Mudflap Fitting (guide with pics)

Decided to fit the OE mudflaps today, pretty simple job and didn't take longer than 30-40 mins. Heres the lowdown.

 

If you follow this guide you do so at your own risk

 

 

Car is a Superb Estate Sportline 4x4, photos are from front passenger side and drivers rear.

 

Part numbers

Front - 3VO 075 111

Back - 3VO 075 101

Tools needed

Torx 25 bit and ratchet

Pliers

Electric drill (right angle if you have one)

7mm drill bit

 

The mudflaps come with all fittings required.

 

Front Mudflap fitting

I managed to fit them with the wheels still attached, a right angle drill would make it much easier.

 

1. Put wheels on full lock

2. Remove 2 x torx screws attaching wheel arch liner/wheel arch

3. Remove plastic plug (little plug in the middle of the photo) holding undertray to wheel arch liner (I used pliers for this)

4. Separate undertray from wheel arch liner and fit captive nut (from the fitting kit) where the plastic plug was.

5. Offer up mudflap and mark location of hole

6. Drill hole with 7mm drill bit

 

7. Offer up mudflap and hope the hole you drilled is in the right place.

8. Fit 3 x torx screws 2 (original) fit into the wheel arch/wheel arch liner and 1 (new from fitting kit) fits underneath into the new captive nut.

9. Fit plastic plug (from fitting kit) into your correctly located freshly drilled hole.

10. Job done now do the same again for the other side of the car.

 

Rear Mudflap fitting

The two sides are slightly different. I'll add comments where it differs.

 

1. Remove 2 x torx screws from wheel arch liner/wheel arch

2. Remove 2 x trox screws from sill and underneath the car (not required on passenger side)

3. Passenger side only, fit 2 x captive nuts (from the fitting kit) to sill and undertray

4. Offer up Mudflap, ensure that the hook at the top hooks inside the wheel arch

5. Insert 4 x tork screws, 2 original into wheel arch liner/wheel arch, 2 new (from fitting kit) into sill and underneath car arch liner.

6. Job done, now do the same again for the other side of the car.

 

Quite please with how they look, looking at the car normally you can hardly even notice them.

What are these mudflaps for, actually?

They keep small stones off the vehicle, they reduce a bit of mud on the vehicle, but else? Are there major advantages for Estate drivers, because the car is longer?

You've already answered your own question...

 

It might also help keep the rear of an estate cleaner but I doubt it would be significant.

Great guide but does anyone know how if the salon And estate mudguards are the same? Looking to get a set but can't an  after market set for the estate..

I got some really cheap aftermarket mud flaps from a well known auction site.

 

I couldn’t find them listed for the estate but I took a punt on them.

 

The good news is the quality seems good, time will tell. I fitted them by removing the original torx fittings and then refitting with the flap in place. They look OE and fit well. Fitted in minutes.
 

The seller was “hb- -moly”.

 

They cost less than £13, delivered to the UK from China which took a few weeks as stated.

Genuine ones are dirt cheap from SuperSkoda - I've had 3 cars worth from them with no issues.

Thanks very much for this guide, found it extremely helpful. Hooks on the rear ones were a bit tricky but I bent them a little open which solved it. Look great!

Thanks for the guide. It was a useful reference, although I did mine slightly differently, bolting the flaps in place before drilling the holes. This made sure the plug would fit in the right place.

Did my rears today, rain stopped play on the fronts. 

Thought I needed to take the front wheels off but after reading this,  I'll get my coat!

ah remember when mudflaps used to be almost a standard fitment?

I'm guessing there are 2 primary reasons for their demise:
1) bean counters
2) lowering the CD figure

Good tutorial, I used it as a reference today to fit both front and rears on mine.

I had to help myself with the jack to gain space, just sufficient to lift the body, without removing the wheels.

Right-angle for drilling was necessary.

I also used a 6mm bit instead of the 7mm in the instructions, to have the plastic "plug" fit tighter.

I recommend to press well the flap to the body to make it as flush as possible.

 

And by seeing all the crud that came out while wrestling with the wheel arch liner, I suggest taking them out and give a good clean behind them ...
