Sports exhaust on VRS230 and FL 245

Featured Replies

I'm really close to ordering a VRS 245, but I notice the 245 has a "sports exhaust" as I believe the pre FL 230 does too. I guess I'm asking pre FL 230 owners is this significantly noisier than the standard VRS exhaust? I'm hoping I can extrapolate from that what the 245 will be like. Whilst I don't mind a rorty note under hard acceleration one of the the things I really like about my current Mk2 VRS is its ability to travel at "continental" motorway speeds with a minimum of drama. I don't want a car that's going to drone along like a "tuned" Corsa with a 4" exhaust on the motorway. I'm sure my worries are unfounded but I am for the first time ever thinking of ordering a car I can't yet see and test drive at the dealers.

never heard my exhaust ever to be honest, whisper quiet on a motorway at speed too :)

Pretty much quiet unless you floor it. Its not noisy at all.

Listen on YouTube.

I've got a 230 and only ever hear the exhaust under hard acceleration. I've been considering changing it to a scorpion so it's a little more vocal, but I've been told by a few friends that it sounds nice from the outside.

Never get any drone etc if that helps.

You'll be laughing that much from suprising the Audi/BMW/Seat boys you won't hear the exhaust

Having heard both PFL 220 and 230 side by side both at idle and full chat, I'd say there is a slight - but noticeable - difference. Touch more burble at idle and a bit louder when gunning.

Similarly, got a manual 2016 230 - can only really hear it on start-up, and hard acceleration next to shop fronts in town... (whilst also looking in the windows as I drive past to see what the spec. ed. Xtremes look like in motion.

I must look weird.

Edit: Got a full Scorpion turbo-back system in the works for mid-July, so will post before and afters.

RS 230 is so quiet it needs this small actuator under the wipers to hear engine when driving sharp. In comfort mode really nothing to worry about, in the cabin is quiet as an electromobile.

Owners actually face challenge how to make it louder. On idle it has nice deep sound, but when driving it is really quiet.

Ok I'm in!

The exhaust does assist/reduce the price of stage 2 tuning too

Please explain more. A replacement downpipe as a minimum would be required for stage 2 which could be mated to the existing cat back but this would be true with both variants. How does this reduce price?

What gives the 230 the crackle and pops on upshift in the exhaust, compared to the 220?

The exhaust system is different. Think DSG does that when shifting gears on throttle.

Update: The system has been on for 2 weeks. I went for non-resonated... aaand it's too loud. No ifs, no buts. I'm getting the centre silencer fitted in early September ;)

BUT (ok - 1 x 'but' allowed), it does sound hoonerific. Crackles on overrun when cold, burbles loudly when hot. The resonance in the car is bearable at low speed, but the silencer is definitely required for motorway journeys etc. I'm probably slowly getting tinnitus... but currently i don't care: a) because it's a great system which immediately improves the car's presence, and b ) because I know I'm getting it fixed in a few weeks, so I can withstand the noise. Now I've got the bigger downpipe, it'll be getting remapped (only to stage 1) once the silencer is back on

One day I will follow up with a full project thread, but in reference to this thread - see how you get on with the new car. Scorpion's offering is brilliant, even just the cat-back is well worth it. A word of caution is that apparently the stock exhaust system is a right b*st*rd to get off; so unsure how it will react to 'chopping and changing' re: pressures etc.

Can you post a small video of the exhaust start up and revs with the Scorpion fitted ?

Should be able to - going down to vacuum the car in about an hour.

Will need to be 1 x cold start, and 1 x revs (in different locations - my neighbours get a bit tetchy if I go into 'full hoon' mode)...

The MkII TFSI had a proper burble. I thought it was blowing when I first bought it at 6 months old but obviously it wasn't and my wife always heard me arriving on the drive. In comparison my 220 is whisper quiet and she never hears me pull up outside the house. I can't imagine  the 230 or 245 are vastly different even with sports exhausts.

245 isnt loud at all, you can hear it under hard acceleration, quite deep noise, starting and idle slight noise, driving sedately quiet, so no its not noisy at all.

The Miltek Cat Back I had on my Mark II had a nice subtle burble - didn't drone on the Motorway.

Bloody EU regs... ;) - yeah, mine used to be quiet AF. Then loud AF, due to the non-resonation.

Now - and I said this to my other half whilst quite literally 'burbling' round town - it's perfect with the turbo-back Scorpion system (now resonated).  To be Shark Stage 1-ified on Saturday.

@colmsmyth - Headphones might be best on these. Apologies for darkness... I can't change Winter ;)

1 - Static, cold start-up.

2 - (in-car) Hill-run (legal speeds, so not full-on, with a few dodgy upshifts)

3 - (in-car) 1-2-3-4 burble.

Hope that helps.

Edit: All in 'Normal' driving mode, so no actuator.

Links don’t work for me unfortunately

Sounds awesome @Ads230 ... Not jealous at all!

I hear my 'standard' 230 exhaust quite a lot now, a hell of a lot more than when it was new which is odd as I thought exhausts were supposed to quieten with time. It definitely burbles on cold starts and is a lot more vocal than my mate's 220 :D

Now done almost 20k miles, wonder if the extra horses help out at all as well ... The upshift farts are pretty pronounced even with only slightly rapid acceleration, obviously not quite as much as your Scorpion!

Best of luck on Sat, hopefully the weather will stay ok for you. Make sure you get some free stickers / lanyards too!

Wish my 245 farted! Only 800 miles in though. Guess there's time!

Trust me, it will ... Mine started to get noisier after around 10k miles. It gives out little grunts when driving slightly faster than a pedestrian pace, and full on shouts at me when giving it the beans!
