Petrol leaks 280ps

Featured Replies

Just curious is it only the 280 that suffers this problem? Are other TSi OK?

Does the 280 have a higher pressure fuel pump or something?

Yes, this is the purge valve.  I can only assume that the valve was sticking, such that the canister wasn't being purged.  The result, I imagine, was the canister becoming saturated in fuel, when then

As previously mentioned earlier in this thread my 280 L&K went into an independent for a possible fuel leak investigation on 1st June. They have advised to replace the fuel evap canister but guess

I have not witnessed this happening with any other model in the Skoda range or on any other car from my searching.
Not sure if anyone else can confirm.
Failing carbon canisters yes, but petrol pouring out of the fuel cap, no.
Since having the carbon canister and the evap valve replaced (with a new battery) I've seen had no other issues and the car has never ran sweeter since I purchased it in February.

Mines coming up on 5 years old but ive not had this. Lucky or a matter of time ?

Well it looks like it was just a matter of time !  Not seen any fuel outside the car but over past week noticed a very strong smell when I had stopped. No smell in cabin.

I have a 6th year warranty supplied by Skoda does anyone know if this will be covered ?

wouldn’t have though it would be classed as a consumable ?

Hi Nick,

Knowing how some of these warranties work, you may be told it's not covered. but it's still worth a claim. Skoda are quite good if you have done all your services with them.

I bought mine from a Kia Dealership so they said it wasn't covered. It's not that expensive to sort out anyway but it's the principle.

One replacement Carbon Canister (fixed fuel issue) and an Evap Valve (got rid of engine management light) and it's all good.

Cheers I'm nearly empty and not had the fuel smell for the last couple of days.... I intended to just keep putting a few quids worth in I don't want to risk it going up in smoke :D I've mailed my local to get it booked in will update as the situation progresses.

Maybe......I had a petrol smell on my 280, dealer had back seat out looking for leaks~no joy.  I noticed the rubber seal around the filter neck was stopping the cap from seating properly even though it was locking into place fine.  Pushed it back into place and no more smell. 🤞( 2+ yrs ago)

Interesting I'll check that !

Yeah that looks OK :-( I'll fill it up on the way home I guess that will answer the question one way or the other !

So this afternoons update .... I've put 25 quid in and tank is around a third full. No petrol smell. I'll put another 25 quid in tomorrow and see what happens.

Good job really as I've not heard a peep from the dealer ! How much did I pay for that extended warranty ?  Looks like exploding into little pieces is low on the urgent job scale !

There always seems to be a ‘get out of paying’ clause.

To be fair my guys have never let me down i'll put 25 quid in each day and see what happens .... Could have been something with the filler that having a fiddle sorted ..

Well another 25 quid and still no smell…. I’m about to write this one off as a temp problem ….

I've noticed my 2019 1.5Tsi had a petrol smell over the warmer days, gone now the temp has dropped

I went through some very warm days and did not have it back i'll keep a nose on it ....

Over the last month or so during the warmer weather, my 66plate 280 did smell of petrol (expensive petrol at that...) After I stopped. Really strong on the warmest days, a bit on a day like today at around 25deg. Don't get it when it's cooler.

Not seen any leaks and I have opened the filler too to check and no gushing of petrol.

Will monitor and see how it goes. Worse case I guess at 200quid, it might be fixed.

With this mad heat in the UK, I'm sure there will be lots of this happening.
One thing I've learnt, don't overfill the tank. Once it clicks when full, stop.
I've learnt my lesson.
Haven't had any issues at all since getting those two components replaced on my Superb III 280.

All the best guys.

Just tried to put my ‘spare’ 5 litre can of fuel in my 280 - something very strange about the filler pipe - using the standard plastic green container and nozzle the fuel just fills up the neck and spills out!

And no, the tank is not full, it’s almost empty.

There's a flap in there to prevent misfuelling and I guess your nozzle doesn't insert far enough to open it like a normal pump nozzle does.

I suspect you’re right D402, however, thinking along the same lines I tried a 12”

length of 1/2” hose on a funnel, still didn’t work!

Be warned, don’t run out of fuel - getting an emergency supply in isn’t easy.

I think it's more complicated than that. Might be the anti-siphon device interfering? Or simply the hose isn't rigid enough

Just a guess...

So... I had a good look the other day around the filler cap and the cap itself as I thought maybe the cap is leaky. Cap looks fine, but I noticed there is a rubber seal around the filler neck that is not aligned properly.

I aligned that and after a few drives over a few days, I did not detect any smell anymore. However, tank is less than half full now so it could be that too.

Will filler up to more than half soon and see if it comes back.

The rubber seal around the filler neck isn’t air tight, it’s just an aesthetics thing as the entire filler neck is exposed under the car, wheel arch and such.

the only thing it might be, if the rubber was getting pinched on the end of the filler neck preventing the cap from sealing properly

The problem is caused by overfuelling, trying to squeeze the extra in after the pump clicks, something I do all the time but mine is diesel and doesn't seem to be affected.

The evaporative canister is intended to recieve fuel vapour, liquid fuel will block it.

Filling right to the top of the neck the fuel will just flow down to the canister, even just beneath that it will happen with heat expansion.

Once the canister is full of fuel the tank cannot vent other than through the canister pressure relief valve which is full of fuel.

The hot weather has made the problem worse and also shown up canisters that have already become clogged, I do not know why mine and other diesels have escaped the problem but it will be to do with the vaporising point of the fuel,  amongst the fuel cans in my garage its the petrol ones that swell up and sometimes leak in the heat, never the diesel.

I've started having this problem, seems to happen when I have the car at the gliding club and do a few very short journeys around the airfield or to the caravan, in hot weather. According to other sources and ERWIN, it is the charcoal evaporative canister (under wheel arch  near filler). There is a modified part available. So it looks like an evap canister change for me. I have just been on the phone to TPS for the part, at £45 including VAT that is not too bad. It is arriving tomorrow and doesn't look difficult to replace - FLW... Hopefully it will not need the G10 valve changing as well, but since I have no fault codes hopefully not.
