Diesel days are numbered according to Renault, Peugeot & VW

Featured Replies

Do you mean the Residual values of out of manufacturers warranty age diesels in the UK?

Not going to be much of a drop is it as many are only worth a couple of thousand squids now!

If Porsche Panamera or Macan are going to be selling for Much Cheapness that will be nice, just park and ride.

But they'll be making their investment plans now for the predictable future, such as it is.

'They' as in Governments signed up for Emissions and Pollution reduction a long time ago.

The EU & European Governments made plans for Vehicle Emissions Reductions in Euro 5, Euro 6 & even Euro 7 vehicles.

Then Germany, the UK and others let the manufacturers take the p!th, even aiding and abetting in the Co2 & NoX Irregularities.

So all the outrage in the world counts for nothing as Government Elected Members, Civil Servants & Agencies allowed what has gone on in the past decade or even 2.

It was just put off as something that could be addressed sometime but keep saying that plans are in motion.

So now they are going to act, really quickly, well they are talking about quick, but then the Car Manufacturers will tell them when they can, after all they pay the piper.

But they'll be making their investment plans now for the predictable future, such as it is.

True,

But the point I was making is that it will not be enforced until 2025 at the earliest (if at all - it may all yet change), and given the rate I and many others buy cars it'll probably not affect us until about 2035...

The ICE has to survive to start with and driverless ones are on the horizon also.

The Electric & Self Drive passenger vehicles will be just lovely in Cities and some other areas.

Even last Mile commercial deliveries maybe, and other commercial use where appropriate.

As to light & heavy haulage and longer distance passenger journeys in Europe and many other world regions it will be internal combustion engines for a long time to come.

We have almost a thousand charge points in London and will have 5,000 within a couple of years to charge our Blue Solution hire cars but also all other electric cars.  Cities like Tokyo already have as many charge points as fossil fuel stations and the gap is widening quickly.  https://www.sourcelondon.net/about-source-london

Our cars have an urban mileage range of 250 kms and could be used for journeys from Inner London out to the airports and they rapid charge. As faster charging, rather than the 45/47 kw but up to the 125/150 kw/hr charging points are able to charge the vehicle whilst one pops in to the service area for a comfort break.

Cannot imagine a charging point being too popular in Aberdeen and could risk the fate of some speed cameras I imagine.

I think vehicles do need an internal combustion engine but it only needs to be single cylinder and about 25 Kws at most and 100 Kws for even a 44 tonner would  be sufficient I reckon for those long motorway or trunk road journeys.

Better start to re-imagine then.

Check out how many Aberdeen have, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow etc.

Then check out how much the Council are going to spend on Charging Points at a new Car Park in Broughty Ferry.

http://greenerscotland.org/greener-travel/greener-driving/charge-point-map

Just Free Public, but obviously there are lots of 'Not Free' and Private charge points, & Plenty of EV's selling or being leased.

Near the train station...across from the Public Library.

Check out the Dundee Taxi Firm running EV's, leased out to drivers.

Check the EV Hire Club in the likes of St Andrews,  on the Northern Isles & elsewhere, check out the unused Renewable Electricity Generated in Scotland and the Wind farm / Turbines turned off.

There are a few wee rentable 'leccy cars at that point in the Ferry. TBH seems like a reasonable idea but no clue as to how well used they are.

All well and good until we can't turn the lights on - electric generation in the uk has been put at huge risk, just look at the % free every year dropping.

Getting rid of base load stations like all the big coal fired stations will do wonders for CO2 production and very little for energy security.

True,

Then look at the Off-Peak generation and available generation not being made but the companies still being paid.

All that available electricity that could be stored in Vehicle Battery / Power Packs, making Hydrogen etc,  only the Government never invested enough in the infrastructure,

Interconnectors & the likes, they just kept signing contracts and giving grants to Manufacturers & Investors & Land Owners and changing the tariffs.

Never bothered with the Carbon Capture Schemes, just the Competitions to get the Scheme, then they hurry up and slow down...then stop, change the Governments Policy.

Like with Solar, & onshore wind.

What is wrong with our Great British coal that we have in abundance? We need to dig it up and start burning it,It is no use stuck under the ground.

Best where it is, kept for a rainy day, maybe an acid rainy day.

Time to start getting the Coal Seam Gas Extraction going as the Licences are already sold in the UK.

Considering that Grangemouth needs the gas and are importing it yet it is readily available within 100 miles of where it will eventually get used.

We've gone through the privatisation process and all we got was short term profit motivation, and then when they've got bored with the toys (made their money and run it down) they throw them away.

Our gas has gone the same way with transnational shareholders owning it and now having to pay international market price for what was once OURS!........now we are running out........the polies are looking to get reelected though with lots of tax brakes as 'look over there' distractions.

Does any country have an energy security policy these days......shorttermism everywhere it seems

Looks like more diesel standby generators will be needed at this rate.

Here they are being and have been closed down before the alternatives were available and while the extended life nuclear generators might have to shut down because they are not safe, or just seaweed in the intakes might cause a bit of a panic.

Where are that Special Boat Service section when you need them?,  they will be off guarding the Nuclear Waste being flown out of Wick to the USA.

Nice to see the Eu is taking UK and other countries to task over doing f*** all over the emissions scandal

Sod batteries, the automotive industry should put money into super capacitors:

http://www.bristol.ac.uk/news/2016/december/super-capacitors.html

I'd switch to an EV if it had a ~200 mile range and recharge time of a couple of minutes.

Company I work for already does this......  http://www.bollore.com/en-us/the-group/corporate-movie/electric-batteries-and-vehicles-supercapacitors

Most, if not all, EVs are a mixture of battery and Supercapacitors.   Batteries have the higher storage density but Supercapacitors the much higher charging rate.

We do cars (thousands already in Paris) and buses up to 12m and 100 passenger.

The superquick (ie seconds), supercapacitor charger (20 seconds in) shows the routine which I expect something similar will be how EVs will use the new 350 KW/hr charging points planned (charge a 30 Kw system in about 5 minutes).

The EU should be taking VAG to task and compensating VAG car owners like they are in the USA but seeing the EU is run by Germany is guess it would come to nothing. Also nothing is said about the German coal fired power stations but hey the Nazis won the world war in 1945,

Diesel even seem number as cars the UK Government use.

Government still has harmful diesel cars

Tory MP Andrew Selous says he welcomes action on air quality to help curb the 40,000 early deaths it causes each year.

He says she can start by removing all diesel cars from the government fleet “as soon as possible”.

“We are determined to cut harmful emissions,” she (Ms T May) replies.

She  says a quarter have been replaced with petrol hybrid cars so far and the work continues.
