Steering angle sensor after slip ring replacement

Featured Replies

when you removed the old one was the ribbon marker (black boxes on the ribbon) in between the marks? (curved plastic)

and was it like that on the new one?

I refer to the 0 degree position as shown in the one

Thank you so much for the discussion and tips guys!

I finally managed to fix it, just have to cancel the dealership booking for tomorrow.

I will come back with the solution tomorrow so that others can benefit from my experience. - yes, it has to do with the plastic bits that the sensors use to read rotation.

In abs esp should u set this not 44 steering...g85 is in abs.....

All good now. Lights are out and the servo is back too.

Bottom line is, the slip ring I bought from a Golf 5 had different kind of plastic bits that would pass over the steering angle sensor. As shown in the post above, those teeth are more numerous and they are smaller with less space in between. This would just messup the reading from the steering angle sensor.

Check this picture: The left one is the part I tried to use from a Golf V. The right one was my original. Other than that, the parts are identical and they even have the exact same part number Including the letters under the part number.

So I just took this round plastic part from my original slip ring and fitted it to the Golf V slip ring.

To do this, look at the slip ring from the front side. Inside the donut shaped ring, you can see how the top transparent plastic cover is fitted to the ring but also how the bottom black plastic part is fitted to the ring.

Before you actually take it apart, just scratch or mark the position of the slip ring so that when you put it on another slip ring you get it the right way. (The right slip ring in the picture above is the correct position (assuming the ring itself is also centered)

I used a sharp metal piece (a circuit tester) to pry off the plastic bits. Keep in mind when you do so you need to place something in between the black plastic bit and the white slip ring bits so that they stay open. I used toothpicks - just stuck them in between the space created when prying them off. Finally, after you pry off the 3rd bit, use your finger to push the black part off. Afterwards it just clicks back in real easy.

Then, after everything was put back together, I ran through the calibration process found here:

The servo came back to life only after the steering limit adjustment but other than that, the sensor could now read accurate and correct values.

Thankfully, nowadays we have the internet and we can research and learn about how things work so we can DIY. :)

Once again, thank you guys for your support, ideas and the discussion this generated! I hope other DIY enthusiasts will be able to benefit from this thread.

PS: I can't seem to figure out how to mark this thread as fixed?
