What oil in your Octavia vRS 220 Petrol ?

Featured Replies

As per thread post - manual is not so helpful and just says 504. Dealer underfilled a bit on my last service and I've been meaning to get a L or more to fill properly.

I guess its some kind of Quantum. Is it really the same kind of Quantum synth oil as my wifes mk2 1.2 htp and needs nothing higher perforamcne ?

I've got a bottle of  Quantum Longlife III  (504 spec) for top ups. If that's wrong I'll take it back as that was what was recommended (my local TPS). I'm on Fixed Intervals. From what I've gathered it's the same oil as the variable, but just not in the engine for as long. I'm no oil expert so happy to be corrected.

I think I've still got some left of a bottle somewhere from service for the wifes so will just use that then if so ! Thanks for confirming, it does say that in the manual.

I've used Quantum happily until now but thats on the Fabia 1.9 vRS isn't quite so high performance ( on BHP anyway ).

Quantum Longlife 3 is the right stuff, it's basically 5w30 to 504/507 spec. Castrol Edge 5w30 also suitable and a number of other oils. Think there might even be a Shell 0w30 that can be used. As long as it's 504/507 rated it's all good.

MOTUL SPECIFIC 504 00 507 00 5W-30

What about this stuff?

Seems to cheap? im asking as i want to change my oil in between services.

It seems to meet the specification but personally I would rather use the Quantum oil or Castrol, anything that is vital for your vehicle I would not scrimp n save but the choice is down to you!

If I was doing what you want to do as regards changing the oil in between services then I would just buy the proper stuff   B)

You might be able to get the oil cheaper from TPS, if your local branch sell to you.

Castrol Edge 5W-30  -  I had to buy some a week before Xmas and this is the stuff I got

Car came from factory with Castrol 5w30 but just had it's first service and the dealer has put shell helix 0w30 in instead. They claimed they had approval from Skoda to use the shell oil. So far everything is running buttery smooth.

Have used this on both the current and previous vRS.

Just had a short chat to my local Skoda parts manager. Says they've changed contract and are stocking Mobil 1 now, 5w40 recommended for my petrol vRS 220. BUT they're asking £18 Inc VAT for a 1 litre top up bottle. At the service 6 months ago they used Castrol Magnatec. 2 litres of Tesco own brand 5w40, fully synthetic, VW 502 spec is £16. Going with the Tesco option.

@sulus1179,

@WesternDuke,

do you see any difference b/n Castrol and Shell. Have to do similar choise very soon. Shell is cheaper, Castrol has bad reviews in the net.

But how do you find your engine - sound, refined work, etc.

Thanks!

I have never used the Shell product and have always been happy with Castrol. Price has never bothered me particularly - if it meets the specification then it's fine by me.  I look on oil the same as tyres - quality over price any day.

4 litres of VW 502 00 5w 40 Full Synthetic from ASDA in an ASDA Container for about £20.

Proper oil from proper Oil Producers and perfect for a TSI getting fixed oil and filter servicing.

As with from TESCO, COMMA or anyone else.

I’d love to see the reaction when Service time comes round and I’m telling them that I’m supplying my own Asda oil this year!!

For the top-up I used Comma Syner-G from a local car supplies chain.

None of their £12 a litre retail then VAT on top that was sourced at great expense by them. NOT!

Have a look at Euro Car Parts, they've got a 35% discount offer on at the moment using discount code MAY75.

I can get a 5ltr bottle of Shell Helix Ultra (5W40) for £23.07, I might pop down there for a bottle to keep in the car.

PM Mike at Briskoda parts & you guys won’t believe the fantastic price he gives you for 5L of Castrol edge 5w-30w, price also includes delivery & compared to the usual online or shop sellers, it’s nearly half the price B)

To be honest when it comes to oil, we all know there is quite a few named brands that spring to mind & maybe the quality of the oil in the cheaper 5L bottles is probably fine but if you’re saving £5-£10 on a 5L bottle of oil, eg: Asda 5L £12 Castrol 5L £19-£25 Quantum 5L £19-£25 etc. Don’t get me wrong every saving helps out but if local Halfords, ECP etc are selling name brands at extortionate cost, then why not buy the Quantum or Castrol 5L oil online or from Mike @ Briskoda Parts & save half the price.

VW504/507.00 is the required grade. Dunno about VW502.00.

Not the Required Grade, there are options, look at your Owners Manual.

VW 504/507 is required for Variable / Flexible servicing and will be 5w 30 FF LL commonly.

http://volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/regimes

VW 502 is perfect for Fixed Servicing, 372 days / 9,400 miles or sooner.   Commonly 5w 40 FS.

Long Life Oil, short life VW TSI engines quite commonly.

Now the 1.5 TSI is leaving the factory with VW 508 00.   0w20 FS LL

BATVANVRS,

Do you think that the biggest retailers in the world actually get their oils from some oil producer other than the best ones & are selling customers some inferior product.

Shell / Castrol / Total / Fuchs / Mobile have no special secrets.

Maybe the oils recommended by Japanese Car makers with more reliable engines are the ones to use rather than the VW Groups recommended brand seeing the failure rate of VW , Merc & BMW engines out of Warranty.

I don't know where or who & to be honest I'm not really bothered, all I know is, I'm saving money by buying the oil that is commonly used by dealers & by independent garages, even recommended by them, I'm just buying it via trade price & getting it a lot cheaper, I'm not saying the other oils are inferior, I even said above your'e post that its probably fine to use so if you are happy to use: Shell / Castrol / Total / Fuchs / Mobile etc then great, I'm happy using what I've been using since 40k miles (Castrol-Quantum) but personally for my own car being a (Skoda) I would rather use what has been used from day one.

That is how it rolls. n VW Group Recommend Castrol, the Dealers use Quantum,  French Manufacturers recommend Total.

People stick with the 2nd biggest manufacturers in the worlds recommendations, after all they give 2 or 3 years manufacturers warranty and never build a bad TSI engine.

When I use to own a Astra van 1.9cdti se (2008) that from day one was always serviced with Mobil 1 oil 0w-40w even after manufacturers warranty had finished, sometimes even twice a year I would do a oil change, engine run sweet as a nut, even sold the vehicle with 66,000 miles trouble free & is still going strong on the same oil, I even have a VX trade member card & could of brought the VX oil which I find is of decent spec/quality but because I use to do a fair few miles, I didn't mind to keep on using the Mobil 1 oil & that I wasn't even getting on trade price, only sometimes the Mobil oil was on offer so was a bonus.

There all pretty much the same (so I hear what you are saying) but its down to "what you prefer to use & willing to pay" I was happy to pay for Mobil 1, chances are it probably would be alright even on the VX oil or other brands. (who knows)

If this Owner used Castrol or Quantum then result.
