Windows 10 - worth it yet?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone was still hesitant to go to Win 10. Is it worth it?

I am on a couple of main points:

  1. Upgrade process from win 8.1 - is it simple now or likely to hang up ?
  2. Software - is software that is working under win 8.1 likely to work ok? Have got Photoshop CS4 Extended running on the PC atm and don't want to lose it (would have to go to subscription now if i lose CS4 which I have no interest in).

Any one shed any light?

I installed Win 10 on an older i7 Laptop that had Win7 on it and I hate it! It runs smoothly enough, but I hate the gimmickieness (not a real word) of it. I like the plain and logical layout of Win7 (

You have only got till 29th July to get Windows 10 for free.

I had the previous version on my laptop (windows 8?) which I hated after using 7 on the home pc for so long so upgraded both for free. I don't use edge as it doesn't let me post things on sites for some reason (the replacement for explorer) so use chrome instead but other than that it's been fine. Not all the bookmarks came across so it would be good practice to copy these all to a word doc or email and make sure you know all your passwords if you rely on cookies to do that for you before you pressed the button. Make sure you've got a good internet connection too as IIRC it's a huge file to download and it takes quite a time to complete.

Nothing wrong with Win10 at all. Lovely operating system, a worthy upgrade from Win7 that's for sure.

Switched all mine across on recentish kit and worked fine. (3 PCs, 2 tablets) - (other 2 laptops still on win 7 as no win 10 GFX drivers - but one is ancient (Celeron M 1.5!) and the other is a nettop)

MIL laptop has "reverse brightness syndrome" that I can't seem to fix (apart from setting the brightness to 50%) since switching. (There seems to be a general problem that Win 10 likes to install the latest gFX update even if you have a specific OEM driver from the laptop manufacturer and this causes problems!)

Great, only another three and a half months of microsoft pop ups and badgering to endure then.

If I download it now, but do not upgrade, am I correct in thinking it will be on my hard drive ready to use, but I will still be using windows 7 until I upgrade?

Will my files etc be very easy to find (similar to win 7?). I'm not particularly computer literate, still learning but managed to do a few things recently, such as scanning into Adobe acrobat to fill in my invoices and email them. Probably a simple job for some / most.

I do not want to complicate this as it took me ages to suss how to do it. Took me ages to realise you could get acrobat reader for free, or even what I needed to do this.

And just learning how to save (save as) stuff properly, although only particularly familiar with PDFiles. I do not know what most of the other stuff is.

Just started using 'word starter' instead of 'wordpad'. Only had wordpad on my last laptop.

just on a similar subject - any recommendations on where to get a copy of Win 7 from these days with a key?  Found plenty of 'refurb' Dell versions but want one without the Dell specific drivers if poss as the machine I'm trying to upgrade is an old one built to a spec from a few years back (although it's still working fine... b  (Intel® Core 2 Duo E4500; Asrock Conroe1333-D667; 2.0GB Kingston DDR2 667mhz).

I believe Microsoft have now made Windows 10 a recommended update, so if your computer is set to download and install updates and your not there to decline the upgrade you might find Windows 10 installed on your computer if you leave it on.

Easier to do a clean install now. You can put Win10 on a fresh disk and it will (allegedly) take your Win7 key without having to faff around putting on 7 THEN upgrading to 10.

It's fast and clean and I've found it very stable.

I've got a lot of the Cortana crap disabled.

Great, only another three and a half months of microsoft pop ups and badgering to endure then.

On Win 7 click 'Start' then 'Control Panel' then 'System and Security'. Then click 'View Installed Updates'. In the search area type KB3035583 When this appears right click on it and then click 'Uninstall Update'. Win 10 shizzle gone.

No you won't. (at least not in my experience) It always asks if you want to upgrade. AFAIK it's not forced upon anyone.

It aint Win 7 by any stretch. I ditched 10 and reverted to 7 after fifteen minutes. IMHO 10 is trying to be a tablet/ phone/ PC OS and in the end it's just a POS lol

Yes it is worth it

The Dell disks are the FULL Win7 install, with all the drivers; you just get Dell branding in a few places like the System page in the Control Panel. I have installed a few of these DELL disks on totally non-Dell systems without any issues.

If you are worried about the age of the machine, download the drivers to a USB drive; if Win7 hasnt got the correct driver, it is usually quite good at selecting a generic driver to get a device working until you can install a specific driver.

Win7 at work, Win 10 on my home desktop (but at home I'm normally running Linux).

Personally I prefer Win7 and I appreciate that the IT guys at work take it easy before upgrading to the latest versions. For me, Win10 doesn't offer any improvements. Instead, some useful tools are gone (WIndows Media Center for instance), and the most irritating bit is that Win10 makes updates more or less compulsory. If you run the Pro version they can be postponed but ewith the Home version they will just happen. And if you're unlucky, you'll have various drivers updated that could cause trouble.

Still, the "free upgrade" offer is tempting (and what made me take the plunge at home). I'm not sure, but isn't it possible to just download the upgrade but postpone installing till later (even later than July)?

Just delete the +OEM+ folder and it won't install all the dell stuff.

Remember once you've upgraded to Windows10 you key will be upgraded to Win10 so after that when you install/re-install the hardware is tied to the OS so a key wont be needed.

Loads of places, Reddit Microsoft section, Play-Asia etc.. Can pick up Win7 Pro and then you get the free upgrade to 10.

You like the upgrade that much then, :D .

Unlike win 8.1 you can switch off a lot of "features" and make it more like windows 7.

Cortana search bar, annoying tray icons etc.

It's easy to do

I might just hang on for 11; Microsoft seem to do better on odd numbered OS'. It's a bit like Star Trek films lol

I like the plain and logical layout of Win7 (well, logical-ish). I don't want a touch screen and I can use a mouse, so I hate the tiles thing. I also hate the apps thing too and even though I run it in desktop mode to try and simulate Win7 to a degree, it takes more clicks to do the same things as Win7. I will not be installing it on my other machines and will remain on Win7 as long as possible.

Thanks for the feedback and info gents.  I now have a W7 disk on the way courtesy of a Briskodian - thanks! so will crack on as and when I get the chance.

Cheers for the info.

Might go for it - I currently use Classic shell for on Win 8.1 so don't have to put up with the tiles etc but it sounds like that can be configured in Win 10.

Gave it a far chance then.

Edge is cut down browser aimed at speed. Internet Explorer is still there and can be made default if you prefer that to Chrome.

I've been using Windows 10 for quite a few months without a single crash. This has been on two Macbooks, a couple of desktops and a Lenovo laptop. All have been great to use and only problems I've had is the trackpad on the Macbooks is too sensitive in Windows 10 and I've had to use Norton Ghost in comparability mode for the one time I've needed to use it.
