How important is a main dealer FSH as a car gets older?

Featured Replies

Hi

Any thoughts as to how important a FSH from a Skoda main dealer is as a car gets older?

I'm assuming that independents will still stamp the service book - or am I wrong?

Cheers - Stuart

If you ever need a goodwill contribution from Skoda for work on the car it's very important - if not essential.

Interesting. What sort of problems would one be likely to receive a goodwill contribution for? I've been told that my rear subframe and anti-roll bar are developing corrosion. The job is so expensive, they've only dared to give me a price for the parts so far (£494.60).

but on a nine? year old car goodwill will be zero unless you're looking at a dealer trade in

i would say it's important on any car that has decent value, i tend to sway to the "not bothered" thoughts when coming to 1k value cars.

Hell I stamp the book and I'm not even a registered business.

As a car gets older I'd say it becomes less important.

For me, I still service mine with a main dealer even though it's 6 years old and over 70k. No independents near me were noticeably cheaper than a dealer service, so I'd rather have the dealer stamp. Also my dealer let me take my own oil and did the service for £75. At this price I didn't even bother asking the independents if they could beat it.

My car is 7 years old almost and I've not taken it once to skoda. I never trust main dealers, so always prefer to take my cars to local, reputable specialists. My car has only 2 skoda stamps, if that.

My car is just under 5 years old and I will continue to save money and keep taking it to my local independent who I trust completely. They have all the VAG equipment necessary to service or fix my car. My previous Mazda did not see a Mazda garage when I owned it. Same as my Honda before that and the Honda before that as well etc. Always sell my cars privately and never had a problem getting a sale. If you keep your vehicle in good condition with receipts for all work done over the years of ownership, buyers will always want it. As for goodwill from Skoda even if serviced by Skoda, some hope once it's out of official warranty. The same as other vehicle manufactures I am afraid.

I have never used a main dealer for my Octavia, always use a trusted independant who ive used for the past 13 years.

I do how ever have a spreadsheet on my pc with all the work which gets done to the car on it along with mileage and cost.

I did it for my last car too and when I sold it all the people who looked at the car all said having the work printed like that was very useful.

My car that I bought in April is 5 years old - has had 6 services all done by Skoda. I'll probably get it done once by Skoda as its under the Skoda warranty and I can afford the extra few quid for the main dealer to look at it. Once the warranty is done then it'll be going to my independent who are experts. Of course my only concern is the chain tensioner - so I may be tempted to take it straight to the independent and get them to change to chain and tensioner if it's affected. Id rather pay the 3-400 quid to do it myself then wait for it to go bang under the warranty.

It would be a shame to waste this engine - it's only done 17k

17k and 6 services????? That camchain is never gonna be stretched. In fact I doubt the engine is run in yet!

The chain won't be. But the chain tensioner is a known fault and has been revised.

Mileage is one thing, how many hours the engine has been running for is another.

17k motorway miles is nothing.

17k city miles is a heck of a lot harder and will see a lot more wear and tear.

You can't judge it on mileage alone.

We shall see - I've just taken a new job and from July I'll be doing around 17-18K per year. I'm quite pleased about that as I'll be able to put some miles on it before the warranty runs out next April. At that mileage that gives me 5 years until 100K so I may or may not run into problems. Once the warranty is run out I may get the independent to examine the tensioner and replace it if it is an affected one. I guess I'll be wiser to move to variable servicing at 18K per annum too?

Well my skoda was dealer supplied and serviced and Skoda have told me tough now the gearbox has failed in under 5 years.

In my case dealer servicing has been a waste of money.

Don't bother after 5 years. It's more important to see that it has had regular oil changes even if it's an independent. It certainky won't make any real difference to your trade-in or selling orice.

Given the shenanigans at the main dealer last week, I'm switching to a local independent specialist from here on.

Cheers.

I guess it's all down to your intentions with the car.

I bought mine from a main dealer with 20k miles on it and 6 years old.

I had the first service done with them while it was still in warranty and since then I've done DIY servicing including oil & filters, air filters, brake discs and pads, brake fluid, DSG oil & filter and new rear bump stops.

The reason I'm not bothered about a dealer or garage stamp in the book is that I do not intent to sell the car anytime soon or at least if I do it will be at a time where it is barely worth anything anyway and a few DIY services won't make a difference anyway.

Obviously major work like the cambelt that is due next year it will go to a garage.

developing corrosion - and that they need replacement...   really???   That's a new one on me and sounds like a they are looking for work that isn;t necessary

I had several thousands of pounds of goodwill from Skoda UK on my out of warranty Octavia vRS a few years ago (PD170 injector recall fiasco / cold start issues / failed turbo).

I've just had a bodywork warranty claim approved on my 5 year old / 100,000 mile Superb.

My local dealer just price matched the cheapest local independant for a cambelt and waterpump (£340).

They pick the car up from my work and drop it off (or you can have a new courtesy car for free) and they wash and hoover it.

The stamp in the book is neither here nor there for me.

What I want is the best servcie at the best price. This means I swap and change between DIY (oil changes) a local trusted independant (rear bump stops / discs and pads) and the main dealer (goodwill payments / cambelt) depending on who is most keen for my business at the time the work needs doing.

  • 2 weeks later...

Log Book is joke and it doesn't matter anymore...I did all service by myself. It was better than from authorised dealer. I stamped log book with my Hajes Racing stamp. New buyers were always happy and nobody bothered.

During my life in UK I noticed most companies what is normal across the third world countries such as Czech Republic...authorised service doesn't carry any work and they are happy to give you 200€ stamp for good feeling of customers ;-)

Now, I usually buy wrecks from Germany with 160k km and full logbook...bin the logbook....replace all necessary and it still cost less money how aesthetically "perfect" logbook car...further more as my friend said "bloody hell your car has better performance how my younger almost new car"

things we are surrounded by are perfect reflection of our attitude. If you're cheap ignorant, you get same things around you
