Petrol in a 1.6 diesel

Featured Replies

Filled my nearly empty 2012 Octavia 1.6 diesel with petrol. Ran until it stopped. Drained completely from under the back seat and changed and filled the fuel filter. The car soon started and drove 4 miles home. From cold the car will run with full power until warm when anything over 2500rpm of sometimes on over run (eg. a roundabout} bring on LIMP MODE. On a clear road, if I turn off ignition and restart, it returns to normal. Do not trust a main agent to just keep putting new bits on.

any fault codes?

Limp mode can be brought up on a number of things.

I would do a fault code scan first, it may just be a coincidence............or you may have just ruined the HPFP

HPFP = High Pressure Fuel Pump for the uninitiated.... (at least I think that is what it means!)

Have a look at this.

Driving until it stopped is never very good, as the diesel lubricates a lot of the fuel system. Prepare for potential big bills.

Shouldnt have driven it until it stopped. Soon as you realised should have really stopped. Id expect a few bills!

Petrol in a 1.6 diesel. UPDATE. Thank you for your comments. I was put off visiting a main dealer. Most comments said they would just keep fitting new parts. After much research and phone calls. I drove the car (had done 600miles out of town ) to Ribble Valley Diesels, Ribchester, Lancashire. They had explained that the problem was most likely to be the injectors. More importantly, they had the proper equipment and would test the parts. This appears to be the case, after testing, reconditioning and rebuilding the cost was £900 inc. vat. I was very impressed with their service and consider the bill reasonable for a proper job done.

Glad you got it sorted and are happy with the result. Expensive mistake though!

Well, if it ended with £900 and if all other stuff is OK then you can consider yourself lucky. Many end this kind of thing with higher expenses.

Petrol in a 1.6 diesel. UPDATE. Another 1000 miles covered with no problems. I do consider myself lucky to have found a decent Diesel Specialist (Ribble Valley Diesels]. An expensive mistake? Yes, but only like having a bump. Even insured you soon loose a grand. I am still convinced a main agent would still be fitting new parts at great expense. I still enjoy the car and hope to keep it for years.

If the petrol damaged the injectors just think how much wear it could have caused to the HPFP. I hope i'm wrong though and you get many more years service out of it.
