Featured Replies

morning all,

need/want to change my gearbox oil, 6sp tdi. is it a security spline(if so what size) or 17mm hex?

It's an M16 anti tamper type.

It might not be. My last two cars with that box were 10mm allen keys iirc. Vrs 170 tdi and Seat leon fr tfsi. You can check as you can see the drain plug from the front underneath. Worth a quick look. Or try sticking your phone down the front of the box and take a pic if you can't see.

My 2.0 TDI had 10mm hex (or torx? Probably hex).

I actually bought a set of spline bits with the M16 anti tamper i thought i needed only to find it was a hex bit. Both boxes were the same. Havnt looked at my current gearbox.

hmm interesting, can you see the drain plug with under trays fitted?

As an aside, make sure you can open the fill plug before you undo the drain plug.

slightly off topic

going to do a quick oil and filter change whilst the undertrays are off ill be buying 504/507 spec but i have had some conflicting info from a few people some say stay with the 5/30 507 quantum longlife 3 as per the spec, someone else said 5/40 is better for engines with over 60k on them.

engine code CEGA

oil filter ordered- 120VG0240 ( see attached photo)

oil wise i was going with either:

castrol edge

quantum long life 3

shell helix

out of the 3 what would you guys choose

I would put it whatever is the cheapest 5/30 that meets the 507 spec which will probably be the quantum.

I never buy oils like Shell or Castrol as they seem to sell their oil in either awkward quantities or at a ridiculous price

You can get Quantum off ebay pretty cheap

If it still has a DPF stick with the recommended 5W30 507 00 oil. Offspec oils can have higher ash loadings which will kill your DPF in a hurry.

yeah normally stick to the spec but he raised an interesting point about slightly thicker oil protecting a worn engine better. but good point about the DPF

can anyone confirm the oil filter is the correct one for CEGA engine code, I think it is, but best to check before I take it out and find out it's wrong.

any luck on confirming the gearbox key types?

Apologies for the late reply. Just checked my fill plug and yet again it's a hex 10mm. That's the last 3 cars fitted with that box to have them so no spline anti tamper. Looking from the top it's clearly visible on mine it's just to the right of the starter motor. Underneath there is a gap in the undertray possibly might be big enough to see through that. Mine is a tfsi petrol.

Not sure regarding the tdi. I think the air intake is different on them so you might not be able to see from above.
