Removing wing Mirror Covers MK2

Featured Replies

Winter has not fared well on my vinyl wrap wing mirrors so i am going to replace with primed ones which i want to paint & laquer, then swap over.

To remove the current ones do you just prise them out from the covers bottom side & sort of lever out or do you need to take the mirror surround off?

Thanks for guide if im reading it correctly looks like i just need to remove the upper cover (top part no1)

i dont need to disturb the bottom half or take the mirror out so shouldnt need to take the frame out.

Copied it below for future reference. It is only item 1 that i am painting so should be able to prise it out with some sort plastic hand tool

Removing lower mirror cover

1 -  Upper cover
2 -  Lower cover
Removing:
–  Remove mirror frame (Pos. 4).
–  Remove upper cover (Pos. 1).
–  Remove mirror glass (Pos. 3).
–  Disconnect plug connections for mirror heating (depending upon vehicle equipment).
–  Disconnect plug connection for electrical mirror tilting or control cable for mechanical mirror tilting (depending upon vehicle equipment).
hinweis.gif  Note
In order to maintain the proper operation of mirror tilting after reinstalling, the positions of the electrical wiring in the plug connection (necessary to be removed from the plug connection) or the control cable for the mechanical wiring must be marked!
–  Pull the electrical wiring or control cables for mirror tilting through the mirror joint.
–  Mark the fitting position of the lock washer (Pos. 8) above the spring and remove it carefully.
hinweis.gif  Note
Secure washer against jumping off in order to avoid any injury!
–  Remove spring.
–  Remove the noise insulation.
Installing:
–  Position the lower cover onto the joint.
–  Insert screw M8 (Pos. 5) from below in the joint (Pos. 7), position spring (Pos. 6), lock washer (Pos. 8), device (Pos. 9), flat washer (Pos. 10), nut (Pos. 11) as shown.
–  Mount lock washer on the bolt up to its original position by tightening the nut gradually (they have been marked before removal).
–  Further installation occurs in reverse order to removal.
hinweis.gif  Note
When installing, use new lock washer!
3 -  Mirror glass
4 -  Mirror frame
5 -  Screw M8x90
6 -  Spring
7 -  Studs

Use e.g. -MP3-465 (30-206)-, -T30087 (3367)-.
10 -  Flat washer
11 -  Nut - M8
12 -  Electrical line

The way I read it is item 4, the frame, is the first part to remove as it locks everything else in place. Let us know how you get on.

I see what you mean looks like if you get the surround off no.4 and the mirror no.3  is then loose then the top cover no 1, is easier to get off as its not as restricted?

Yup, that’s how I read it anyway.

Yep, the bezel (4) Needs to come off first. May be worth removing the glass to protect it. Then the cap unclips easily. Be careful to use plastic tools so as to protect the paintwork. BTW, do you have the primed caps? I have had a very nicely priced cap from an eBay seller, painted to code etc for the kind of money most want just for the cap! Saves a chunk of work, too!

Had a closer look the outer bezel is on really tight, i can see some previous marks where the vinyl wrap guy has likely got them off using a screwdriver.

Had a go at prising from the top corner, not fully done it as it will damage the vinyl wrapping further. There is some movement. Needs a few flat head screwdrivers i think and then 'edge along'

Ive got the new primed ones arriving soon so will have to spray them up ready for the swap over. Will update....

Hi yes looking at similar polo 2010 guide (not same design but is a 2 part upper / lower)  looks like it could be glass first to gain access to the tabs for the bezel & top cover should just pop off upwards

While your at it replace the passenger side mirror with a Europe mirror. You will have blindspot mirrors on both sides then!

Ok done!

Edge off surround using 0.5 to 0.6mm gauge, then pull with finger nails

then lift top cover upwards no need to remove glass!

Hi I have a replacement top cap and bottom trim but have no idea how to get the bottom off there seems to be a washer on top of a spring when I look underneath I cannot see anything to undo it help.

You have to prise the trim (4) using thin metal strip as per post above. It does feel like you are going to break something at first!

then the top cover (2)  sort of peel upwards. Ive included links for the parts below so you can see them better
