Brand of Fuel

Get a tuning box on it!

Working on that with SWMBO

If you have money to burn, please give it to me as I can make better use of it, rather you burn it.

Thanks.

In fairness, I filled my last car (a Focus CC diesel) with nothing but V-Power from day one and the guy who did the MOT on it when it was seven years old said that in 20+ years in the trade he'd never seen a diesel with such a low emissions reading.

Might have been due to the fuel, I'd hope so because it IS something you only use if you've money to burn.

Having said that, I love visiting the Shell Garage at Carland Cross on the A30.  Curiously, the regular pumps are more often than not "out of action" meaning you fill up with V Power or nothing.

Great business model

xdq  - I'm surprised at your mpg figures for a diesel. I'd have thought you should be getting more.

I've got 34.49mpg over 2,300 miles in my petrol DSG, and I don't hang about. A lot of pottering around too. Haven't done one of my 700 mile round trips from Cheshire to Kent yet either.

The 1.4 TSi DSG before it gave 41.52 over 15,000 with a best tank of 51.04mpg on one Kent trip.

It's lower than I was expecting - I had hoped for mid 40's on average - but I'm on 7k miles and it's getting better (might just be the summer fuel mix)

I'm going to try leaving the auto windscreen heating switched off as I suspect it's running the heater to keep the screen demisted rather than rely on the aircon which would be on anyway.

I just use what comes to hand.

I won't be screwed over by a garage, some really do try it on with their pricing especially Total, Esso & BP which in my book means bloody pricey!

I tend to use Sainsbury's or Shell the most as they're on my routes to work, but I do keep an eye on price.

What sort of petrol price fluctuation do you get in the UK over a given period?

Our metropolitan prices go through a weird 2 or 3 week cycle where the prices gradually fall by about 20% or 30%, and then at a indeterminate low price point (and time), they shoot back up to extortionate levels.

Obviously this results in a game of 'chicken' to hold off filling the tank until that very low price point which is sometimes held for a few days or just a few hours.

Strangely satisfying when you get it right and galling when you don't.

The companies and authorities say it is 'market forces' at work and that there is no evidence of collusion or price fixing, but as a well qualified cynic I have my doubts.

I think it's very similar here, they drop usually courtesy of a supermarket chain and stay lower for a while, then they slowly but surely sneak the price back up to where it was and beyond, then repeat it, but it never goes back to the lowest price point.

Odd that.

Hi Gerrycan, I've got rellies over in Perth, the price fluctuates between weekdays and weekends there. I've personally seen it do that up and down the west coast from Geraldton to Albany. Out in the bush, not so much!

Over here it's more of a gradual process, they shoot up when there's any crude oil panic but take ages to drop. (Of course the recent collapse in the price of crude saw wild variations.) Usually the supermarkets lead the way down, using it as a loss leader. This forces the standalone sites to follow. Most independent stations have closed over the past 20 years, used to be eight within two miles/3Km of me but now only one. Market dominated by Asda/Sainsbury/Morrisons/Tesco (depending who's nearby) supermarkets and Shell/BP. Used to be a lot of Texaco/Elf/Total stations but not now, certainly in my neck of the woods in Cheshire/Merseyside. Overwhelmingly Shell, no Esso and only one BP round here.

Supermarket high octane can be around 5 pence cheaper than Shell V Power. It's creeping up again, I just filled up VPower at £1.229 a litre - two weeks back it was £1.179. Back in March it was £1.109. Price differential between ordinary and high octane varies between seven and eleven pence.

Anyone find it different elsewhere in the UK - Tyneside, Midlands, Southeast?

Judging by those figures your short term cycle variation is about 10%, which seems reasonable compared to our circa 20%-30% as your prices obviously have a far higher tax component which does not fluctuate (much)

Currently Adelaide metropolitan prices for 91 Octane fuel varies from A$1.05 a litre to A$1.30, with 95 and 98 Octane usually 11 cents and 16 cents more respectively. There is only ever one diesel grade sold at any brand's station with pricing fluctuating from A$1.12 to A$1.19

So at current exchange rates our fuel costs roughly half yours per litre. Sorry about that :)

Same situation here with a lot of independent petrol stations being squeezed out by a few big operators.

Costco opened up here in Adelaide a couple of years back with one petrol station and their relatively low prices have been a constant thorn in the side of the big boys. Not local enough for me to use though and they really need more sites around the place to be effective.

I'm pretty pleased with the economy I get from my 1.4tsi driving at prevailing speed limits but not really accelerating hard to get to them.

Overall I average about 0.8L/100 worse than my old Mk2 1.9PD average.

Mostly Neste, sometimes ABC.

But always 98 (5% ethanol) rather than 95 (10% ethanol).

This decision is more based on the ethanol content rather than the octane level.

Same here in the North East although I think we seem to have cheaper prices than other parts of the country that I visit. See my previous post for diesel prices recently. A only one of them won't have been from up north.

Today's tank of Shell regular diesel was at 109.9 pence/litre.

The market forces argument always makes me laugh.

If the price of crude oil goes down we're told they bought the fuel months ago and that's why it takes time to drop in price. It's funny how the price increases immediately when crude goes up though.

Yep, I knew that! Been out there a dozen times in past 25 years, it's always been the case. Even now, with your cost of living and wages very roughly in line with us.

Back in '88 when I first went the AUD went much further on food, property, etc, there was a good cushion between income and expenditure, but it's narrowed a lot since, at least in WA. Except for petrol!

If talking about relative costs, I'll never forget in our earlier visits to USA getting each US gallons for 89 cents !

And at that time the exchange rate was nearly $2 to £1

(Of course, years before that it was even more striking)

Malaysia is our frequent destination. It's either 95 or 97 ron over there with the lower being around 34p/litre :D

Further to my post #32, I've just been on one of my frequent runs from Wirral to Sheffield and back (M56, M60, Glossop, Snake Pass, 150 miles round trip. Lovely drive when the roads are empty. Not today.).

Filled up with Shell V Power (Netherthorpe Road, Sheffield, I know there are some Steel City residents here) at £1.259 a litre. So in old money, that was £5.59 a gallon three days ago, now £5.72.

This time last year I paid a penny a litre less at the same garage in Sheffield.

Did the trip twice (Friday and now today) on that last tankful, and even with some really slow stuff round Glossop - for those who know it - and some motorway low flying, still got 35.5mpg overall. I'm happy with that.

But the vRS will be getting Sainsbury's best for the next few tanksfull.

(Footnote for Sheffielders - Gecko Junior's new flat is 2 minutes walk from the Kelham Tavern. Heaven.)

This must be one of the most contentious subjects, i use shell nitro diesel because of the alleged cleaning additives, my old car smoked less with it, so i have put it in this car from new
