No Software changes by dealership service

Featured Replies

I've read on Briskoda the useful changes that can be made to the octavia software, so saved up some requests for the first service yesterday.

1 add rear lights 'on' with drl's

2 button inside car to close as well as open tailgate

3 show fan speed when air con is in auto mode

Dealership response, no can do. No explanation forthcoming so could be lack of technical knowledge, lack of training, or just not interested. I expect the latter.

Has anyone experience of a dealer completing a software change request?

These changes are made by VCDS - dealers don't have it as it is third party software and not officially recognised.

Many members on here have VCDS and will do the changes you want for you - I have all you mention except tailgate function as mine is manual.

The changes are not supported by the dealer network.

So if you go down that route and encounter a problem you're on your own.

VCDS is powerful but dangerous. Worst case you can 'brick' your car.

I would not recommend messing with it in warranty.

my dealer seems quite unaware (officially) that some of us can make changes to the way our cars behave too. At the last service they reported an error with the front indicators and drls as they flashed alternately and they couldn't find out why . They claimed they spent over an hour trying to locate the problem and were somewhat surprised when I told them I had done it intentionally!

If you follow the simple to use instructions from the thread, they are pretty simple to do, chances of bricking your car are very small.

Yeah I'd agree with this. I've just stuck to adaptations and not coding. Less to go wrong IMO and if I can do it anyone can.

That is why I always revert my visible changes before the car goes in for service. :D

DRL dimming while indicating, CH/LH with fogs, disabled Start-Stop, needle staging, etc...

I think you might be confusing updating with new software, vs reconfiguring the existing software. Sometimes new software is available for a module that gives additional or changed functionality, bug fix etc. But that is not the same as reconfiguring the existing software by adaptation or coding using VCDS. Dealers can do the former but not the latter as they would be making the car deviate from the manufacturer's specifications and intentions.

Thanks for advice and comments. I had assumed that VCDS was what dealers use to make changes when servicing/repairing. Not wanting any excuse for warranty issues, I'll take the advice of waiting awhile and live without the changes I think.

Dealers are supplied with ODIS by skoda, some also have VCDS. What has probably happened is the dealer are unaware of what those changes are or how to do them.

ODIS (in the right hands) is capable of everything VCDS can do and much more.

As for changing adaption channels under warranty and bricking modules - you shouldn't encounter any warranty issues and you really have to try hard to maul a control module (or use a Chinese lead).

My dealer has said they are happy to enable the power trunk closing from key fob and dash button when I take it for an oil service next week...

Rear lights with Drls can definitely be done by a dealer.

It's the same as mud flaps that won't fit a vRS!

Is this rear lights with Drls all the time? Reason I ask is my Brother reckons his Golf has been setup for 1) Drls 2) Drls plus rear 3)Drls plus dipped beam and rears. I assume as the light deteriorates they activate in that sequence, though haven't seen it with my own eyes.

Drls on the front and rear lights on all the time.

It's so you've got lights on front and rear in poor visibility mainly.

Rather than as you see currently on cars with Drls but no lights on the rear.

Just like Saab and Volvo started in the 1970's and I believe will become regulation this/next year on all new cars.

Yes, I remember my old man's 900 looked really distinct with the daylights.

Makes sense to have the rears come on as Auto lights are not reliable in fog or those post dawn/pre dusk times. I was that driver last weekend, driving in the fog until I realised the Auto lights hadn't picked up on the fog! You reckon dealers are happy to make those adjustments?

Provided they aren't illegal they should have no issues.
