Smallest wheels for VRS 230

Featured Replies

I took delivery of my new VRS 230 estate last week and I'm already thinking of a second set of wheels and tyres for winter.

The VRS 230 has the larger front brakes (340mm I think), just wondered if anyone had any experience in fitting smaller wheels, and what will clear the front brakes?

Obviously 18" wheels will fit, but has anyone tried to fit 17" or even 16" wheels?

17" is the smallest possible, if the brakes are same size as a normal vrs tsi.

Thanks for the info guys, looks like I should get away with 17" then.

I have stock Skoda 17" for winter wheels and they confirm they are a VERY tight fit on the 340mm brakes.

Bit too close for comfort - I feel if a stone gets there it will cause damage.

Did you measure the brakes? On my mates 230 the brakes are stock vRS.

Stock VRS, for gas engine, is 340mm.

FYI the pinch point is between the inside of the wheels and the outside of the brake calipers which is curved to follow the profile of the wheel but leaves less than 5mm clearance so the big (plastic?) balancing weights can catch if a lot of weight is needed. I found one wheel just snagged taking a thin layer of paint off, but the other was fine.

According to this official chart:

A vRS 230 should take 17" wheels as a minimum (with the appropriate indicated tyre sizes). I'm not sure what I will get myself as I hate the low caliper clearance. I would definitely love to have just 17" and not 18" for winter. I'll probably just swing by a larger wheels dealer and see if various models vary in fit and choose accordingly.

Not in the Uk as my mates are 328mm.

He is talking about the Octavia MK3 (it is the mk3 forum after all :D )

328mm was standard on earlier models not the Mk3

I'm fully aware where I am. Will measure my mates at the earliest opportunity. 340mm is Golf Performance Pack size which I understood to be not fitted to the Octy 230.

As far as I know all mk3 vrs' has 340mm discs. That was until they reduced the size on the tdi. But all petrol vrs' still has it?

Mine are 340mm .....220 not the 230.

I think the 230 has the GP Pack.  If you look in the Brochure it gives the spes for the 220 Vrs ( which has the GP Pack on the Tsi ) and then it lists the Extra Spec for the 230 Vrs

Its only the MY16 diesel that has the smaller discs.

The petrol vRS still has 340mm brakes even for the 220ps version.

You can fit 17" wheels (I have on mine) but the clearance is very tight.

The tyre fitter would need to know you need to use the low profile weights when balancing.

The standard weights (~1cm thick) will interferre with the brake calipers for sure.

@ Gabbo,  Do you happen to know what date the MY17 cars start please?

MK3 vRS have either 340x30mm (same as Golf PP) or if it is a newer vRS TDi they have 312x25mm (same as std Golf GTi) all have 272x10mm rear.

Generally after week 22 is the next Model Year (it was for MY16) BW22 for 2016 was 30th May to 5th June I think.

17" wheels should clear 340mm brakes but be careful of the design, some are closer than others, especially if thick balance weights are used. Steels for winter/spare should be fine as the metal is generally thinner. I find OEM VAG wheels seem designed to clear the 340s but some aftermarket wheels can be tighter

I purchased a set of ATS Radial 7.5x17 5x112 ET50 for my VRS' winter tyres. I ordered them from tyreleader.co.uk (German company) for £322 delivered. They came with correct spigots and wheel bolts included, and arrived within 4-5 days. They fit 340mm discs just fine, and look very similar to stock Gemini's. They are TUV approved and within VW/Skoda spec so should not cause any issues with insurance. I also purchased tyres from them (winter Nokian WR D3 225/45 R17's).

^^ this

the design/shape of the spoke can be a problem, even on bigger rims. on the mk2s some of the guys had upgraded to the 340mm setup and found that the shape of the spoke on the OEM neptune 18" would clash with the caliper.

These will be my new winter wheels for my 230, 17" Octavia MKIII Vrs Wheels from Leon's Cyprus specced Vrs. As you can see the standard Cypres 17" Vrs wheels fit over the 340mm front brakes.

Those do fit, cause I had the same on my car, but yet again, they are a tight fit..
