Earlier than expected

Featured Replies

We ordered a VRS in November and it was due to be ready the last week in Feb, the dealer has phoned and said it is ready for Saturday and putting a bit of pressure to collect on Saturday. However we wanted it for March so its the new reg.

Obviously it will be a 65 reg but we wanted a 16 reg, i don't think the dealer is prepared to hold the car for a month as its an expensive car that cannot be sold or driven.

Everyone i have spoken to has said wait for a month for the new reg and they have based this on the belief that it will depreciate quicker, is this true????????? I thought the date of first registration is the important bit, but most will only look at the number plate.

I don't think i would wait until the 25th January to open my Christmas Presents

What would you do????

A 1st March 16 (16 plate) registered car will be worth more than a virtually identical February 28th (or January in your case) 65 plate - price guides won't care is it's only one day older.  If it's on hire/lease/PCP it won't make a bat of difference.  If it's your own cash, then if you're keeping it for less than 10 years, stick to your guns although I think there's a clause that unless a delivery date was previously agreed, you MUST take delivery within a certain period of it arriving at the dealership (either 14 or 21 days I think).

When we bought SWMBO's Citigo, it was on the premise that although they expected delivery early Feb 15, we wouldn't take delivery until 1st March and this was agreed before we signed the paperwork.

I would hold out for March, dealer wants to meet targets. Having said that it won't make a huge difference on residuals and depreciation. If it was me I think I would make a bit of a fuss, umm and arr for a while and then use it as leverage, perhaps a spare wheel or load liner to sweeten the deal?

Dealer said they would keep it until the 1st March, they were very good and I didn't have to moan and groan, it cost me a crate of beer but that's not a problem. Happy Face

As long as you're happy that's what matters. Hope they are going to throw in a nice bunch of flowers for the missus!

You're a more patient man (woman) than me, if I knew the car was there I'd want it lol. One thing I do like to do as soon as I can is get my hands on the owners manual and a have a good trawl through it, you have plenty of time to do that now if you wanted.

Will the value really be a lot more now we have 2 plate changes a year?

What's important is its a 2016 reg, not if its a 65 reg or a 16 reg.

Not sure I'd be able to wait for it and it will be kept in store in the dealers compound for another 5 weeks.

I'd ask them to make it worth your while e.g more discount or free accessories, if they do take it this month.

My car has arrived early too, the dealers were happy to keep mine until March 1st as originally agreed. But as I am putting a private plate on the car and the difference in trade in values in 3 years time will not be very different. I am picking the car up next Tuesday - so will be a February registered 65 plate (officially).

If I had not been using a private plate I would have waited until March, just to be a '16' snob. But as Glosrich mentions above - not much difference in trade in values now due to two plate changes per year, dealers look more at the year, model and mileage of trade-ins

Your lucky, ordered mine in November to - I've had an email to say its left the factory (on the 21/1) but nothing yet.

I will take mine up until around the half way point this month, after that I'll wait.

Don't think the reg is so important now for resale value, they will look at the year. Mines have a personalised plate on it straight away so I doesn't matter visually to me.

Getting impatient :-)

Whichever way you look at it a 16 plate will be worth more than a 65 plate…granted not a lot but it will be worth more.

For the Op, depreciation is still depreciation. You'll be leaving your new car out in the elements when you could be driving it. Take my word for it, it will lose approx 30% at least within 12 months.

Let me see if I get this right.

If you have two cars, manufactered the same day, same milage but different registration (16 and 65), one will be worth more than the other?!

A newer plate would be more desirable to a buyer i would of thought..

I would just wait if it a private purchase.

Cars should have the build date on a plate under the bonnet like the BMW E60 did.

You won't have them manufactured on the same day. If i was buying a used car and saw 2 identical ones, one with a 16 plate one with 65 plate i would buy the newer plate unless the 65 was cheaper.

I really shouldnt worry too much TBH. Six months later (really a matter of weeks) it'll be an old plate anyway and it'll make little or no difference to its residuals.

Personally Id rather take the car early and ensure it doesnt pick up any knocks/bangs/scratches in the showroom or compound as thats arguably worse.

Just collect it and start using and enjoying straight away. Why wait and allow it to be 'stored' then given a loving wash by the skoda masterwash techs with a dirty bucket of washing up liquid and a rotten sponge.

Best thing you can do is to get it off skoda.
