Prepping for intake manifold removal

Featured Replies

My newly-purchased 2012 VRS TSI generally seems in good nick, but I'm planning on replacing the intake manifold in the near future and doing a de-coke at the same time (it's got an intermittent p2015 fault, but no EML)

I've read a few different guides, but I just wanted to double check what tools are absolute must-haves for the job?

I've got torx head bits, triple squares, magnet-on-a-stick, inspection mirror, the usual sockets and spanners etc. Some of the guides refer to the special VW injector tool, but others don't?

Also, what chemicals are best to buy for the cleaning?

Thanks.

Have you seen my thread mate?  I've listed all the bits I needed. I found the usual favourite, Seafoam, to not do too good at removing the buildup.  Regular carb cleaner and suction pump faired much better.

Also, where abouts in the world are you?  You'll need the VW (or equivalent) tool to pull the injectors out and replace the seals on them. I have it and you're welcome to borrow it.

The reason you need it is because the seals are a one time use and you can guarantee that at least one injector will come out with the manifold and so will need replacing. For consistency (and well, you've got the IM off anyway) most replace all four anyway; they only cost £8 each so why not.

Let me know if you need any tips or help.  If you're in the NE I can lend a hand if needed.

EDIT: here's my thread. Not a how to as such, more of an overview of what went well, or didn't:

I found non-caustic based oven cleaner was really good.
