Highway Code Quiz - How much do you know!?

Featured Replies

I think the question for braking distance is wrong...

When travelling at 60 mph in dry conditions, how much further would it take you to stop with bald tyres (less than 1.6 mm tread) compared to new tyres?

I don't believe it should make much difference in dry conditions, it's wet where you'll have an issue.

This page suggests that they should stop you slightly quicker when bald in the dry: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?&ttid=91

I got 9 out of 10, got the braking distance on bald tyres wrong.

Ditto.

Gaz

10/10, but I think the question about bald tyres doesn't have a correct answer, since they don't specify where the substrate compound starts or the temperature. It's probably correct for Continentals, since they start the substrate at 3mm depth, but Toyo actually make the entire tread depth out of the wearing compound, so in the dry you should always get pretty much the same stopping distance as long as you can get some heat into them, which is pretty much any time the road surface is above 0C.

I only got 7, but... tbf - we have different alchohol limits, and that car and bike sign doesnt exist over here. Also the cold/flu one... put that down to currently having one :D

I got 8/10..bald tyres one and dual carriageways lined with street lights...

9/10. Bald tyres got me

I got the tyres???

9/10  Got the flu/cold one wrong.

AAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaCCCHHHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuu

10/10. Comes of regularly consulting the Highway Code whilst working for www.iam.org.uk probably...

Stupid friggin test is wrong. It first asked me where I am from so I say Northern Ireland and then I get 9/10 because it ignored that and the fact that it's 4 years before first MOT is required for a new car/motorbike in NI not 3 years like GB...... Guessed the bald tyres stab in the dark one at 10X :D

9/10 got drink driving question wrong, thought it was 50

I got 8/10..bald tyres one and dual carriageways lined with street lights...

this.

The information there doesn't help answer the question on braking distances...

The question it asked me was, "When travelling at 60 mph in dry conditions, how much further would it take you to stop with bald tyres (less than 1.6 mm tread) compared to new tyres?" with choices of 5, 6 or 10 additional car lengths.

I'm happy that in wet conditions it could add 10 car lengths to the stopping distance but surely not in the dry.

Genuinely curious, to me the question is wrong for the expected answer, any extra info you can provide given your IAM links would be great! Thanks :)

I'll be honest and say that I got 6/10!

I got 8 / 10

Got the oil measurement wrong as mine has to be done when engine hot/warm and the question isn't geared for this. Although this is mentioned in the answer but a bit late by then.

All so got alcohol one wrong, levels different in Scotland and I'm not bothered about the limits as I don't drink/drive or risk early morning driving if I've been out night before.

I'll ask around for some input.

One thing I had noticed that they've potentially got wrong too and has been commented on -

'No motor vehicles' doesn't automatically mean 'pedestrian-only zone'!

I didn't notice that, but I'd agree that the "NMV sign" does not mean "pedestrian only zone", "footpath" or anything similar.

8/10 - got the coolant warning light wrong  .

8/10.

No idea what the legal blood alcohol limit is, it's zero in my mind.

That's the other one I got wrong - I think because 50mg is now the limit in Scotchland.
