Need help - oil leak from the dipstick - 1.4 TDI 2008 , Fabia

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I need a help on a oil leak issue that i am facing with Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI 2008

After i drive for about 50-60 kms, i can see a oil leak from my oil dipstick. The oil is present all the way to the top of the dispstick and is also
spilled inside the engine cabin, from the dipstick. After i noticed the issue i have only driven the car for about 200 miles and the oil loss seems to be low.
the total mileage on the car is 60000 miles.
also, there is considerable blowby from the dipstick.

After reading through different forums, i see that its most likely caused by either  a bad CCV or worn out rings.
Before i get the work done on the piston rings , i just want to make sure that CCV is not the problem .  Could you guys please help me to locate the CCV on
the 1.4 TDI engine. I have attached a pic here , please tell me if what i have marked is correct.

Also,
Are there any other things apart from CCV or the piston rings that can cause oil leak , which needs to be checked.

Firstly, you say oil is present all the way to the top of the dipstick.  Do you mean to the UPPER LEVEL or to the actual TOP OF THE DIPSTICK?

If you mean the upper level, thats ok but if you mean right to the top of the stick, this is SEVERELY overfilled and can be very, very bad for your engine and turbo unit! DO NOT CONTINUE TO RUN IT LIKE THIS!

It would be no wonder you get blow by from the dipstick (I assume here, you mean it is blowing back out the top of the stick... Blow back).  The upper full level is way, way down near the lower end of the dipstick. If it IS this full, You will need to drain the oil down to the proper level as soon as you can,. without running the engine.

Going back to the dipstick, let the engine cool properly, then remove the dipstick and clean it on a clean cloth. Now, push it back in and take a fresh reading. If you don't do that, the oil WILL be a long way up the stick as it will have splashed everywhere during driving/running the engine so a clean, wiped stick is essential to get an accurate reading of the oil level.  It can be hard enough in a diesel engine anyway as the oil turns black after a fairly small amount of miles and the stick its-self is black. (Dunno what smart arse thought of that). Clearly, a silver, metallic dipstick would have served better! Takes a keen eye and a few attempts to correctly read the oil level properly.

Hope I am not sounding patronising but again, I am going to say, if filled to the top of the actual dipstick, DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE! DRAIN THE OIL TO THE CORRECT LEVEL FIRST!  I really don't want you to damage your unit more then you may possibly have done!

mrgf,

Thanks for your reponse,

I think i was not clear in my earlier post.

what i meant "to the top of the dipstick " is :

The oil is not filled to the top of the dipstick, but there are oil traces all the way to the top of the dipstick, and some oil jumps out of the dipstick and is spilled in the engine bay.

the oil level is normal .

Effectively, oil is leaking from the dipstick and i want to know why is that happening.

1. is it because of a blocked EGR ?

2. Blocked CCV ?

3. Bad dipstick tube ?

4. worn out rings ?

5. or anything else ?

Welcome.

?

How long have you had the car?

How long has this been happening?

Is it just for the past 200 miles, is that when you got the car?

Do you know the correct quantity of oil is in the engine, is the level correct when checked?    Not too much oil in.

When was the Oil & Filter last changed?

Blocked crankcase ventilation system could cause problems like this, so check that it isn't blocked.

I believe your photo correctly identifies one end.

This has been happening very recently just for the past 200-300 miles.

I have this car for the past  2 years and have driven about 15000 miles with no problem.

the oil quantity is correct.

The car has run about 2000 miles since the last oil filter change.

There's a photo (8th one) in this listing that shows a view of the inside of the cover.  The valve appears to be integrated into the cover.  Should be easy enough to check the hose anyway, just detach from both ends and check for blockage.

Thanks, Thats the first check i will do.

Phew! At least it doesn't seem my fears were real... I hope you manage to sort this issue quickly and without too much expenditure! The dipstick tube may have a poor seal on it along with other issues so worth checking.  I think it has had fresh oil long enough not to be the issue of having the old oil filter's rubber seal left inside the oil filter casing. I think in earlier threads, this caused an oil light to come on anyway.
