Removing skirts on a Felicia Fun

Featured Replies

Hi all Fun lovers,

We have recently bought a Felicia Fun with no mot but described as having no faults, ha! First thing we found was the state of the sills, holed and needing welding both sides.  Having become members of this community as so pleased to find other folk who love the quirkiness of their Fun, we've read everything we can regarding sills.  First and foremost, the skirts have to be removed before any welding can be done and they are stuck on with major superglue. Best advice was to 'cheese wire' them off, but not much hope of doing so without breaking.

So my husband Jim (he does the work, I do the typing!) set about with a guitar string, the air was blue for many hours (and I don't mean smoke) and after about 5 hours solid, he had hardly got anywhere, except pain in his shoulder and a very frayed temper.  Two cups of strong coffee later and off he goes in search of his trusty dremel. In less than an hour he had cut off both skirts and then was able to get a knife in between the skirt and the sill to remove the remaining part of the sill, taking about 10 minutes a side.

This may seem drastic (did to me at the time) but now he had both skirts off whole, albeit in two long pieces each.  More coffee, and then down the workshop to give them a good clean.  The dremel cut made matching up easy, and a bit of fibreglassing from the inside joined them back neatly.  With a little bit of filler on the outside and rubbed back ready for paint.  Now they are primed, you can't seen the join.
The words, if only had used the dremel in the first place, would have saved hours and hours of cussing and blinding.  So thought we would pass on this info to others, and save them the time and headaches due to the stupid glue.

Still waiting to get the car back from the welder, so watch this space for more progress reports. If I had a clue how to upload photos on this site, I could show the steps taken!

Very entertaining and refreshing your writing style, Jim's wife. We, men, are better with wrenches. The pen is for the ladies.

Oh yeah, that is an old problem. The forum should have a PINNED topic about that in every section and sub-section. Till then, less than 2% of the topics have photos attached or linked externally :|
