Do you have cable in your area??

My mate at work just got a really good deal on 2mb AOL.

I have Wanadoo for broadband,

Presently with Tiscali 2mb Unlimited for #17.99 per month

No complaints

Other than why does the pound symbol not work #######

I live in Manchester so I assume there is cable in this area, although I don

I'm with BT, I pay £29, for 2mb and 20GB downloads. This is a bit on the pricey side, but I did get a free wireless router... which swung it for me  Can't fault the speed and I definately have less problems than I did with AOL 2mb...

As for download limits, I believe bt have no way on controlling how much you can download. My brother in-law has the 1gb limit but downloads 20gb+ every month  . In the small print it says bt may contact you if you persistantly go over your limit... but his heard zip, so that's something to bear in mind!

Currently with Plusnet. Not great if you're big on downloading, but excellent value for money if you're not :D

Very high chance windows is in UK mode where you are using a US keyboard, I have this a lot when remoting customer servers. Should be able to find it in regional options in your control panel :)

Telewest definitely has a decent reputation for their broadband services :)

Decide whether a download limit is an issue or not. Also really fast connection only makes a huge difference if you want streaming video and the like. Research reliability and customer service.

I stick with Demon unlimited 2Mb. Pretty reliable, not too expensive but accounts service is CRAP:(

My mate is very happy with plusnet.

With Bt for 17.99 supposed to be 2 meg but on at 1.1meg as this is most line will support and even at this speed it does keep dropping with ppp errors, If you live too far from exchange then this will be the same for all ISP's over a BT line, so if thats the case best is probably cable, but here in the sticks we ain't got that either. (should be gratefull for an indoor bog I suppose)

www.plus.net - cheap and pretty good, my parents provider

www.zen.co.uk - not cheap, but excellent, my current provider

Starts from £14.99

I would avoid AOL like the plague, due to nasty things they do with requiring their AOL browser to keep the connection alive or having to phone them up and use a very limited range of routers.

I'd agree with that.

Personally I'm with the little known www.freenetname.co.uk and they offer an excellent service. When I was in Bicester I got a very fast line speed - nearing the promissed 2mb. However now I'm in tamworth it is noticably slower, possible due to the line quality.

I was with them for dial-up for 4 years and have had their broadband for nearly a year. No complaints at all.

I'm with wanadoo as well, use over my 2gb limit each month and heard nothing, currently @ 2.2mb connection but upgrades to 8mb free when the area goes live, never had a problem with it al all!

Have a look here,http://www.dslguide.org/

You can do a side by side comparison on the various ISP's out there and make up your own mind

I've been with BT broadband for 18 months now, and no problems. I think its 2 meg but I'll have to check later when I'm at home.

Main reason for me choosing it was because I was on their 15.99 a month dial up package, and they offered me an upgrade to ther 512 broadband for the same price for 4 months - then it was going to be 21.99 i think thereafter, or 256 broadband at the same price.

Anyway they extended my trail period as they started to upgrade to to 1 and 2 meg broadband, and my area (Ramsbottom, North Bury) must have been one of the last to be upgraded, so i ended up staying at 15.99 for the full 12 months of my initial contract.

Its stayed at that ever since - not sure why and not going to ask as it seems a good deal. Don't know if I have a download limit but I've never been charged more or warned about excessive usage.

Bottom line is it has been a relaible service - hardly ever had connection problems, and support was there when needed. I'm no IT expert either, but the installation must have been very straightforward as I managed it myself!

Edit: Elanore - Your siggie as been at 1 week to go for a while - are you not counting down in days yet? Hope Horners Bury don't let you down - my car came from there and the delivery was pretty much ontime IIRC.

Thanks andy2407, I

I have been with Tiscali for 4 years and have never had any issues at all , and that includes moving house, upgrading from 56K to 512K and then upgrading to 1 meg. however I have read some horror stories as well, but I guess that can apply to most of the big providers. Currently I pay £14.99 for their unlimited download 1 meg link, unfortunately my line will not take 2 meg (yet), and considering my remote location I am very happy with their service.

That looks interesting, although don

None taken,

Each to thier own

I chose Plusnet and am happy (2 meg). Aside from recommendation, my thinking was that I could pay a small amount extra so to terminate at one onth's notice - i.e. I wouldn't be saddled with a one-year contract if the service was not good - either generally, or as regards my line in my area.

Not the cheapest, Plusnet, but not the dearest either.
