merry bloody christmas :(

Featured Replies

well, without warning this morning my gearbox blew up (i think?) .. found these in the bottom of the engine bay (pic below), engine still starts and runs and the gear stick feels like its going into gear, but when i bring the clutch out nothing happens, and it doesn't stall either .. so its not selecting anything obviously

is it even worth repairing? (2004 1.2 comfort) .. how much would i roughly be talking to get it sorted?

If you're right, there will be a big, ah, "go away" hole in the gearbox casing, and litres of transmission oil about.

i cant see a hole but then again i havnt been able to have a proper look .. it happened on the A1 at about 65mph so couldnt go back to look at anything left behind on the road .. but could it even be anything else?

Nope, that's part of your differential and gearbox casing so the diff's blown, in other words, it's fakt.

worth repairing? only just bloody paid out for insurance and tax etc

Cheapest way would be a second hand gearbox and as you are changing boxes you'd be stupid not to change the clutch.

How much for a used box around your way? How much to fit it? The old one is scrap!

yeah i was thinking second hand gearbox and clutch.. but i'd have no idea how much that would set me back?

thanks, which gearboxes would fit?

There is some slightly better news; changing the clutch when the gearbox is being changed should only take about 30 minutes extra.

Damn what a Christmas present :(

If you have the service book there is a sticker inside the front with your gearbox code on it. There is also a duplicate sticker under the boot carpet. For example, my gearbox code is FNK...

I don't think a FNK gearbox is suitable for a 1.2 engine.

Oh wait, you're right, FNK is Skodas own box, the 1.2 will use a VW box for cross-platform compatibility with all the Polo based cars.

I thought the 1.2 engine was a Skoda engine? Hence probably a skoda gearbox as well

No the 1.4, 8 valve is the only Skoda engine they used, carried over from the Felicia (and slightly modified).

I know, let's just wait until the OP has looked at the sticker in the boot.

no thats the only petrol fabia box that won't work sorry, pretty much any of the 02T box's will physically bolt in but I'd aim for one from a 1.2 engine'd car polo,ibiza/fabia so the ratios are right.

I'd be interested to know how the diff cross pin got to break in yours as it's usually bearing trouble with the smaller box's.

thanks for the reples, with mine being a 2004 comfort model that should make the gearbox GSB
