Everything I've read has debunked this

It has been covered in plenty of depth by the Tech media websites and forums.

I installed Win 10 on an older i7 Laptop that had Win7 on it and I hate it! It runs smoothly enough, but I hate the gimmickieness (not a real word) of it. I like the plain and logical layout of Win7 (

  • MS is just joining the club with Apple, Google and everyone that make apps. It staggers me that people only seem to bother when it's Microsoft that does it.

EVERYTHING in Windows 10 is more difficult than it used to be, or needed to be.

For example, Windows 10 Mail. You used to be able to right click on an email and simply add contact to address book. They've now put contacts, sorry, People into a different program. I tried to add a contact, but it replied "Sorry we don't have a contact for that". I did eventually work out how to do it, but by no means an I an IT newbie. I've been working in IT and programming for over 20 years but I struggled and got frustrated for quite a while trying to work it out.

I bloody hate Windows 10.

As Lee posted above, all can be disabled.

Yes, currently it can be disabled; but how many non techs even know about it, or can find out how to stop the slurp.

Then there is the fact that M$ have started issuing some of these data slurping programs under different patch numbers, so you can delete it today, and M$ will sneak it back on next week. Add compulsory patching, and it is an ongoing fight to keep control of your own PC and data - no thanks, they can EFF OFF.

It'll used to use Outlook, but I didn't like it so I use Thunderbird as my email client. I find it a bit easier to use.

Not saying that I won't go back to Outlook in the future though.

I don't use a webmail client other than the browser now. I can get mail anywhere in the same digestible format.

For anyone so concerned over privacy, then jump on an encrypted linux distro and leave windows/apple behind. Install all the net filter tools (wireshark) etc to see whats actually going on. Or, go out to the pub and turn your computer off for the next super secret meeting...

looks like another tool to aid NHS privatisation :bandit:

I don't know the detail but from what I've read I'm not sure that's legal.

They've got you by the shorts when it comes to data capture of health complaints.

However, for all other things that are a matter of choice and discretion, you can have great fun messing with the extrapolations that the purchase predictor software make by simply being inconsistent in the  purchases you make i.e. so that the search pattern diverges rather than converges - discovered by pure accident and force of circumstance. The contents of my regular daily 00:45 "Have you considered this" E-Mail I get from the SAC is now as funny as ****. Hopefully, that makes the data, worthless for sell on purposes.

Been doing this for years - by buying for myself and elderly friends AND work, all through the same account - and using one time email address's. I also put weird stuff in my "Basket" but never buy it - just to drive the Amazon AI crazy.

bit pointless and a waste of your own time isn't it? Do you really think the Amazon AI 0s and 1s give a rats?

Not a bad idea, but my main email is with TalkTalk who surely have the WORST webmail client that it's possible to write.

But think of the fun if you can get a "people who bought this also bought" linked with

"The Princess Diana Memorial Colonic Irrigation Kit".

Orange's is not that good either  - it hasn't changed as long as I've had BB (~1999).

I've been thinking about using a third party mail solutions (hosted) but most of them charge ( price for having no adverts perhaps)  - when compare to Outlook.com /  gmail etc. Mailbox £5 a year + alias at £0.75  a month.

Well I did the install last night - so far all the programs I have checked work and it seems slightly quicker.

I have disabled all the privacy settings so not too much getting sent to MS I hope.

M$ auto updater strikes again; my son went in to work yesterday and they found all of the company PCs had installed Win10 overnight. No one will admit to clicking a "Yes" button, and EVERY PC on the LAN has been overwritten.

I think that is why our work PC's are all locked down with regards to updates - can only be done by IT.

Assuming that IT set everything up properly, this will have had to have been rolled out from the company server - so it's someone with access to that.

Its a small engineering firm, I dont know who runs the IT. Luckily, the Win10 install doesnt appear to have buggered up the CNC machinery software systems they use the PCs to program (yet).

My personal experience with Windows 10 has been fairly good. I use it on my gaming PC and my work laptop.

I work for an EPOS company for small retailers, therefore they typically don't have an IT management company dealing with things. As GentleGiant mentioned, Windows 10 has been busy upgrading a lot of people this week. I believe the staff haven't purposely upgraded to Windows 10. We've found that it is scheduling updates for users, and they have to go to a bit of effort to not upgrade.

Whilst our software runs on Windows 10 fine, the upgrade process does cause a few issues. They're not major but raise support calls. The main one being if the upgrade through express settings, then it sets the region settings to English (United States) even if the PC was in UK mode. This causes our software to show US Dollars, instead of Pounds or Euros. This would also show on receipts.

We've also noticed that a number of services that are set to automatic for start up, just don't start up at all. Setting them to Start Up delayed seems to do the trick.

Otherwise it's various permissions issues in the registry, that were present in Windows 8 as well. Also some older hardware not being compatible. Mostly USB to COM adaptors for older receipt printers.

So this week has been busy with calls. typically getting 15 calls a day for Windows 10 upgrades alone, on top of our normal workload. They're not tough calls, just time consuming and fairly urgent from a customer point of view. We should be a team of 4 in support, but we're down to 2 with a 3rd training up. We had someone leave the other week before this all kicked off.

If anyone is looking for a tech support job, then let me know. It will make our lives a easier.

Anyway, don't let this put anyone off from upgrading to Windows 10, just be aware that it may cause a few problems with various software installed.

My Linx tablet updated to Windows 10 on Saturday - much better experience than when I forced the upgrade through Windows Insider Programme.

On the previous installation, it lost it's "tablet" functionality and the screen wouldn't rotate.

All sorted this time now, and it works fine.

***** WARNING******

The tech sites are reporting that the latest set of Win10 nagware has NO WAY OUT!!

You cant say no, or delay the install by more than a few days

STOP ALL AUTOMATIC UPDATES !!!!

Especially if you run a Samsung Laptop, as Win10 has no working drivers for your WiFi cards amongst other issues.

Finally managed to update both my computeres to win10....nice & flipping difficult due to win7 April updates sodding around & ballsing the win updater, & the fact that win doesn't like booting/creating new system from image via ACHI? SATA mode which slowed things down to 8hrs just for 80GB of reimage. Pulled the plug on that & did it via USB from the external drive & 40mins!

Win 10 way faster, so long as you uninstall most of the stupid aps running in the background, set the privacy settings to sod off.....& Groove music can't read embedded album art in FLAC...aarrggghhhh

& System Image creation etc is marked as Windows 7 as they haven't bothered to update it!....

M$ half baked again.....at least updates until 2025...

I found Win10 wouldn't even play WMA files.

MS making products that don't even support their own file types.

I suspect Satya Nadella is actually a Google mole.

He's effectively destroyed the mobile phone division and now he's moving onto the desktop.
