Retrofit heated screenwash jets?

Featured Replies

Is it possible to retrofit heated screenwash jets to a 2017 Yeti Outdoor 2.0?  I'm sure I could fit the jets but don't know what's required for wiring.

  • You might have noticed that the washer jets aren't in their usual place on the bonnet skin - they are under the edge on the bonnet support pressings. A gentle wiggle (care in the cold with plastic fas

  • I also checked mine at 2 degrees ambient.    No delay on washers.

More than just a bit of wire I think, they have a delay built into the wash motor so there must be a bit to that.

Just use a strong solution of screen wash and it wont freeze. Heater nozzles can only heat the bit of the solution passes through and at speed I doubt if it makes much difference.

I’ve driven in temps below -30 C without heated nozzles...they didnt exist then, but a good strong wash solution...the smell would give you a lift!

The liquid only freezes at the nozzles (and rear wash continues to work) s o I want to fit heated nozzles.  I'm using concentrated screenwash, diluted 50/50 which should be ok at -!0 but freezes in the nozzles at -2 due to wind chill.

Just wire their 12V feeds to an ignition live (preferably via a fuse), and their returns to chassis; job done.

If you want to save the odd ml of fuel, put a switch in one of those connections so you can enable/disable it seasonally.

Wont they burn out if used all the time?

No.

The factory fitted ones only come on briefly just before the pump starts, so I guess they are high wattage.  I don't think they would last if continuously powered.

Where did you get that info from?

I'm just searching current flow diagrams, and have yet to see anything suggesting such complexity.

Not sure what screen wash your using but it aint strong enough.. Up the concentration and make sure theres some of it in the nozzles before you good to bed.

i was in Spain 10 days ago -10 an snow, the nozzles popped out of the headlights and cleaned them and the windscreen was cleared..no heated nozzles here.

From the other forum.

The feed comes from pin 4 of a 52-way connector from the BCM. The point where this wire splits to the two individual jets is labelled 'connection 1 (75a) in main wiring harness'. Can't see what else if anything (75a) is connected to.

If heated jets is a VCDS-selectable option you could probably wire them up from the above  info, and have it 'factory'. Then you could check with a meter to see when they're on, and when they're not.

The single feed wire from pin 4 is only 0.5mm-sq, which rules out any high currents I think. Plus, wouldn't it be a pain to have the squirting delayed while the jets warmed up? Is there a delay between operating the spray and getting spray (question for an owner with heated jets)?

Thanks Wino. I wonder if the 0.5mm wire is just a signal and the jets have a separate power feed?  Anyway, it's doable, but not straightforward.  I was hoping others had done it before.  I will stock up on a reputable concentrate.  Most times it happened I got some water from the jets but it quickly stopped.  In future, I will let the reservoir drop to alarm so that, if it gets cold, I can get the reservoir filled with concentrate.  My first tankfull of concentrate was probably about 50/50 as I added 2.5 to 3 litres but that was in Scotland before we got far north.  Top ups after that were ready use all season stuff rated to minus six and that's because I couldn't find concentrate in the garages or supermarkets.

I looked at the AutoExpress 2018 screenwash test but their methodology is all wrong!  It does not matter how long the mix takes to freeze but at what temperature, especially if the car is not garaged.  Prestone came out tops as mentioned.

Anyone used Sonax?

Nope, the only wire to the jets is that single one from pin 4, splitting somewhere at the loom connection. Other wire to each jet is a 0.5mm earth.

Couldn't be much simpler.

Could you post or PM me a link to the info on this 'other forum' please?

It was just a remark by someone; I'll look but may not find it.  I'm only recently a Yeti owner so I took it on trust!

Fair enough. :)

I worry about the Mpemba Effect and have chosen not to heat my nipples err sorry jets....

I've ordered heated jets and plan to wire them via a fuse and manual switch.  Can anyone tell me where to source the plug for the wiring?  I mean the end of the wiring loom that would connect to the socket on the jet's electrical connector.  Does the plug have a maker/name?  Thanks.

What will you use for the delay, only about a second or so but I take it to get up to temperature before the water is pumped through.
Those fitted as standard only heat if air temperature below approx +10 degrees C.

I'll see if I can find the plug part number tomorrow if no-one else helps in the meantime. :)

I just want it to be on or off.  I believe the supply is a 0.5mm2 cable so the nozzle heater must be a low wattage.  It would be on when the air was dry and cold, which is when wind chill can cause a wet nozzle to freeze.  I have one arriving soon and will measure the current draw when connected to a 13V supply.
