New battery fitted

Good evening gents just thought I'd tell you about my 64plate 19k miles mk2 needing a new battery. The stop/start has never hardly worked,twice the battery has died whilst trying to start it in the morning on me so I thought while it's still under manafactures warranty I'll put it in and they did all the tests and said it needed a new battery and don't worry it's all covered by warranty i thought lovely. They did say it showed up lots of power related faults on their machine and now they have cleared them all for me. but when I took the car in I told the bloke i do!! not!!! want!!! the  emissions!!!! recall fix done and he said fine no problem but please sign this form stating that, no problem i said and he even wrote it down on the job card and highlighted. Well having my car back it just doesn't seem right power wise, it's a 170 bhp cr diesel so what I'm trying to say is would they have done the recall behind my back ? Is there a way of knowing that if they done it or not ?.....

Search the forum for more info - there should be a sticker somewhere in the boot.

As jafo indicated, they place the sticker in the spare wheel well in the trunk. Previous posts here said the fix is indicated by "23R6" on it.

And mine too - at 11 months old and 5000 miles, done under warranty.

 

Car spent too much time in the showroom with its doors open and the battery being deeply discharged (car was owned by Skoda Ireland, did a tour of Irish dealers to show off the newly face lifted estate - then I met it at its final dealer).

Get a VCDS autoscan showing the SW version for the ECU, that'll confirm if you've had the emissions fix done.

 

You might be able to get the same info from OBDeleven but it's not something I've used.

Thank you gents for the info I can vaguely remember someone said they put a sticker somewhere. And as for the battery the bloke said they have gel in them these days for the stop start cars and if left for a long period they will just die. I didn't mention to him tho that the dealership where i bought it from serviced the car in the January and I bought it in the may so it has been left standing around for a while. Once again thank you all. now tomorrow I'll be looking in the boot for that sticker

Aww gutted for you but was it stills under 3 years old your car ? And did you buy a replacement from them or a normal parts shop because they are very expensive even from a part shop

Must get a battery for mine too, 5 years 11 months and 150000km at the moment I'm driving around with a booster pack in the boot. BTW the emission "fix" made no difference to power output on my 170.

23R6 is that what's on the label / sticker

Then, if you have on paper that you refused to do it - interesting if you can force them to reverse it ??

Under good circumstances batteries last around five years or more. The SII Superb is known to be unusually hard on batteries and many here say they last no more than two years. The bloke, like almost everyone does, mistook the AGM battery for a gel cell battery. They're not the same thing. Modern vehicles have lots of battery draining electronics and even drain the battery slowly while they're parked and locked. Depending on the battery and how much the specific car drains, it may not be able to start after a month of sitting. Some of these vehicles are classified as Micro-Hybrids and avoid using the alternator whenever they can, instead relying on the battery, unless the charge is running low. This means you may park the car with a half-empty battery. Self-discharge and electronics like the alarm drain the battery even more.

 

Batteries with low or no charge in them deteriorate quickly. If you use your vehicle daily, this shouldn't be an issue if you don't do very short drives.

Mine was 2 years old , a varta battery allegedly a good make ( I had a varta battery go on my new  vivaro after 6 months ).

Mine had gone flat several times at about two years old, why it waited I do not know. This was down to the fan on the Columbus unit and the unit itself not shutting down and continuing to draw current when they should have shut down. Pulling fuse H/F/or G8 (not sure which now) clearly showed what was happening. The VW Recovery men knew exactly what was wrong and wrote their reports which is what got me the new battery and a software update. My dealer was very good about it all but were ham strung by Skoda UK insisting on jumping through hoops despite the breakdown reports.

Is there any way to disable the stop/start feature permanently (rather than having disable it manually every time you start the car)?

 

I left it switched on during a drive into town the other day and it clocked up over 20 stop/starts on a 40 minute journey. Many were less than 10 seconds apart when I had to nudge forward in slow moving traffic. That can't be good for anything let alone the battery.

Or press brake very gently.

VAG should set bigger threshold - about half way not just a tiny bit :(

 

I turn it off when engine is still cold or very hot - and always on longer trips.

You're right that it is hardly a great inconvenience, just a shame it does not work a little better.

Now that really, really is terrible given you signed their "absolutely don't do it" paperwork. And of course the will not be able to "reverse" it, will they.... You have to report this to SUK (for all the good it'll do). It really makes me want to stay away from franchise dealers altogether now, but given they now match specialists for larger work (cambelt/waterpump) and give a warranty on the work its a difficult decision.

My 2010 was to a Skoda dealer for the first time a few weeks ago and I wont be going back, their customer service or lack of it was atrocious. Some complaining gave me 15% of the cambelt change but they can stick their battery LOL
