Why don't the supermarkets do premium diesel fuel?

Featured Replies

I never understood why the big 3 supermarkets do premium unleaded in the form of Super (97-99) but never did matching premium diesel to go with it?

Thoughts?

Few reasons probably, not enough tanks, not enough demand, not enough margin. I don't think supermarkets really care what crap they sell, they make very little profit on fuel, it's mainly there for turnover and to get you to go there.

To be honest I've not even seen many with premium unleaded.

My local Tesco and Sainsbury's both do super unleaded on most pumps. The only Sainsbury's that didn't have it was on the isle of Wight!

Given how popular diesel is over petrol I just found it odd

They would need a producer of premium diesel that wants to supply them and they have their own outlets for their Branded Premium Diesel.

Royal Dutch Shell, BP and any others.

(maybe some agreement was reached but if there was that would be anti-competitive and illegal in the EU.)

Greenergy produces Tesco Momentum and much of Essos Fuels in the UK now and these are sold at Tesco or Tesco / Esso

forecourts.

I have no idea if they also supply Sainsburys with the Super Unleaded 97 ron.

It's rumoured that Sainsbury's 97 Ron Petrol is supplied by BP

If so there is a rather large price difference of Super Unleaded from out of Sainsbury's Pumps compared to the ridiculous price at many BP filling stations.

What is premium diesel anyway? Premium petrol has a purpose being higher octane, but diesel?

Yep Agreed George. My Local Sainsbury's 97 ron is only 4p dearer then 95 ron petrol.

To of my road is a BP Station ( busy  X Roads ) and the price difference can be as much as 20p. In Pannal ( 2 miles away on a busy road ) the difference is only 10p

A shell garage, another busy road 4 miles away the difference is again 10p

In Scotland the BP Super Unleaded is usually 8-9 pence higher than Sainsburys Super in the same areas.

There are some crazy high prices at Gulf stations with Super Unleaded, even 10 more again than BP.

EDIT.

Diesel is Cetane not Octane.

Because diesel premium products are just a psychological and marketing exercise and most people who fill up with fuel at supermarkets are after value?

Super unleaded is required for some cars and really does have an effect.

Here we go, wondered how long it would take to get round to this old chestnut. Million threads on this already, pretty sure we don't need to discuss the benefits (or not as some say) of higher cetane content with cleansing additives diesel here.

Show me anything which gives a proven benefit over using EN509 diesel.

There are plenty out there for super unleaded for cars that are designed or tuned to use it, just like performance cars used to need 4 star.

I'd love to see anything at all for premium diesel.

A diesel engine turns pretty slowly, the compression ratio is very high, the explosion is pretty controlled.

On the engine cleaner front, well many normal dervs claim to have them too (Shell for example).

At the end of the day, that might genuinely be the reason the supermarkets don't stock the stuff, is because 99% of derv drivers want cheap functional diesel and nothing fancy.

If you want the marketing story, then you have to go to a big chain and pay for it.

It's like groundhog day

Some petrol cars need Super unleaded ie 98 Octane or so or they get less economy and power.

No diesel "needs" premium diesel it is just pay a bit extra to get a bit of clever detergent in the fuel.

I assume by your Day to Day employment  you will be in the know about these things.   " Does the Clever Detergent make a difference and worth the extra penny's or shall I revert to Morrisons Sh!te "

I suppose the point is...its entirely up to you, knowing what you know about how your car runs

I'm not having a go at lol-lol I think this is his line of work.

I'm asking really if someone in the know thinks it's worth the extra penny''s for the clever detergent

I wasn't having a go at you having a go ;) Making the point that if someone has had a bad experience with supermarket fuel (as I and others have), or if they feel there car benefits from higher premium fuels like ultimate or v power and weigh it up that it is worth the extra, then buy it, each to their own and all that.

As in other threads if you get an mpg benefit you need to match that up to the higher cost to see if it's worth it. If your car prefers it then it doesn't really matter what the research (or lack of it) says.

I know I'd rather put in fuel of a consistent quality with a higher cetane rating and level of additives, and I've made that decision based on personal experience and comparisons to other fuels. Not to mention the tank of **** I ended up with from Morrisons.

Back on topic, maybe they don't stock it in supermarkets because their buyers are always caught in the same discussion we keep having in the forum and getting nowhere fast.

I don't see that higher cetane and levels of additives can ever be a bad thing, just as many people run supermarket fuel with no problems. For me no problems isn't good enough, what it means is, could be better.

My Octavia MKIII Tdi Vrs has only ever drunk Shell super diesel, she loves it................

My dad fills his CR140 Jetta with usually BP Ultimate for the last 70k. Not had any EGR, Turbo or DPF issues. Performance is strong and he sees a healthy 3-4MPG improvement. He is happy to pay it.

The detergents must be helping to burn cleaner and keep things cleaner?

Funnily enough I've recently found BP ultimate preferable for my car, was always a v power man but have no v power diesel anywhere near. In fact the ultimate is a half hour drive away, been filling up regularly recently as I've been working over there. Mpg benefits aside which may be negated, I'm beginning to think that as it runs so nicely on it it's worth the drive to go and get it. Besides driving through rural mid wales isn't that much of a drag!
