Dash instrument cluster backlighting not working

Featured Replies

Morning all

The wife's Octavia MK1 has developed a slightly odd fault - none of the backlighting for the Speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge or temp gauge work.

All the instrument warning lights function as normal, just none of the instrument backlighting - which makes driving through the local average speed cameras at night a bit worrying!,

I naively expected it to be a bulb, so took the dash off to find it was all LED!!

Bit stuck now - please can anyone make any suggestions what to try next?

Many thanks

Jim

@jimthediver - Have you checked the fuse? And the supply? It's most unlikely that all the LEDs failed at once.

Hi Ken, thanks for replying. Ive checked the obvious fuses and they were all fine. I'm not sure how to check the power supply, can you guide me on this?

Many thanks

Jim

@jimthediver - If you have to ask, look up Yell for an auto electrician near you!

:) Wise words Ken, I shall do that.

Many thanks

You haven't knocked the dimmer control down by mistake ??

@nige8021 - I can't speak for Jim, but the panel dimmer on mine is always at "full dim" (so as not to dazzle myself when driving in the dark).

My thoughts too, or the rheostat within has failed.

me too... following

Hi,

Any news on this issue? A friend of mine experiences it currently.  In addition, his central panel around the climate control and the side mirror switches remain dark.

The panel dimmer works properly, but there is no background illumination whatsoever. We tested the headlights switch and it works properly on my Octavia. Moreover, the issue persists on fellow's car when using my (working properly) headlights switch.

All relevant fuses seem to work properly.

Perhaps a cabling or connectors issue?

Any help would be appreciated!

When you say climate control... is that A/C or just a heater with knobs?

There is a bulb in the "regular" heater, behind the fan speed dial (middle? Iirc) put the dial to number 2 (12o clock) and pull the knob straight out. Theres a little teeny tiny push in capless bulb in there.

As for the instrument... it could be dry solder joints on the main circuit board. This can also cause instrument failure.... there was a guide on "reflowing" the instrument cluster, i think it involved an oven and some prayers :D

its from about 6/7yrs ago by now. Try a search for it ;)
