What goodies have you bought for your Superb III?

Before getting the car...

  • Reversible boot mat.
  • Winter tyres and extra set of wheels.

After receiving the car...

  • Replaced rear indicators and reversing lights with Cree LED.
  • RaceChip Ultimate (280 PS to 350 PS)
  • RaceChip Response Control (best thing I've fitted so far)
  • Blackvue dual dash cam with battery pack (still in the box, a recently acquired but non-urgent project that I'll start when it's a bit warmer)

Does the response control work as good as they say looking at one for my 190 tdi ?

cheers

  • I fitted a bumper protector from www.rearguards.co.uk to my Superb Combi - relatively easy to fit, just try it without removing the backing from the double sided tape first and mark it out using maski

IMHO - Yes, but don't take just my word for it as you've no doubt seen comments from others in various threads (if not, do a search for Response Control, RaceChip or even Pedal Box).

It results in a major transformation of how the car behaves.

I could happily live without the power boost I fitted, if I had to, but I wouldn't want to be without the Response Control. If you feel you suffer what appears to be throttle lag then rest assured that it disappears with Response Control and with six response settings there will be one to suit your own style of driving (the second highest setting is my personal preference, the highest is just animal - but fun in small doses).

Thanks for that will definitely have a look I find the throttle response a bit lacking until you nail it then it takes off like a scalded cat I find it fine when over 20 mph up to then it's like your driving in mud,

cheers

Ok I am thinking some new bulbs for the sportline, same the led interior flood lights are no longer available from Gizmo's post. Think I deffo get some of the boot leds and possibly reversing bulbs, for reference is it one bulb or two? I am waiting for my car to come back from Gtechniq etc so cant check...

I can't answer 100% for the Sportline but it's two x bulbs for two x reversing lights on the L&K. Can't imagine the Sportline would be any different as they have the same rear light cluster.

Correct Alex, they all use 2 reversing light bulbs.

Thanks Gizmo. I think I might have to go for a pair then. Are they easy to fit?

Yes dead easy, the light has to come out but that's only 2 screws, all covered in the handbook.

Gizmo, do the light units slide out in a straight & backwards direction once the screws are undone?  I would assume there's a plastic locating 'pin' of sorts too?

You need to remove a plastic cover to access the two mounting screws. The tools needed are provided with the car. The rear light clusters slide forward and out (or backwards and out depending on your perspective). Two locating lugs are at the rear. You can disconnect the wiring, it's just a plug, but I managed to replace bulbs without fully removing the cluster. Just be careful to keep a good grip of the cluster. If it drops it may cause damage to your paintwork.

Fantastic stuff! Thanks for taking the time to post. I, on the other hand do not have a dog or a rubber fetish :)

Deffo want something to protect my key fobs (either silicone or leather pouch) and a good hatch bootguard.

I also want to see what coding tweaks I can get via VCDS with a fairly standard Sportline. Ive tried reading the related posts but can figure it out (must be an age thing!)

Will have to make another post for that.

I am near Leicester and have VCDS, happy to give you a hand with coding.

Thank Micloi, that would be fantastic! Havent really figured out whats possible with the sportline yet, need to have a good read of the VCDS section but I suspect you might know a thing or too being a long time member (I remember you from my VRS days on the forum). Would be good to meet too.

Cheers

Lovely will do. Thanks again.

My car has not yet been delivered but in preparation I've bought a Moto G4 Play purely to use with Android Auto (only £79 if anyone else is looking for a handset for the same purpose.

(I use an iPhone as my actual mobile but like the option of having Google maps to get advance warning of traffic - particularly standing traffic on the motorway)

Also planning to get:
rubber floor mats
Sonax xtreme screenwash
Better dipped and main h7 bulbs - not sure which yet
Short USB cable for phone/s
iPad headrest mount
A boot liner of some description

Is there a definitive list anywhere of Android phones that have been tested and confirmed as working with Android Auto and the Columbus?

I think there was a thread on here that I was before, but I don't remember this phone being on it so its a bit of a wait and see. I can let you know a week tomorrow all being well!

Some good ideas there especially short usb cables and phone for the car, I would like Qi compatible phone for my phone box but fear that would add significantly to the cost unless anyone has any ideas.

Ive now ordered:

Boot liner (delayed so may now cancel and re-order elsewhere)

Rear indicator/ reverse / Boot/ Glove box leds thanks to Gizmos posts on bulbs.

Key fob leather case from Flee Bay.

Unless I'm misunderstanding how it works, if you're planning to use Android Auto it has to be plugged in so it matters not whether the phone is capable of wireless charging.

I've stumbled across this detailed post which is the kind of thing I'm hoping to achieve in so far as Android Auto is concerned. I'll be able to confirm if it all works as hoped next weekend if all goes to plan.

One of the suggestions which I did consider was just getting a used Nexus 5 off eBay (you can potentially get these very cheap as it wouldn't matter if the screen was cracked or there was other cosmetic damage as it would just stay in the phone box). In the end I went for the Moto G4 Play though as with discounts it was not a lot more (see here for discount details once they are back in stock - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/moto-g4-play-back-stock-white-only-now-motorola-2616958 - alternatively I think they can be had for £89 on O2 PAYG).

If you had a choice of phone to pair with the car would you go iPhone or android? I'm an android man but just been offered an iPhone 6 for a good price although it wouldnt make use of my wireless charging facility. What's the iPhone software like in the car?

I've not yet used it in a Superb, but in a previous car Apple CarPlay worked well - but the main issue was I didn't really get on with the Apple maps navigation - it always seemed to give the verbal instruction a little too late for my liking, and the traffic overlay wasn't as visible as I'd like. Everything else was great though, very good with Apple Music because you can basically invoke Siri and request any song (as long as you've got decent mobile reception of course).

Remember as well that whichever you are using (Android Auto or CarPlay) the wireless charging is effectively redundant as the phone has to be plugged in at all times.

When I get my Superb in a week, I'll be trying out both systems again. I was actually trying to figure out if there is a way of having both phones connected at once so I can just switch between the 2 systems through the headunit menu - but I don't think it is technically possible - so will just have the Android phone in the phonebox with a short lead (probably a reversible micro usb one like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/SKYREAT-Reversible-Plugable-Charging-Cable-3/dp/B01H6WJONS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1486928260&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=reversible+micro+usb&psc=1) and the iPhone on a magnetic air vent mount and a reversible usb-lightening cable (like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/equinux-tizi-black-lightning-cable/dp/B0191YBPMW/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1486912924&sr=8-5&keywords=black%2Breversible%2Blightning%2Bcable&th=1) down to a discreet 12v usb adaptor. I should then be able to switch between the 2 systems by just swapping which USB is plugged into the 12v adaptor and which is plugged directly into the car. Having reversible USB connectors on both leads will make switching them over very simple.
