Help, Transport block

Featured Replies

I purchased a new skoda a month and have been experiencing the odd bang and crash when driving on seemingly smooth roads. The sort of thing i mean is small potholes gaps in sections of tarmac etc. Having read this forum i decided to check if my car had transport blocks still in, and to my surprise there was still one left in.

Does any one know if this could have caused any damage to the suspension, i can think of 2 instances where it has banged really loudly. Also the tyre presures were 40psi and over?.

any advice would be much appreciated on how to deal with this.

I'd call the dealer and get them to come pick it up, leave you a replacement car and sort it out. I dont think it will have caused damage although its possible you could have top mount damage,,,,,, I dont think it locks the entire spring travel?

Sounds like another top notch PDI

Just wondering how you checked for the block?

I initially shoved my hands in with the wheel arch on the ground but could not lift the damper gaiter up, not enough room. I then prodded the gaiter and it felt like a hard disk. In the end i had to jack the car up to give me enough room to lift the rubber gaiter up high enough to pull the disk out.

For 20 years i have been messing around with old knackers of cars, so i thought i would buy something decent, now evidently i am turned into a paranoid wreck.

I am absolutely furious about this and worried any subsequent premature failure of any part i will have to foot the bill. This is totally unacceptable for something so trivial, removing blocks and Tyre pressures FFS.

I mean how do you know how damaged something is with out replacing it.

I had the transport blocks left on the nearside front shock absorber of mine. I suffered about 2-3 fairly big bangs.

Don't think there was any damage as the tracking wasn't affected (I had it checked after). The only damage was to the dust shield over the piston rod which I had replaced free at the dealer.

To see if they haven't been removed, you need to jack the relevant corner up of the car and push the dust shield up. They'll be very obvious as they are brightly coloured. They don't take up the whole movement of the spring, just a fair proportion of it!

Also, I made Skoda put a note on my cars history so that if the shock absorber failed early then it would be noted.

But the warranty on suspension is only 6 months as they are wear and tear items apparently.

Not seen one of these threads for a while, so generally PDIs seem to have improved a bit. It's always been said in the past that they shouldn't cause any damage, but I have no first hand knowledge.

Yeah I don't blame you one bit. I presume you don't need to take the wheel off once it's jacked up so that makes it even more annoying that it wouldn't have been found in PDI

Hard to believe that the mk3 has been out for so long and this is still happening. Wonder if Skoda UK or even Skoda know these are getting missed.

Shocking that this was missed, what about those tyre pressures as well! I would be getting the suspension inspected by the dealers master technician and get them to do the entire PDI process again to ensure nothing else was missed.

yeh the Tyre pressures were a real curve ball, i usually check them regularly on my old cars I had to as they lost air , however I assumed as the car came from a dealer it would have been done. so i have been driving around for a month assuming quite wrongly they were correct, I mean how could a Skoda dealer get something like that wrong.

I might as well have done the PDI myself.

Seems like we are back to the PDI being a simple tick sheet exercise

Don't know if it still happens but at one time I think Skoda used to put a A4 size label hanging from the Interior  Mirror which said " TRANSPORT BLOCKS "

Perhaps Skoda should do " Simply Clever Reading Lessons "

An A4 size label? Audi need to get over themselves.

Are these blocks put in to raise the ride height for getting on the transporter or for restricting movement in transit?

Id be blazing, its simple stuff and shoild be very well documented in the PDI instructions.

They are there to restrict the movement. They don't affect the ride height :)

I am going to see what the dealer suggest on Monday. unfortunately the dealer is in the other part of the country so i hope there is some reciprocal arraignment to dealers up here. If unsuccessful i will have to pursue it with skoda UK

At the very least i want the car checked out, tracking and suspension components checked.

does any one know the best way of contacting skoda uk, e-mail phone ?

Phone is best

This issue isn't specific to the MkIII, it affects all models, has been happening for years and is generally a reflection on the competence of the guy doing the PDI and/or the dealer.

When I accepted my new Mk 3 in October 2015 I specifically asked if the tyre pressures had been checked - on all the new cars I have ever had they were at delivery pressures. I was told they certainly had been checked. I shall be out with a pressure gauge tomorrow ...

Trouble is, you've removed the block and presumably corrected the tyre pressures. How to prove there was a problem with the PDI?

Photos and the blocks, why would a costumer have the blocks, do you think you can buy them for coffee coasters from there accessory catalogue, also why the he'll would I go through all of this with a car I have just paid 20 grand for.

I believe it only affects Model's with the Sport Suspension.  It happened to the Wife's then Fabia MKII Blueline  ( which had the sport Suspension )  I was checking the tyre pressures about a week after we got it and noticed the Blocks. I jumped in and took it back to the dealers, collard the salesman and told him about the Blocks.

He started to straighten his tyre and replied " The Blueline doesn't have them fitted to which I said "  This F33ker does "

Later on that week I spotted another Blueline parked in a Supermarket  Carpark supplied by the same dealer, had a quick look and yep that had the blocks in to.  Left a note on the Windscreen and went on my way.
