Bolero and Washed Android Phone - HELP!

Featured Replies

I know it was stupid but I have machine washed, rinsed and spun my Android phone, needless to say it now doesn't work. Trying the usual drying out techniques but I am not hopeful of success. Also, I haven't backed up the contents of the phone, yes I know I should have but sadly I haven't.

I only really need my contacts and I wondered if there is any way I could get these off my Bolero radio which synced with the now defunct phone? If I switch on the Bolero and go to the Phone function it just tells me that "no phone is connected". Does anyone know if there is anyway to download the contacts from the Bolero to a new phone, or be able to read the contacts so I could manually enter them into my new phone?

My 'guess' is that it's simply 'mirroring' your phone .........hope I'm wrong though.

Err, if it's an android phone, aren't the phone numbers going to be stored in "contacts" in your Google mail account?

Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk

It must store something because when connecting it's instant as opposed to the short wait when downloading the phone book for the first time.

The SIM should be OK, put that in the new phone also name the phone the same as the washed one and it may see the saved contacts.

If you've signed into a Google account when setting up your phone, all of your contacts will be stored on your Google account.

If you get another Android device, simply sign in and they'll all appear.

But I don't have a Google account. Privacy and all that!

If you don't have a Google account how are you getting apps from the app store or updates for apps already on the phone.

Unlikely contacts will be on the SIM unless you specifically told the phone to save them there.

I use Google for contacts calandar etc syncing across all devices and never had an issue with security, choose a strong password change regularly and sign up for Google second level verifycation.

You could try syncing a new phone to the car and see if it will sync the contacts back to it from the car.

The contacts are very unlikely to be on the SIM but if the car thinks it's connecting to the same phone it may show the numbers that are saved on the car related to that phone.

At least you didn't iron it as well!

Sorry, I'm not being helpful am I?

Not much help but I immersed my phone.

Remembering the old advice I had, should

a camera drop into the sea, first remove

the battery rinse camera in fresh water then

open up as much as possible and dry.

I actually had to do this with a phone instead

of a camera removing simm and battery I put

it all to dry alongside the chimney flue in my

caravan. It all worked although the colour screen

was not happy until I redried it.

Don't  rockpool with your phone in your top pocket!

No experience with android but some with daughter's iPhone. Your first step is to dry it put it in a snap seal freezer bag _or a well tied ordinary one with a generous amount of uncooked rice (Basmati works well)  seal it and put in a warm place airing cupboard or above a radiator. If you can remove the battery  it would be good. Leave it 24 hours or longer then recharge it-immersion will almost certainly have discharged it. In the case of a soggy iPhone it came back to life to our joy. IPhone batteries are'nt removable. The next step is to take it to a competent phone repairer who can see if a new battery will make it go. Don't take it to a phone shop who will undoubtedly try to sell you a new one. A good repairer may be able to recover data even if they can't revive the handset.

In the past I put an old Nokia 1100 through the washing machine full cycle (twice) and it still works - it lives in a drawer in my desk as backup of last resort and I've just switched it on now and it shows 50% charge! Can't remember when I last charged it but must be months ago. Of course it only makes and receives calls and you have to text on a tiny black and white screen but "they don't make them like that any more".

If you have to buy a new phone the Motorola G is waterproof for a few minutes up to a depth of 18" or so and seems to get good reviews so might be worth a look. (I only know it's waterproof because I bought one a couple of days ago and so far it seems decent value for money - bit like the Yeti really).

Do Android phones not back-up their content in a similar vein as the iPhone does each night to the cloud. If ever I upgrade my phone the new one just syncs all the contacts, SMSs, images, apps, etc..... back from the cloud so it's as though the phone has never been replaced etc...

Yes they do if you sign in to your Google account.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. Unfortunately the phone is dead - not a peep after careful drying and attempt to recharge the battery. So bought a new Motorola 3G (thanks Paul52) to replace my dead MotoG. Went through the set up of the new phone and lo and behold it asked me if I wanted to import Contact from XT******, no idea what that is, but I said "Yes" and magically all my contacts appeared. Seem to have lost Text Messages but no big deal. New phone says it is water resistant to brief immersion - doubt it would survive machine washing though and certainly not ironing - Chriskoda,  no you were not being helpful!!

Anyway up and running and because new phone has a 32 Meg micro SD card I have downloaded all my music to the phone so I can play it in the Yeti direct from the phone. I have never got an SD card loaded with music direct from iTunes to work cleanly in the Bolero radio. I think it is because my computer is an Apple iMac so you get lots of miscellaneous 'greyed' files visible when you load the SD card into the Bolero and attempt to play music. It is possible to use but only after you keep skipping the greyed files.

Paired the phone with the Yeti with no problems and synced the Phone contacts. Only problem I have now is trying to work out how to delete the old dead phone, if I try and delete the old phone I keep getting a message asking me to pair the old phone! Well as the old phone doesn't work anymore I can't do that so trying to work out how to delete a kaput phone now?

I have now made sure everything is backed up!

Suspect 'greyed out files' may be an apple format that bolero doesn't support (apple lossless ?).

I must have well north of 8k tracks on a 64GB micro SD card in my Xperia Z2 ........mind boggles........no album covers, but what would you expect from a 'card' barely half the size of your little finger nail.

More/as likely to be the "dot" files that OSX uses to hold metadata about the actual files, and which get created on the SD Card as part of the copying process.  They don't normally show up on the Mac because files with a filename beginning with a full stop are normally hidden under OSX.  There are ways to get rid of them - I think there are threads on Briskoda about it.  I can't remember how to do it myself offhand, other than via a terminal session.

Yes, you are right they are files "hidden" on most radios if you use Windows to transfer music files but are visible if you use iTunes music copied from a Mac. I used to use a friends PC to delete the greyed files but too much hassle. There are ways to delete the greyed files on a Mac but again a hassle. So I use my phone.

Those contacts will either have been retrieved from your Google account (which you say you don't have) or possibly from the Motorola equivalent.  Either way, they're stored "in the cloud".

You shouldn't have to pair a phone to delete it - as you say, that would mean that if you don't have the phone for any reason then you can't delete it.  Are you trying to do this from the Bluetooth menu within the Phone function on the Maxidot?

Trick is to pair the new phone before deleting the old phone. Maxidot would not allow me to delete the old phone until I had paired the new phone and it was "connected" to the Bolero, only then can you delete other phones.

Sorry, I thought you said you had paired the new phone.  If you were trying to delete the old phone first then yes, it won't work.

" it asked me if I wanted to import Contact from XT******, no idea what that is"

XT followed by 3 or 4 numbers is a Motorola phone model number, eg Motorola MOTO G XT1068

Thanks, would that have come from a Google account I might have set up when I got my first Moto G? If so could I get any other info from the backup? I remember when I was setting up my new phone, and after I had loaded the contacts from XT*** it then asked me if I wanted to load other data immediately or later, being in a hurry I clicked on later. Problem is I can't seem to get back to the page on which I clicked 'later' to now load the other info!

This may help.

With a bit of luck, they should all be there ..""
