ABF engine Skoda Fabia

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I can't find it on the internet, so i thought mabye you guys know the answer.

Is it possible to fit an ABF 2.0 16v engine from a SEAT Ibiza into a Skoda fabia mk1?

I thought there is some trouble with the engine mounts, but i am not sure.

thanks in advance

I think a member with the username sepulchrave has plans to do this. I must admit, I was wondering what the workaround would be for the totally different mounting arrangements.

I've been toying with the idea myself. The engine mount is the tricky bit. I have found online a MK4 Golf with a turbo'd ABF in it so there must be a way of doing it. ABF on throttle bodies would be lovely.

Second expansion tank has me scratching me noddle. :wonder:

For the charge cooler

I have the engine and the car, just need to marry them up, I've completely redone all the suspension and brakes on the 2.0 MPI, I'll be rebuilding the ABF in the next couple of months, it's done 135k so it's getting a full refresh and headwork first, looking at August for the transplant.

You make that sound trivial. :D

The advantage that I'll have is the complete 8 valve engine on a stand alongside the complete 16v engine making measurements and component swaps pretty straightforward. The only real aggro I'm expecting is the lack of cam sensor on the ABF since I want to keep the distributorless system from the 8 valve.

sepulchrave,

that sounds cool, i am very interesting.

I want to do an engine swap this year or next year. An ABF engine is one of the cheapest options for me. Do you have a topic of your progress?

okey, is it not easier to take an Ibiza and take everything out and put it in a fabia? of course the wiring is an other thing

Seen this?

I think you may be underestimating the engine mounting aggro, but I look forward to being proved wrong. :)

The only issue I can see is the lack of any engine mounting on the cambelt side of the block. The mounting is on the back of the ABF.

Low down.

Not yet, once I've torn the Fabias face off and ripped out the revolting 8 valve lump, I'll post details of progress, at the moment everything is vanilla and not worth documenting.

Absolutely not, I think all the 8v electronics can be adapted to run the ABF, Motronic is the gold standard and can be reflashed where Digi needs a new chip and the 8v has primitive emissions controls making it even easier.

I'm expecting to be able to fab adapters so the 8v mounts can be modified to fit, the cambelt run isn't so different, I'd be amazed if they changed the basic block casting, maybe some bosses will need drilling and tapping if they're blank.

Worst case scenario I'll reuse the 8v block to rebuild the ABF since it's going to get honed and re-ringed with all new shells anyway. The 8v motor will be scrapped, they're ten a penny.

Interesting, look forward to seeing that. Major block difference being the external water pump, cambelt run is similar as instead of the water pump you have the distributor/oil pump drive.

To be honest I haven't even bothered looking yet, the ABF is shrink wrapped on a pallet in shed 4 complete with all ancillaries including aircon pump, the only thing I know is missing is the distributor which the previous owner used to repair his track car.

The 8 valve car is in daily use since I've been ironing out the bugs but it'll come off the road in August to have the front end stripped off and the engine and box pulled out, it drives well enough but performance is so lacklustre with that crappy old engine.

Once the swap is accomplished and running I'll look to migrate to throttle bodies, I may decide to change the cams at the same time to push peak power to 7000 rpm, target is 200 BHP on ITB's.

If you are going to run ITBs that will need an aftermarket ECU then that sorts the distributor issue as you can run a coil pack.

I already have a piggyback ECU that will handle it all, just going to get it installed and working properly first, then I'll fettle the ITB system once it's a runner.

We ran a Dastek ECU on ours many moons ago, would be somewhat dated now but worked okish.

That's what I've got, a Unichip interceptor ECU, it handles all the signals I need it to and even has spare channels for turbo or nitrous systems, it'll certainly do enough to get the thing running.
