Broken Ignition Key new blade and fob needed ?

Featured Replies

We have a 62 plate Skoda Octavia estate and my partner managed to break the key off in the ignition yesterday.

We have managed to get it out and we are being quoted between £270 and £370 for a replacement.

Any idea where best to go and is it cheaper if you go to them ?

We are 42 miles down the A9 from Kinverness at Kingussie.

Thanks

Ruaridh

I thought that you could change the blades on these keys , just get a replacement blank blade from ebay and fit it to your fob.  A locksmith should be able to cut the new key blank to your old one.?

If the key was previously hard to turn in the lock you may as well replace the switch/lock assembly. However, if the driver was trying to turn the key against the steering lock then you just need a new key blade as said above.

OK we got a new key made in Timpson's in Inverness but it does not fit the fob so we have to use them seperately and hold the fob close to the ignition to start it or you get a Non Key message and it cuts out - will try keys in the post and other leads for now - does nobody know a dedicated Auto Locksmith near Inverness ??

For all the messing about and difficulty people can have getting non genuine keys to work it seems to be more cost effective to go to the dealer and buy an original.

A full key including coding shouldn't be costing you any more than £225.

Thanks for the help will reply once we find a solution :-)

Did you take the original key into timpsons or tell them what the vehicle was?

If so they have a responsibility to have sold you the right key blank and should fix it.

The dealer can supply just they key blade though, so I think they're taking the pee a bit too.

OK here is update :-)

All sorted and for not too  much money.

Went to Timpsons Key Cutters in the Insh's Tesco Store at Inverness - they are "automotive key specialists" - their words - but not automotive locksmiths.

We go another new blade cut from the original broken key that is the flip type and fits the original Skoda 3 button fob - all for £7 - so that is us back to where we started :-)

Also we ordered another complete unit for a spare as we never had a spare key with this car when it was bought - new 3 button fob and  flip key supplied and programmed for £150.00 only.

I cannot recommend Timpsons highly enough  and they were very very helpful - we will be using them again as not only do they do keys but the do engraving, house signs, sewing and clothes repairs, alterations - the list is endless at the Tesco Insh's Store in Inverness.
