Battery Drain, Door locks and Cruise

Featured Replies

So I recently purchased a Skoda Superb Mk1, 2005 reg. It's got a few things wrong with it.

The first is the most annoying because it meant that the car won't start at all due to the battery being flatter than a pancake. It jump starts okay though. I did some googling and the answers seem to be split between brake pedal switches, car alarms and the radio/sat nav unit. I left it with my local garage and they said the battery is okay (and it was changed in 2016 so I'd hope so) but that they have found a 1.5 amp drain coming from the radio unit, which when the fuse is taken out it drops to 0.4 amps (or something like that). Now from the threads I read about the radio, apparently it's only fixable with a software update and I'd need to ask someone on the forum who is local to me and has a special gadget to do that?

The second issue is that the rear door on the drivers side doesn't unlock or lock with the central locking (although you can get it open manually from the inside). When it is open, the courtesy light doesn't come on either. The main courtesy lights at the front of the car are sometimes randomly flickering on when I'm driving too, which I am guessing is perhaps also the door causing that? One of my other local garages says door locks for these are really expensive, like £150 or something? I saw a post talking about getting a door lock from Ebay I think. Would that be the correct one for the rear drivers side on a Mk1 Superb?

The last issue is that the cruise control disengages itself after a few minutes. You can set it fine and it works perfectly, but then you'll feel a slight judder from the car a few minutes later, as if the brakes or accelerator had been touched, and then the cruise control goes off and the car starts to decelerate. I couldn't find any ideas about that one, although I did note that the radio buttons on the steering wheel don't work. The cruise control buttons do work, but maybe whatever fault is in that wheel module stopping the radio controls could be cutting off the cruise too?

So if anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful.

Apologies for the slightly chaotic layout.  Something went slightly wrong!

Some of these issues are standard Passat/ Superb faults.  Designed into the models!

Flickering courtesy lights sounds like water under the passenger side front and rear carpets.  It corrodes the cable connections and can get into the CCU (convenience control unit) under the passenger footwell carpet.  Joints need cleaning and soldering, and the carpet underlay drying out, pollen filter and door window regulators sealing properly. Rear doorlock is between £15 and £20 ish on ebay.  Info here....

Can't help with the GPS unit, but find it hard to believe the story about an update fixing it, and I guess the cruise problem could wait for a while?

www.ukpassats.co.uk will help with lots of info and links.

Perhaps the radio drain problem was to do with the double DIN sets including sat nav.

Anyway, the thread I meant to link to was this one about the rear door lock..."Rear drivers door won't unlock", a few down from this one.

Water leaks, door locks, brake light switch are all common faults that most of us have to deal with. The car should be good once you've fixed all the designed in problems.

Yes, the garage says that the drain is definitely from the audio system; but obviously we don't know why. I could leave the fuse out, but I'd rather have the radio working. If anyone has had similar issues and could make a suggestion as to what would fix the issue, that'd be good.

I've seen that door lock thread, and will likely order one. I read the water ingress thread and I'll have to set aside some time to take the battery, pollen filter, passenger seat and carpets out when I get it back.

Just spoke to the garage again, and there's another drain coming from the rear drivers side door, so that's been completely disconnected now. Worst case I'll leave that unplugged, leave the fuse out the radio, and then get round to checking for water ingress/damage which may well solve a lot of the issues if the wires under there have started to corrode. The battery compartment is dry, and the foot wells feel dry but you never know what's happened in the past with it.

Yes, a look under the passenger side front and rear carpets is a must.  The sponge underlay / soundproofing under there can hold enough water to fill a swimming pool.

Ordered the door lock from the link in that thread. It arrived a couple of days ago. It's not the correct part. Neither the door lock or the electrical connections fit at all. I expect it won't be refundable. The door is in bits now, so I can't drive the car. I've had to ask the garage to source a second hand one - they estimate about £35.

Which one is it that you ordered?  Most of the ebay stuff has a check list to make sure it will fit your car.

If it indicates it should fit , but it doesn't, then I would expect them to refund.

I know it doesn't solve your immediate problem, but to try to look on the brighter side, at least you now have the correct part to compare, and also the part number.

The one from your post that you referred me to. In the thread for someone else with a 2005 1.9TDI Skoda Superb Mk1 with a rear drivers-side door issue.

Now that I look at it, it doesn't say that it fits any Skodas at all. I just went on the assumption that you had linked the correct one, considering both thread titles/forum location.

Caveat Emptor, I guess.

Looks like Skoda parts are pricier https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SKODA-SUPERB-1-MK1-2001-2008-REAR-RIGHT-Door-Lock-Mechanism-BRAND-NEW/281304373169?hash=item417f0c17b1:g:cR0AAOxyUylTQa6l

Many of the VW and Skoda parts are interchangeable.  I remember when I replaced a rear door lock a few years ago the prices for parts listed as Skoda were more expensive than ones listed as for VW, even though many were the same parts.

Have a look at the part number on your old one.  The final letter(s) at the end indicate slight revisions to the specification and are often not important.

Then you can search by part No. rather than make and model of car.

I've just checked in my garage for you....In Feb this year I changed the rear near side lock on my 2005 Superb.  The original lock was part No. 3B4 839 015M  and I replaced it with a 3B4 839 015A from ebay which fitted perfectly.

With regard to the VW radio's they do not turn off completely when you take the ignition key out or manual switch them off. There is a setting somewhere which keeps them background running, including the DX unit so that is still listening and recording any traffic updates. I think it can be changed to 30 to 3 hours.

Sorry for the delay. I managed to get a door lock for the door, but it only half worked. So after borrowing one from a garage which definitely worked, it turned out that while the lock was faulty.. that wasn't the total story for why the door wouldn't work. It now locked but wouldn't unlock. Of course the answer was under the passenger side front footwell where the CCM was underwater and the wires were corroding. So that took a while to get sorted.

And then the car went in for a service and some body-work repair and 2 days later all the problems came back again. Guess what? Turns out that the wires were damaged in the rear passenger footwell too. So it's taken about 2 months all in all to sort it out to a point where I've managed to drive the car for more than a couple of days and I'm still waiting on parts for the brakes.

Oddly enough as soon as the wires were repaired, the majority of the issues with the audio, lights etc all disappeared too.

Also a question about windscreen wipers. I orders some new blades online using the car details to ensure they were the right ones and when they came, they were the new slimline aero blades with a post style  fitting - a sort of thin stick that goes through a hole and clips over. Looking in the car manual the picture of the blade replacement also shows these. So why do the arms on my car require hook style wipers? Has someone changed the wiper arms?

Edited by Lasairfion

In 2003 the wiper arm design was changed. I know as the wipers listed for 2003 always come for the new style and I have the old style on a 2003 hook. I always forget when ordering.
