Rear footwell lights retrofit?

Featured Replies

I would like to add rear footwell lights to a 2017 MY17 SE and can only find guides/info mostly relating to the Octavia and Golf etc. There seems to be a huge variation in VCDS coding too with conflicting info. A lot of these models don’t already have adjustable front footwell lighting so I don’t want to play around with VCDS.

Has anyone successfully added them?

Surprised that this is a rare retrofit… or maybe it’s so simple that nobody asks :D

I can’t seem to find a guide where someone adds rear lights only. I have found a retrofit loom, but had no response from the company for further info. I’m not sure, but it looks like it just splits the existing front light plug into two… is this what I need to do? The description also says “Not suitable for vehicles with factory fitted lighting package” but I’m guessing this is for LED ambient lighting and not standard (halogen) front footwell lights:

The lights I bought came with a little series loom, but it appears the footwell lights are wired in parallel so I will need to rewire them anyway:

Is there somewhere I can plug directly into or should I be splitting the existing front plug/connector into two?

To complicate things further, the kit they do with the lights mentions “After fitting the vehicle needs to be coded” but no mention of this with just the loom?

Maybe this is to code out the error detection so you can use LED bulbs?

An update for the hundreds of owners interested in this :D

I got no reply from carsystems.pl so I ordered the following and made my own cables:

A plug and socket at one end for the existing front light and a plug for the new rear light… just a basic splitter. No errors or coding needed and the following bulbs provide a nice cool white light:

Going to add rear door warning lights next so I hope the SE is the same as the Sportline:

Dear Alan_P,

Thanks for your monologue, it has been quite useful! I was wondering how to do this as well (along with other small upgrades on the cheap) and I'm bookmarking your post. I'm sure it will be of use to others too.

Cheers!

It's basically just a splitter using the front footwell light power connector... very straightforward. The rear door lights were also easy to do and are still working perfectly too thanks to @przemoka and @MartiniB

Thanks! How did you route the wires to the seats? I was looking at it and tucking them under the central console seems easy enough. Do you know what bulbs are used in the footwell lights? Maybe it's easy to use and LED replacement?

Cheers

There was a channel and loom going from below the seat base to the sill and there wasn’t one from the centre console so I used the existing route.

The harness and lights I bought (link above) used W5W fitment and there are loads of conventional or LED bulb options. Just search for “W5W LED” but some larger designs like the Safego T10 may not fit a standard unit properly.

I went for conventional bulbs (link above) to mitigate any errors and they turned out to be considerably whiter than standard.

But that means disassembling the sill trim and carpets, right? I was considering just tucking the wires under either the sill trim or center console trim ...

There are existing cuts and slots in the carpet that make it easier to route... just use a piece of heavy wire and draw the loom through.

I wouldn’t ever recommend running cables over the carpet, but if you do, make sure it doesn’t snag on the runners or strain the connection with the seat fully back or forward.

No no, not loose over the carpet. Tucked inside the hard plastic trim on the sill. But if it's easy to run them under the carpet I'll check it out, thanks.

Hello, i really need to ask what trim do you have, indeed ussefull but my SE has it...

Well, trim levels in Portugal are a bit different, and so are the options included in each. I have the middle Ambition level and it still lacks these small things like rear footwell lights , wheels are only 16", etc. But these aftermarket upgrades that are actually worth having are very cheap, so why not. I already started replacing interior lights with led, as well as rear turn signals, replaced rubber/plastic pedals and footrest with stainless steel ones (just at about a tenner, as opposed to original VAG ones at about 8x the cost) and swapped the front door courtesy lights with an led that projects the SKODA wording on the floor (although I have also bought the ones that project the actual logo, but it's the older, green one. Will choose which one I like best and sell the other one).
