Steering angle sensor after slip ring replacement

Featured Replies

Greetings.

I know there is another thread about this but as it has been solved, no clear "how to" fix guide has been mentioned...

I have finally had time to swap out the slip ring on my 07 Octavia. The reason for replacement was the horn related errors in the Central Elect and the Steering wheel.

The part is coming from a mk5 Golf and that's all I know about it (same part number as my original:  1K0959653 )

The horn now works fine and everything seems to be in place after a drive test.

However, I get a different error now and the steering and esp is lit up in the dash both in yellow.

So I look this up and find the procedure for the basic settings on ross-tech and follow them with no success....

What can I try next? The steering seems to be softer than before the change (I don't mind this really) and the wheel will not return to its centre position after a slight bend.

Not sure if it helps but here's the details for the ABS:

Hi Mike,

Thanks for answering, this is what I just said though. I have tried the procedures and they didn't help. I do not get the OK in the status field in the vcds :(

I will try again today after work though...

The guide is a little vague here for example:

  • If the steering wheel is straight during the test drive then stop the vehicle with the wheels pointed straight.

OK so what if it's not? Since the sensor is not yet calibrated then the steering will not straighten after driving a short distance at small speeds...

Might sound daft but when you removed the old slip ring, were the front wheels straight?

And was the new Slip ring in the centre position?

if you look at measuring values for the G85 if it is not within the tolerance level you won't be able to perform basic settings

  • Author

Yes - the wheels were straight and I made sure the ring is at its center position.

The new ring could turn 3 and a half turns to the left and 3 and a half turns to the right so I placed it in the middle.

I have just given it another attempt.

[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 060
[Go!]  <-------------------------------- At this step
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]

After I hit Go!, the adjustment field says OK but the adjustment Status shows -71.92 degrees. As soon as I choose the adjustment of steering angle sensor setting or press ON/OFF/Next, the adjustment field goes to Not Possible...

So basically I am stuck at this step. What could be wrong here? I made sure the wheels are straight when I installed this and even assuming I did not install the slip ring correctly, it cannot be 70 degrees off because you can only get it wrong by 180 IF you get it wrong...

I am starting to get worried now.... any help would be much appreciated... Heading down to the dealership is not an option since the guy down there is an asshole and they charge 94 euros/hour.

have you had anything done to the steering rack?

  • Author

Nothing - I had only replaced the slip ring. The flat cable in the old one used to trigger the horn randomly and cause Central Elect and Steering wheel errors. Now they are all gone and suddenly I got the Steering assist defective error and an intermittent climate control error :(

Have I, by any chance, not clicked the control unit back onto the slip ring and steering angle sensor?

I am a little hesitant from dismantling the steering wheel again because I don't know how if the bolt will still hold in place after too many unscrews.

  • Author

Still no luck - tried the procedure many times already.

What is weird is that every time I run a scan, I get different errors on the Steering assist... Either defective, either intermittent signal, either lost basic settings.... Could this mean the sensor has gone bad or is it not sitting properly?

-71.92 degs ?  not quite sure but shouldn't this be 0 deg when the wheels are straight - so if right either the slip ring had moved round when its been removed or its now faulty.

have a look at the ross tech wiki again im sure it shows it as 0 deg with wheels straight.

Also remember that it will not program if you have any abs errors, these must be repaired first.

  • Author

I had no previous ABS errors and yes - it shows -71.92 degs instead of 0 or thereabout.... with the wheels straight of course. Would you blame the steering angle sensor or the slip ring? The slip ring is turned just as much as the previous one was - I made sure of that and it was only removed with the wheels straight and then back on with the wheels straight.

:( This is still not solved... Would power cycling the car or reconnecting the steering control module (can be done without removing the steering wheel) help?

If it was me I would remove the wheel when it's straight and set the slip ring at 0 degrees and go from there.

There's no way you can get this wrong by 70 degrees. The slip ring has some plastic bits that stick through the steering wheel when you put it on. If you get the slip ring rotation wrong you either get it by +360 or -360 degrees, know what I mean?

Try taking off the slip ring and moving it so that it reads 0 then refit with straight wheels.  I bought a new one from ebay when i had problems, they are not expensive at around 20 euros  and are locked at 0 deg to avoid this problem.

So basically take the wheel off, offset the ring by -71.92, and fit the steering wheel back on like that with the wheels straight?

Before I actually do this, Will a value of +/- 1.5 degrees allow me to get past the point I have been stuck at? which is enabling the basic settings?

I greatly value your input guys but I would also like to understand why this has happened as I made sure all throughout the process that the steering wheel and front wheels were perfectly straight. To my limited knowledge, you are basically asking me to purposely offset the steering wheel during a normal slip ring replacement process,  right?

  • Author

How can I check this then?

If I take the steering wheel off, the slip ring is perfectly straight as there is only one way it will click in.

  • Author

That is exactly how I installed it already. Wheels straight and everything :(

Is it safe to reconnect the battery without connecting the steering wheel and airbag back together in order to check the values the steering angle sensor is reading?

  • Author

I just managed to set the steering angle sensor to 0* by stoping the car with wheel turned to 70*... However upon doing the steering limit adaptation...I lost my power steering.... :(( This is so frustrating.

  • Author

I have checked the part number. It is perfectly identical. :(

Why have I lost power steering?

If the steering angle sensor is OK when the wheel is obviously so far out, I think it's a fair bet to say there is a problem with the slipring. I;d source another and try that. (remember there are type 1 and type 2 sliprings, look on the Ross tech steering column controller website to match up the version of your slipring with the actual controller you have).

The Slip ring has small tabs on the back that pass through the sensor that is how it can read the position.

Variation between slip rings is probably what pins are used and if it is used for a dual igniter airbag

Okay, now that makes sense. I have been looking into this but I can't find anything onthe internet about 2 different types. However, I plan on removing the back plastic from the old slip ring and putting it on the new one that is now (I suppose) different....

Will give it a shot then if that fails, I will head down to Skoda and have them do everything....:(

So this seems to be a Golf5 slip ring (the kind I installed on my Octavia I suppose). Weird enough part numbers are the same.

And this is what the slip ring I used to have looks like:

$_57.JPG?set_id=880000500F

Obviously the plastic bits on the Golf seem to be smaller and more numerous. This could explain why my steering angle sensor goes bananas...... I will try to replace those plastic bits and see if this is the case.

does the slip ring you have a black front with a small clear window?

or is it all clear plastic?

  • Author

Its all clear plastic - both the original and the one that's on the car now.
