Skoda Fabia 1.2 TSI Monte Carlo - Check engine light for read indicator ?

Featured Replies

Hello All

Would be grateful of some knowledge. firstly i haven't got a Skoda, im looking to buy one and i recently test drove one at Skoda Progress Bedford. First things first, as soon i sat in car for test drive i was told the rear bulb for indicator was playing up and so it would flash quick on my dash and hence the check engine light. (I'm not technically minded so i figured ok) test drove ok. Abit sluggish maybe thats because im used to 107bhp Kia Rio and this was the 90BHP model so i figured that would be the reason it felt like that. The indictor did flash quicker than i expected but i was told the part would be due in 2 days and would be fitted and all would be well.

So i agreed to the sale i had to go back a few days later to sign finance. So on that day i ask if part was in and had it been fitted was told he had to check and would call me later that day. No call, get an email on the next morning saying part fitting today and road test due the following day ( i figured a road test wouldn't be needed surely just a flick of the indictor will tell you if it works or not) . So i said ok fine, can you call me yesterday (saturday) and tell me how the road test went so i can sort insurance, no call by 4pm so i call and he hasn't had the paperwork from service dept. Fine, so email this morning from him stating the light still showed up as issue so now they replacing all the lights on the back so i asked for an update regarding time frame. This baring in mind, im meant to collect the car tomorrow at 9:30am i live about 25 miles from the dealer so its a good 40 mins drive possibly more at that time with people going to work.

Now i have looked at this, and i can't fully remember but the lights that showed on the dashboard included the engine light - now having done so very quick research this appears to be the Exhaust inspection system i think. Surely this wouldn't come up if just the tail light needed changing?

So really what im wanting to know is A) can a light cause that engine light? B ) Am i being maybe lied to about the condition of the vehicle and actually something major is wrong and they are stalling so they can fix it? C) Is this a major issues with the vehicle is this likely to cause problems further done the line? D) what do you guys think i should do?

Im really tempted to just end it now get my deposit back and call the finance team and tell them no thank you as i have 14 days which we are already 3 into and i don't want them to stall long enough that im then stuck with this potently faulty car once im past the 14 day cooling off period.

any thoughts or advice you have would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Daryel

Welcome.

So what age is the car, what miles has it done, what servicing has been done, how many registered keepers or who was the registered keepers.

Have you got or seen the Service Record & any Warranty Record for the car?

That can be called up on the System if it is a VW Group Main Dealership selling the car.

Or get what is on the system from SKODA UK Customer Services or a Main Dealership.

I would not collect the car until you know it's history, like was it a lease car, a hire car, a driving school car.

If Full Main Dealer Service History, what was done, just Oil & Filters and Free Wash & Vacuums and look sees?

Offski,

thanks for the reply.

I managed to get the VIN. So had a look at My Skoda app to tell me this as dealer hasnt shown me any of this.

The app states what looks to be a full service history from this dealer. Purchase as new from there then service at 9560, then at 21521, then 29393 this says KM status but miles next to it? The reason i question that is its on about 27200 miles roughly. its a 65 plate registered in November so not had its first MOT yet. I believe 1 registered keeper but ill be honest not even sure on that.

I just don't believe that a light could cause that engine light from what i remember and surely a road test isn't needed. Now i asked why the delay the other day as was told its end of month and lots of cars going out and then normal service jobs taking place.

Hi Daryel - on basis of your description - those symptoms  don’t sound quite right .

A faulty bulb would take them no more than 10 minutes to fit - and it’s odd that they don’t have bulbs in stock.

A faulty bulb just throws a red triangle warning light below that display between the speedo and the rev counter .

It should not be associated with the engine warning light - if engine warning light is on - there is something more wrong than a blown bulb!

[edit]... and as you say - it shouldn’t need a test drive for replacing a blown bulb !!

Just seeing @Offski‘s response there - and I’m in agreement - there’s indications of “fishiness” here, that demand answers.

Mithane,

Thanks for the reply.

See this is exactly what im starting to think. I didn't question it at first but I've been told like 3 dates that i could maybe collect the car then somehow something comes up and delays it further.

I don't know if he's going to respond to me tomorrow before i leave but im tempted to head down and try get some actual answers as im really worried this might be a dud and im in no reason position to be left with a dud car.

All I’d say is to take your “thinking time” and if you’ve the slightest doubt - walk away!

There’s lots of other good cars out there!

And dealers! This one is not making a good impression - already!

@Mithane

Well i have to say i wasn't sure at the start that i wanted a new car but thought i would pop down see what they could give me for old one. Looked like a good deal so thought yeah ok lets go for it.  I think im going to need to think about it and try get as much info as possible for this and well exactly i was promised call backs never happened. Takes 30 seconds to pick up the phone. Not a good impression already.

However thanks for the advise on this. I will update the thread with what happens next.

Likely it needs new spark plugs at the very least.

It should have had the fault codes read and seen if it was misfires or what was showing.

No idea what nonsense they are playing at.

