Water in doors?

Featured Replies

After rain and the car has dried, when I open either door, there is always some water on the cills.  Could it have come from inside the doors?  I can't see drain holes in the base of the doors.  I thought doors always had drain holes to let out the water that gets in at the bottom of the window?  Should I be worrying about this?

Thanks

Nope. So long as the water runs out when you open the doors, all is well.

My MkII did this a lot. 7 years from new, no corrosion issues.

You can get replacement rubber if you persuade the dealer. I can confirm it worked on mine doors.

@Stewart7 - If the water is on the sills and outside the seal rubbers, I don't really see the problem.

Might be a corrosion risk, could be an issue if it freezes and expands, you also get wet feet when you open the door...

Got my seals replaced under warranty with the updated version which has drainage holes - problem solved!

Same here. Car would drop a lot of water when opening the door, so got the replacement seals fitted under warranty.

All the info here.

My dealer simply would not change the door seals, but instead carried out the approved 'fix' of putting a couple of holes in them.

When I got my car back after the accident, it had some mod in the doors that I don't recall being there before - it looks like some part that pushes the rubber out of the way, allowing the water to drain.

Will try to make a photo and post.

As promised, here is the photo - please let me know if this part is in all cars and it was just me who did not notice it before :)

I noticed that on mine as well. I presume it is because the seals keep the water there until you open the door and it will get away down the front. I am not that worried about it, for now but i will keep an eye.

It looks like the water is gathering in the seal but it will go away once you open the doors.

It seems that what I am experiencing is water held between the sill and the bottom of the door.  Judging by the amount that comes out when the doors are opened, I thought it was coming from inside the doors.

A few minutes later...

I've just been and checked, I also have the plastic pieces fitted, as shown in Jaco2k's photo, which makes me think its more likely that water is getting inside the doors.

I think they all had the plastic widget and the change was actually the addition of drainage holes (may have been other changes to shape, but this was the noticeable one) as per the below from another Forumite:

Hi, my MY16 estate is now just 1 month out of warranty, yesterday both my passengers said that they could hear a strange sound coming from the left rear side, they said that it sounded like "brush or foliage dragging under the car" On getting out at our destination, the rear-left passenger said there was water coming out from under the door when she opened it - I climbed under the door while it was opened to find water trickling from the rear end of the lower, rubber, door seal - on gently pulling the seal slightly away from the door I was rather concerned to see at least 2-3 litres of water drain out from inside the door (L-H, rear) Has anyone else seen this quantity of water trapped in one of the rear doors of a Mk 111?

There do not appear to be any drain holes in the rubber door seals on this door.

Any advice gratefully received.

Just reading through Octavia forums for something else and noticed this thread. I had an issue with water coming into the car from the base of the front door of a Golf 7 so I figure may be related to this.  In case it helps it turned out to be a known issue with a loudspeaker seal.

Hi there.

Octavia 2013.

This is crazy....

Sloshing in my nearside passenger door. The door is full of water after rain. No sign of seal damage. Removed the plastic lug that supports the rubber seal below the door (see photo). No drain holes anywhere under the door. Considering drilling the door as the current 'drain hole' (not a drain hole) is above the lowest part of the door, so water still in there.

Anybody else have this - have a solution?

Cheers.

Had this on my 2015 estate, rear near side door sloshing. I took the seal at the bottom off, used a pair of pliers to pull all the plastic lugs out then thoroughly cleaned the seal with microfiber and cleaned and the same with the actual door.

Loads of muck came out and no issues since.

I assumed just a build up of muck from the roads given its the near side and most roads I travel on a rural.

Thanks, Steve.

I appreciate the advice. I will give this a go!

My 2016 does have drain holes in the doors. Near the fold over bottom seam.Careful prodding , with say  a wooden skewer, will clear any blockage. My Mk2 had wax blocking some.

Are drainage holes o the other side of the seal as well? Otherwise I dont see the point of the holes in the seals. I dont expect water to be coming from the seal, but from the door.

I just had the exact same problem today on my passenger rear door.  Heard sloshing, when I pulled the bottom seal slightly away from the door, several liters of water came out. I have the car for 7 years now and this has never happened, so I am puzzled. I am going to clean this first, then see if the problem persist.

Likewise, though had the car for 5 years. Drained the water out today by moving the seal away slightly and will see if it comes back. Doesn't look like the drain holes are blocked though, just that the seal sits over them tightly thereby blocking them. So not really sure what to clean!?

Just had this problem for the first time on passenger rear door, this door has a dodgy seal on the door as it's already popped out once and I've reseated it.

I emptied about a litre of water out yesterday after hearing it sloshing about.

Can anyone recommend a vendor for the "modified door seals" that I've seen mentioned on the forum?
