Oil Specs For Diesel Engine

Just about to service my SDI wondering if there is any specific oil needed, went on the shell website they suggest 10w30 but do you guys know anything different?

That's just the weight there is more to it than that. I think there is what they call an additives pack that is needed to meet the VW spec.

 

If it's a PD engine then it'll probably need 505.01 or 507. I think that is true of PD engines and it may be different for engines with common rail and or a DPF.

 

Someone who knows more will likely explain!

Nope, the spec. is what matters, not the brand. As long as the spec. is printed on the label you're good to go.

 

"Volkswagen AG requires that motor oil lubricants for SDI engines must only meet VW 505.00, 505.01, 506.00, 506.01, or 507.00 officially approved standards."

 

It's a PD engine without a turbo.

where do you find the code, ive been on the euro parts site and put my reg in to find my car, would that mean those oils match the codes?

ECP look-up is hopeless.

I would normally say a 5W-30 or 5W-40 viscosity oil that conforms to VW 507 or 505.01. You have to use that in an PD engine or you suffer from camshaft wear due to high pressures between camshaft and injectors.  However I've read the SDI engine is not a PD and uses a mechanically driven fuel pump to pressurise the fuel, not the camshaft, so oil spec isn't so important. If you put details in Opie oils it suggests normal 10W-40 or even 15W-40.

You may be right, the 2.0 SDI is definitely a PD engine with no turbo, this is getting to be like archaeology these engines are so old now.

However you won't do any harm using PD spec. oil on a non-PD engine, whereas you definitely will if you do it the other way around.

Therefore for an old 1.9 SDI you can pretty much use anything safely.

If it's an old one- you might like to look at a gold container in Asda , marked as 505.01 spec.

...Or the Petronas stuff is quite good, low ash etc too. 5000 version for VW's.

1.9 sdi = 10w40 or 5w40 505.00

2.0 sdi = 5w40 505.01 

 

Fabia mk1 so will be 1.9 sdi so as above.

OP was asking about SDI

But yes correct. 

I was just talking minimum specs

SOMEWHERE in the small print on the container, it'll state "conforms to  " and then there's a list of makers, followed by the maker's spec, which is listed in the USER MANUAL. Simple o the trouble of really-  VAG wouldn't go the trouble of specifying an oil if there wasn't a need for it. :blink:

AND, as I've seen mentioned by blokes in the trade - drain sump, before removing the filter, From Haynes, the filter is inverted on the engine.

I use car parts4less for my bits. Everything is specced, but might ( as I haven't seen it mentioned before)   suggest that for £2-3 you discard old sump plug and fit a new one, and as also mentioned elsewhere - check the torque on the plug. BTW- UNUSUAL ON A Skoda- the sump plug ( if it's same as 1.4) if a hex NUT- not a star.

Oh yeah thought this was about the tdi. Never heard of the 2.0 sdi which is why i assumed it was the tdi

 

Came in likes of the caddy c20 and some octavias.

First thing I do on owning a car. Simple, and it's worked for 50+ years of motoring. READ the user manual. Not Taught on the driving school course, but it MIGHT teach new users HOw THINGS WORK. Not really rocket school science. But HOW easy.
