Instant chat facility on car dealers' websites

Featured Replies

Does anyone else find the popups for instant chat facility on car dealers' websites intrusive and irritating. Out of interest i tried a couple today and they are a complete waste of time. The person you are connected with is not a salesperson and has no ability to negotiate. It's just a way to get your contact details so it's quicker just to make a phone call and speak to someone in sales. Pointless intrusion when browsing

I never see them; if you use an browser with something like uBlock installed you'll find the vast majority of pages are much more pleasant to look at, and you don't get floating pop-us and other irritations.

I find making a phone call to someone in Sales can also be a waste of time

Been looking for a new used car lately and get loads on Autotrader. I know the names of all the sale staff at Sparshatts, Botley but none on the names in the chat boxes are the same as the sales staff. Sparshatts have a 'media' team as I found out when I kicked up a stink about them on Twitter and Facebook last year. SUK got wind of it via Twitter and kicked their arses :D

Double edged sword?

When I was looking to buy car insurance from a company that accepted DTUK pedal box I read somewhere here that LV did indeed cover that add-on. While on the site I used the Chat option regarding the Pedal box and LV confirmed that it would come under 'Interior Mod' I forget the actual cost right now but it just a few quid to add cover for it. I then was able to print out the conversation so in case of later problems I had proof that I had a pedal box covered and not a pair of flufffy dice hanging off the mirror.

Also, when going through pages of forms to fill in you invariably come across a question your not sure of as the question is confusing or badly worded, again using the chat option can clear up the problem faster than you can phone and actually get to speak to a human being! Again print it out so you have a hard copy of the conversation.

Or, if too intrusive or annoying it takes 2 seconds to close the popup with the X.

It's just a service. They say 'chat' but it's just a call centre that pases on your contact details.

It does work, I've had call backs but it's not what it is advertised as.

They definitely come in good and bad formats. The different names thing, I get that... we used to print marketing materials, I know crazy days, print half a tree, guy leaves. So we moved to printing them with a 'alias', the alias was never in, but someone else fielded the enquiry. Saved at least one tree I hope.

I believe we're the best salespeople... the collective here know far more and we'll dig to find it out too.

I went to a ford place, test drove a 1.6tdi thing, thought it felt a bit to good... was a 2.0, sales guy swore blind it was a 1.6 so I showed him the chassis stamp/card thing... he still tried to tell me it was a 1.6. We didn't go back inside. We did end up with a 1.6 though and it is gutless, till it's rolling over 50.

I was hoping to negotiate via the online chat, preferably without leaving my contact details to avoid the inevitable, transparent, predictable  sales patter and endless subsequent harassment calls you get with some salespeople. Why would I need to arrange a telephone conversation via a third party? I may as well make a call myself

If you want a low price with little hassle buy through a broker like carwow or broadspeed.
