How long for your heater to warm up ? 1.6 diesel

Featured Replies

Now the weather in the UK has turned cold how long does your skoda superb (mines  the 1.6 greenline 2012) take to warm up to get heat from heater ?

I would have to drive 17 miles of mixed roads before the temp gauge was reading 90 degrees ,and to get heat from heater it would be at least 10 miles, seems a bit far to me.

Now the wife who uses the car in the week for work only goes 4 to 5 miles between jobs and the heater never blows any thing that resembles heat.

In my experience diesel cars/vans dont seem to warm up as quick as petrol models.

What are your thoughts ?

Try to put piece of cardboard in front of the radiator - but no more than half of the width of the radiator.

Or there are special grilles - solid or with movable blinds.

My Greenline Superb used to take about 10 miles to provide adequate heat through the heater when temperature was below circa 4 centigrade.

I no longer run a diesel car. My petrol runabout VW Fox will blow hot air after 1 - 2 miles in similar temperature.

I had the thermostat replaced in September and it definitely functions better than the old one. However, it still takes a long time before the car gets up to temperature when going slower than 90km/h. I blocked off the entire lower grille from the outside and the car seems to warm up a bit faster. The engine oil temperature warms up quicker and stays toastier than before. Infact, I'm pretty sure the car wouldn't overheat if I blocked off half or even more of the higher grille as well. Maybe on longer motorway trips if I blocked off both grilles entirely.

Or fit one of these they are great....Instant heat:biggrin:
A good read if you have the time Info Here

The Scandinavian versions have extra heater onboard - electrically heated ceramic elements in airvents. They switch on automatically when temperature is below 10 C.

Takes about 1 km / couple of minutes to start blowing hot air.

Just what DEL8OY talks about.

As linni says here in Scandinavia the smaller TDIs have an extra electric heater, tho it starts below 5 degrees. Even 2.0 TDI has trouble reaching operating temperature during the coldest part of the winter and will even start to drop if the car sits still in ex a ferry line.

I don't think that the UK cars got the automatic electric ceramic PTC heater which is a shame as other VW cars get it here. My 1.6 takes ages to warm in the winter if I travel on ordinary roads but if I pull onto the nearby dual carriageway then unsurprisingly it warms up a lot faster.

I've also got a 2012 1.6 Greenline and mine has been exactly the same from new. The distances you are quoting tally with my experiences, too.

I stick the heated seat on (which also takes a good while to warm up) and put the front windscreen heater/blower onto max. That helps a bit.

You can buy them from Ebay for about £15 mines was less than a tenner and I just hard wired it up to battery with the correct  4 gauge wire and mounted a heavy duty switch in the wee glove box under the light switch.
JOB Done...
I couldn't get a hold of the dearer "E" Version when I was looking for one that you can wire in to the vehicle and it uses the canbus signals to switch it on and off as per above link

Works for me I just switch it of after about ten minutes..
Second best mod I have done to the vehicle after HHC:cool:

Did you put a fuse at that  end of the wire?

What switch did you use?

Happy New Year btw.

I have a 2014 Greenline3 1.6tdi, my heater is fairly tardy and reaching temperature but my engine hits 90 degrees pretty quickly, within 2-4 miles i’d say

I am sure it was a 100 amp midi fuse bolted straight to the battery bus bar and the switch was a heavy duty rotary switch from EBay when I am home I will send you the PDF WokWon sent me .

Happy New Year

Iv ordered the heater element how much of a pain is it to fit ?

I was thinking about using a timer relay and possibly a split charge relay so it only works when the alternator is charging

Cheers
