How did the Octavia compare to the Superb? Curious as I could see myself moving to a Superb in the future when decent used ones come down a bit :)

i was going to do a compare but not had chance..

In short..

Octy estate felt a lot smaller in the cabin.

Road tyre noise on the vrs was really loud and off putting sounding like the car lacked sound proofing... Even simple things like hearing grit in the wheel arches been flicked up...

Doors felt lighter and didnt like how you can see the external paint on the door pillers.

Front seats even vrs didnt feel as nice as the ones the my superb se business, width wise

The cars drove very similar , though the 2.0tdi vrs with only 1000miles on it felt right maybe due to new and dsg didnt feel any quicker than my 2.0tdi 150 mid range.

I found the colour maxi dot a lot slower than the non colour version.

Dont get me wrong, its a nice car but i didnt get the wow factor like I did 2 years ago when I test drove one for 800 miles.

I also own a rapid space back se sport, so can tell the premium element over that with the Octy but just below the superb in terms of refinement... Its placed perfect in the line up of the range .

One thing I didnt like was the windscreen.. It was far too reflective from the inside when driving.. Maybe because it was so new and I have not cleaned mine inside for months !

Good insights, thanks for sharing! Road noise is one of the biggest bug bears with the VRS, I spend most of my time on a motorway. You get used to it I guess and having Canton helps drown it out with music!

I use Eco on mine all the time, mind you it’s a diesel DSG so it has the coasting mode and I find the box changes up exactly in line with how I’d change up a manual. I don’t find the throttle mushy at all, then again, my former daily was a Volvo V50 DRIVe so even in Eco, the vRS feels much more sprightly. I am not a fan of the Sport mode on the gearbox, holds onto the gears far too long. The Sport mode on my AMG Mercedes is much better suited to the car. I have hustled it down a decent backroad in Sport and changed in manual mode which is much, much better. Funny as I never use the paddle shifters in my Mercedes, but I do use them in the Skoda.

I use ECO mode 90% of the time with my TDI DSG.

Its smooth, restrains me from getting too lairy with the throttle and potentially allows me to save some fuel.

Sport mode in DSG 24/7 would be ridiculous, far too jerky and noisy. Would be a nightmare to drive around town.

I can understand a manual in sport or eco mode would be a different experience.

Paddle shifters all the time for me in my Petrol VRS. Leave it in sport mode and switch the gearbox back to D mode rather than S mode if I'm ever stuck in traffic and don't want to paddle shift.

Used eco mode when i first got my 245 and found it too boring.

Now have it set in individual mode with drive mode set as sport and everything else pretty much set as normal.

Knock the dsg box into D as opposed to S for the lower gear changes and ive got a quick responding car that doesn't hold on to its revs. Must admit i love pulling off from the lights in manual mode and quickly shifting up the gears.

My 245 will be in eco most days going to work and back. I've always loved driving cars fast and still do, but I also like efficiency and (being a bit sad really) am looking forward to seeing what mpg I can achieve. I managed 40mpg over 300 miles in my Focus ST (2.5 5cyl). Only once though!

I started out like that, then realised it doesn't actually make much difference.

You like efficiency but you have a focus ST and now have a 245? Makes sense

I said I like driving fast as well as some efficiency when plodding to work and back. Not exactly 6L V8s are they...

I'm still up for the challenge!

i dont see the point in slapping it down, a vRS is what it is. I get 45 mpg solid and im faster than 95% of anything i meet on my trip back and forward to work.

Have to admit I tried eco a bit when I first got it and found the same. Didn’t seem to make much difference to me either. Much of the time I found eco worse.

With the clutch engaged the engine has an overrun fuel cut off. When eco effectively presses the clutch the engine has to be fed fuel to keep it idling.

If it is downhill enough to freewheel you would probably use less fuel in another mode and your foot off the throttle. The DSG tends to change up to a high gear which helps in that situation.

I also found it wasn’t that tidy re-engaging the clutch either, felt it a bit unnecessary hammer on the clutch packs.

I think you can do more for economy with your right foot than any mode especially with the DSG.

I am an 'eco' user...

Not hugely for the economy setting but just as it's a more pleasant and relaxed ride for longer journeys and passengers.

My previous 2014 TDI VRS lived in sport mode but to be honest, the big difference in performance between the old diesel and the 245 means 'eco' feels like sport mode in the old diesel! Well not quite but you certainly have more than enough power for overtaking etc.

flicked it onto ECO mode when it had 20 miles to empty !!   i got there.... and the miles to empty increased to 30 miles too - winner winner...

So it is refilling in Eco mode? ;)

Simply clever.

Haha... No... The dealer had wrote 30 miles to empty  on the documentation for when I picked up the car... So to save any hassle eco driving enabled to lift the mpg which in turns increases the miles to empty as its basef on the last 50 miles driven mpg avg.

Personally I would perfer the option of litres in tank left enabled :)

I've gotten your point the first time, just kidding. :D
