell. Perhaps one day ,Government will base road taxation on  annual mileage / road use as part of the calculation formula.

^^^ True,

but then they never really are £40,000 plus cars when you can get them for £35,000.

Truth is you are still paying enough that various people in the trade are making profits.

Badge snobbery has some paying £35,000 when even that is more than they are 'worth'.

"Badge snobbery has some paying £35,000 when even that is more than they are 'worth'."

George, even worse if you chase the badge at £60 k plus and it's really only worth £35k, now that would be painful, but okay if your business can afford it and offset against HMRC.

Come on Evo Rivals how can this be considered a direct comparison on track, everyday car against a track focus design car on special rubber and dry track. WTF. Why didn't they use a GTI Clubsport S.

If this is an old video resurrected , perhaps a better challenge would have been Seat Leon Cupra in 'Ring set up. More appropriate imo.

Does anyone have first hand experience coming from a Octavia VRS MK2 to a Golf R (without DCC) and can comment on the ride quality...sad question I know but must spare at least a moment to consider use with the family.

Had a quote for an outgoing mk7 Estate (£245 inc VAT, 8k, 9 months down, 3 years, fully maintained) but with no options.  A similar quote for 'mk7.5' with dcc is £100 more!

If its  on 18" STD Cádiz rims it rides fine, I had an Octavia vRS mk2 Special Edition hatch and an Octavia mk3Estate the R Estates comparable if not better imo.

I now have an R hatch on 19"Pretorias with DCC ride is fine in Comfort Mode.

I came from a VRS Octavia MK11 to a standard DSG Golf R mk7 on 18" wheels, with no DCC and found the ride was very good. In fact I haven't driven a DCC version to know the difference but TBH a non DCC Golf R is setup just right IMO. If you want to potter around its very comfy and has enough stiffness to hold when pressing on.

So now at last some form of performance package being considered by VW for Golf R but not a Mountune Equivalent

VW initial go a 3rd the way there with the limp wristed Oettinger body panel offered visual package, now this 2/3 rds the way package. When will we get offered the blue tablet version  (Viagra) Oettinger stage 1 added with a full VW Warranty.
