My latest mod - airbags visible

Featured Replies

Distracted, did not notice the traffic in front of me had stopped.

Smashed at city speeds into the car in front of me without even braking, but... 3 airbags went off (even though I was alone in car...) - steering wheel, driver legs and passenger.

Nothing seemed to bend - all gaps looked fine, car could drive fine, bumper is obviously gone...

Anyone knows about Finland rules if they repair? I have full coverage...

Cop said that when airbags go off, car is a goner, but this is a car still under warranty, not even 2 years old, with only 60tkm.

Ah, windshield cracked when passenger airbag went off, but that is the least of worries.

I am bummed if they want to kill the car, cause it was a relatively minor shunt and bumper seems to have taken most of the hit.

Adding to it, does anyone know the rough cost of such a repair?

I am guessing:

- new dash

- 3 airbags that went off (guess that includes new steering wheel)

- new seatbelt and/or tensioner

- new windshield

- new front bumper

- new collision sensors for front

The steering wheel airbag is separate to the steering wheel so can be changed on its own, it will probably need a new airbag controller as well (and the new one re-coding)

many cars are written off with minimal damage once the airbags go off unfortunately.

Don't I spy the front radar / collision detection "hole" in the lower radiator grill?

I'm not in Finland but here in Estonia we have copied a lot of regulations from you and Sweden so I'm guessing the verdict would be similar to what would happen here. I don't think the car is going to be written off with this kind of damage (if there are no structural damages to the body behind the bumper that are not visible from your images). Airbags rely on "better safe than sorry" logic and open quite easily if your deceleration was higher than the threshold programmed in the controller. The cost of repairs should be a lot less than the pre-crash value of your car.

Pleased you safe and well after the collision Jaco,

That is the most important thing - no injuries to anyone.

Bit shaken up, obviously - not everyday you get to peel off an airbag from your face.

Been driving for 25 years and never once had anything - not even a small crash, but I guess things happen...

Hope I get to keep this car, cause I really liked it.

...guess one possible outcome is karma punishing me for hating the facelift and now forcing me to go out and get one ;)

Glad you and everyone else are ok.

The facelift looks like it's been crashed already so that will save you a job. :)

Think pistonsbroke needs that appointment, he can't see the beauty in the face lift FFS its a stunner

You'll need new seatbelts too as no doubt the pre-tensioners have activated?

Does front assist not work over a certain speed, why didn't it work properly?

Actually I think Jaco has been caught with one of those blow up thingies and he's trying to wiggle out of it.

Maybe they should put a smiley face on it - at least when you see the airbag it would lighten the mood a bit :)

Maybe something like this:

:crying:

City Braking part of FA only works up to 19mph/30kph.

Above this speed audio/visual warning in Maxidot and 100% braking force applied as soon as you touch the brake pedal; the theory is if you react too late, you scrub as much speed as possible, thus reducing impact speed vs a car without it fitted.

A work colleague has a 2016 Audi A4 Ultra which is fitted with something called 'pre-sense'. I wonder if this is similar to Skoda's system?

He tells me that he has had a few issues with it randomly flashing up warnings when there was nothing there, until last week when it performed a full on emergency stop without warning. He did mention that when he felt the initial braking sensation his instinct was to also brake but ultimately the car initiated the braking and finished the braking to a complete stop too.

It's really knocked his confidence in the car. He refused to drive it to the dealer so they came and picked it up, had it for two weeks and handed it back telling him that they dialled down the sensitivity, reset everything and told him to let them know if it did it again!

Listening to this tale another guy said he was travelling in lane 3 of the motorway in heavy rain in his VW Golf, a car on the opposite carriageway hit a big puddle sending a tidal wave over the central reservation onto the front of his car, which then proceeded to perform a full on emergency stop, in lane 3 in poor visibility!

I'm all for technology but it seems pre-sense has some way to go yet.

Neural networks and the advances in AI will take care of that - when we have an AI that can not only analyze that there is an object there, but also which object it is, what is the situation, etc. THEN these systems will work.

For now, yeah, they are literally a bit hit and miss.

Front Assist / ACC only detects moving objects. If the cars in front of you were completely stopped that could be the reason for the lack of reaction from Front Assist. If you drove behind a car, and that car stopped, Front Assist would react on that. At least, that´s how I was told it works.

The best anti collision system comes as standard on every car ever sold, it's called 'The Alert Driver.' The problem is, the alert driver tends to be distracted by mobile phones, too many road signs, sat nav, noisy passengers and reliance on a dumb box of electronics.

Not nice to see this @Jaco2k but hopefully you will be back on the road soon B)

Hope to be back on the same car ;)

Car is already being repaired and will, hopefully, return in it's former glory...

...but now something fun:

Service indicator was on before the accident, so I thought they could do the service for me when the car was already there - they asked me (wait for it...) 500€(!!!) for oil change, cabin filter change and spark plug change :):):)

...car has 60000km, can anyone confirm what is the average price for this service?

I think I am going to shop around to have the service done elsewhere - that is the best dealer in town, where the car is now, but these prices are a bit... Too much.
