DSG all day long for me. My current car is a DSG and the wife prefers it so she's gone for a DSG Karoq.

Up to you to decide if you think it is necessary to have 3 pedals and use your left leg.

If you like changing gear manually you can still do that with the DSG.

Seems odd to me to have the choice and not opt for the DSG (Automated manual)

Cost could be a factor

For me I just like to change gear but my main reason is cost (including service and the cost when anything goes wrong), I would rather have other extras over DSG but that is why there are these options as we are all different.

A knee injury forced me to have to swap my Roomster manual for a Roomster DSG.

Two years later and with fully recovered knee, I had come to enjoy DSG so much that I specified it for my Yeti.

Test drive both and see which you prefer, but I think you'll be surprised by how good DSG really is.

DSG all the way for me after owning 6 VW DSG's. Don't think I could (or want) to go back to a manual now.

My last 3 cars have been Auto boxes, torque converter. After a test drive in a 1.5 DSG I was surprised it was an even smoother gear changer than my previous cars. I doubt I would ever go back to a manual box.

DSG is worth every penny in my opinion (and it gets full warranty, unlike clutches on manual which are limited to 6 months)

Probably get some cost back in fuel savings due to the extra gear and fact it will change gears much more frequently than anyone doing it manually in the real world

Don't know anyone that has DSG who says next car should revert to manual

For Edition spec, in percentage terms, its not that much extra cost (and if you are getting car with auto wipers, auto lights, auto cabin temperature etc. why would you want to change gear manually, its a bit like saying you prefer the effort of having manual wind up windows),  This will be a car in use in 2020s, not 1950s

I like both. I have a manual Octy VRS for open roads and the "more connected" feel, plus will soon be getting a DSG Karoq for city traffic and the daily nose-to-tail commute.

Whether DSG is worth the extra £1200 depends upon usage and personal preference. Having owned a number of manual and dual-clutch autos, I find neither is perfect for every situation. VAG DSG's have a slight habbit of holding on to too-high a gear at inconvenient times. At least with a manual, the car does exactly what is expected all of the time.

I'm actually having DSG for the first time when I order a Karoq. I'm paying for it by not having a diesel!! I've also figured out that by putting my foot down to overtake without having to manually change gear will also cancel out the extra torque that you get with a diesel manual!

Best thing about DSG - if you're munching a sandwich, apple or pork pie when you approach a roundabout or junction, you can carry on munching as you don't need your left hand to change gear. Seriously, I had a manual Yeti when the wife bought an Octavia DSG. I liked it so much I changed the Yeti for a new one with DSG. We've since bought the Karoq, again with DSG. We took the 5 year warranty on the Karoq, so the DSG box is covered for the duration.

Ahhhh. Maybe that's why my Uncle always said that automatics were for ****ers.....    ;)

Test drive one or borrow one for a weekend, see if it's for you?

I've driven many DSGs on hire cars for business and holiday. Two things have made me buy one for my new Karoq

1) They are so good now and help other features (stop start, cruise control, etc)

2) Most times driving is is not fun enough to warrant a manual.

Basically 20 years ago when I was  driving like Colin McRae around empty rural roads, I'd pick manual. Now it's DSG for me.

Looks like dsg then as nobody drives manual any more thanks for your reply

Bit of a sweeping statement that!

That statement might be true in the USA & Canada where 95% plus of cars are automatic.

In the UK and Europe it is less than 20% that are automatics. It is fair to say the proportion of automatics is on the increase though.

I drive manual, have done for almost 30 years.  Have tried automatics now and then but I think I'm a control freak!

Test drove the DSG Edition but I hated the way the engine cuts out at a junction and I couldn't pull away quickly.  With manual I feel I have more control and it's safer.  I'm sure there's probably a way to stop the engine from going to sleep when necessary with the DSG but I prefer manual and that it's cheaper.

Just turn stop start off to solve that issue.

I wouldn't want to turn it off for good as it would be fine in a traffic jam etc.

Just slightly ease up on the footbrake and the engine instantly restarts. Then press on brake again. Engine will not stop running again until the car has moved and stopped again.

Or as above just turn it off completely for the period you don't want it or the whole journey if thats what you want.

^^^ Moved on,

There is auto hold, no need for foot on foot brake after you have come to a stop, or electric brake, you just touch the throttle to start it when stop / start in enabled / active.

On the odd occasion I forget to turn it off in my Golf and the engine shuts off, one small wiggle on the steering wheel restarts the engine, wonder if the karoq will do this......

I have ordered the DGS Edition and will never go back to a manual car through choice.