  • Author

@Offski Thanks for this. Im not mechanically minded but they plug a machine in and it tells them whats wrong right?

So update on whats happening. He emailed me tonight. stating he will speak to parts manager in the morning and get back to me. Yet more delays!

Not a great impression so far.

So update on this as we stand. I didn't go to collect the car this morning. I spent some of my morning on the phone to VWFS to understand where i stand with maybe cancelling or rejecting the car.

The dealer advise part ordered and should be here Tomorrow (Tuesday) ready for Wednesday pick up. So i said to him i don't have much confidence in this. I want a full service history of vehilce (see attached) and i want to know what exactly is wrong with the vehicle so i have a record of it and i would like a diagnostic report of the vehicle. So now waiting on those.

doc03742820180702100316.pdf

Walk. Away. Now.  Plenty of other good, and genuine, cars out there.

further update -

Dealer manager calls me. says sorry for the fact the service so far hasn't been the best and that they seem to be messing me around.

guess what, more than just the light problem too......

turbo actuator? has developed a fault and the car is going to get a brand new turbo and actuator plus the lights being sorted aswel.

So im still going to view the vehicle now due for pick up Wednesday. Im going to test drive it and see what i think. I due to get a pre and post diagnostic report so i can see the work has taken place.

then i will see what i actually want to do with it.

That is more like the response I would expect from Progress. I have had several cars from Bedford and had good service from them every time.

  • Author

@peter3197 well this is my first dealing with any Skoda dealer so not great yet, but lets see what they can do to put right. I have a list of freebies/ compensation that i have in mind lets see how sorry they actually are.

AHHHH,  so the issue that the Euro 5 TSI's now with Euro 6's.    At least not the years of denial that Euro 5 1.2 TSI / TFSI owners had.

Turbo Shims,  Remaps, Failed Actuators, and warranty claims and now warranty rejections and some told you need Turbo & Actuator,

and some dealers can do just an actuator.

So at least it will be done.

Be sure 2 years Warranty Parts & Labour get in writing, and not to end of Manufacturers Warranty / Skoda Approved Car 12 months or such.

  • Author

@Offski Thanks trust me i will be getting everything in writing to confirm exactly what has gone wrong, what has been done to fix and how long i have it covered. Just doing a quick google and it does appear to be an issues not just on this car but across VAG as a whole.

It was, and i personally thought one that was resolved, but as with everything VW Group only time tells.

Mk3 Fabia launched 2014, Autocar Car of the year before anyone has them, then customers get them 2015, and warranties now expiring.

1.2 TSI's discontinued.  How very VW Group, move on, nothing to see here....

Well lets see what happens. I get my 12 months used car warranty but going to push for long because of the messing around and not being 100% honest.

A 24 month warranty from the Dealer / Skoda Warranty would be nice, costs them little, keeps you buying the car, maybe gets you having them service it,

and they get a 'Big Up', on Social Media / BRISKODA.

Worth a lot of value to them to do the right thing and be seen to.  Power of the internet.

And now no Dealership can say.   Turbo Actuator problems, that was in the past.  Nor can Skoda UK Customer Services.  Vorsprung Durch Technik, but in Czech.

Exactly what I'm thinking. My list is full tank of fuel. Road tax, either a free armrest or at least 50% off the price they quoted for one and 24 months warranty and see then depends on reaction to that see what else i can push my luck for.

If you don’t get what you want, say you’re having second thoughts, just walk away and see what happens. If they have to chase you as you’re about to leave or call you up the next day there’s a good chance they’ll be willing to fulfil your requests.

1.2TSI EA211 Turbo troubles, oh bother bother bother!

@inversesandwich Indeed thats what I'm thinking. I think they will, way i see it road tax is £20 and tank of fuel is £60. You complain to any bank you normally get that as a gesture of good will. And for a dealership £60 is nothing. So i think its fair i try push for the rest.

@rum4mo Yes i had a quick google yesterday does seem to be an issues. but i see it now as potentially a car with brand new turbo, hopefully one less thing to go wrong anytime soon.

The last time I complained to my bank for messing up, the "controllers in India" shut my case down after telling me that they had stuffed £25 into my account, after waiting for the promised follow up letter explaining what went wrong, just in case I was partly to blame - and that turning up, I complained again, all that did was get the "controllers in India" to contact me in a rather annoyed voice asking what needed doing, I explained I needed a blow by blow explanation of what went wrong, why it went wrong and what they intended to do to stop that happening, if that did not come to me through my letter box I was going to the financial ombudsman and requested that they investigate this nonsense/non conformance, another £125 was stuffed into my account so yes, I stopped there!

Anyway, turbos or their waste gate control systems failing on EA211 engine family from VW Group - I'd like to know more about that as my wife has one of them in her Polo, to date, this is only the first time that I've spotted anything about them, the turbo and wastegate control issues from the earlier family of engines yes, but that this one - so far!  I'll stay in denial until the poo hits the fan in my wife's car or one near it!
