Octavia 5E / Amundsen Sat Nav Update Query

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

First post - please be gentle!

Trying to update the Maps in my 66-plate Octavia.  The SD card in the Nav unit (Amundsen 2) is version 5L0 051 236L / ECE1 2016/17 (KT 22 / 2016).

When I go to the update portal and enter my VIN, it says "No updates for VIN".

Went to local Skoda dealer and they tried & got the same result.  They were puzzled.  The dealer also tried the VIN numbers for a 16-plate and a 67-plate octavia and got the same result.

Is the update portal down or having problems?

I have sees a couple of Skoda SD cards on ebay - one labelled 5L0 051 236AD (KT 45 / 2017) and the other 236T (KT 22 / 2017).  Would they be compatible & just slot straight in to update the maps?  Do they have to be registered in any way?  They say they are compativble with the Amundsen 2 MIB.

I took three different VIN numbers of Octavias with the same Sat Nav whist I was at the dealer and also tried those on the update site.  Two say the same as mine - i.e. "No updates for VIN" whilst the third says "Last update Nov 17, next Aug 18".

Is there a problem with the update site??

Cheers,

Zaph

It looks like the update site again thinks that updates are not available.

With my VIN it started doing this the week after my car was 3 years old earlier this month?

I suspect yet another bodged update site "update".

Does this happen often then as you said "again" ?

Great how 'updates' seem to cause more problems than they fix!

The update portal regularly gives out-of-date or wrong information :wall:

The best source of map updates is the Octavia 3 forum, where direct links get posted by other members. I've recently updated my Amundsen MIB1 to the latest 2018/2019 maps that way.

If you buy an SD Card from eBay then it will probably have an old version of the map data on it (unless the vendor has specifically updated the maps himself) so you'll probably end up with the same as you have now.

You can only use a Skoda SD card in the Amundsen MIB2 - there is some secure data on the card that identifies it as a valid card for the Amundsen SatNav. As long as it's a proper Skoda card the it will work. But then you already have a Skoda card so there is no need to buy another.

If you are reasonably comfortable using a Windows PC then it is not difficult to download and update the maps manually, provided you have a means of accessing the SD card from the PC (i.e. an SD slot on the PC or a USB-SD adaptor). I did this yesterday using the map data linked by member "unataztood" who provided the link below for the 2018/2019 maps

http://infotainment-cdn.skoda-auto.com/base/maps/STD2_1030_EU1_201819.zip

I can give you full details on the procedure if you wish ?

That's great BOD20, thank you for your reply.

I knew that you copuldn't use just any old SD Card as Skoda had written data in the secure area of the card (which most mortals cannot access).

I found the following links on the Octavia III forum ...

MIB1 Amundsen: http://vw-mapscdn.tdd.adacorcdn.com/P75_N60S3MIBS2_EU.7z

MIB2 Amundsen: http://vw-mapscdn.tdd.adacorcdn.com/DiscoverMedia2_EU1_2718_1030.7z

MIB1/MIB2 Columbus: http://vw-mapscdn.tdd.adacorcdn.com/P169_N60S5MIBH3_EU.7z

These should install ECE1 2018/19 maps.

Telling me the MIB2 file is 12.1Gb.

Procedure is to ...

  1. Download .zip file from site
  2. Copy contents of old Skoda SD card to PC or USB (as a backup in case of failure/corruption)
  3. Unlock SD Card using slide switch on card
  4. Format SD Card (using FAT 32 and 4kb blocks) - will NOT overwrite the secure area of the card (mentioned above)
  5. Unzip contents of downloaded file
  6. Copy contents of .zip file to SD Card
  7. Lock SD CArd using slide switch
  8. Put into Slot 2 of Infotainment system (in glovebox)

Is the above correct?

Is there another step - pressing 'Update' on the head unit somewhere or will popping the updated card into the system just work?

Cheers,

Zaph

That should do it, but note that these links you have there will download a ".7z" file, which may need some additional software on the PC to extract the contents. The link here will download a ".zip" file that Windows can extract without any additional software.

The full procedure I used yesterday was as follows -

Download link   http://infotainment-cdn.skoda-auto.com/base/maps/STD2_1030_EU1_201819.zip

Manually updating Amundsen MIB2 map data

1.    Download the latest map data from the link above  (note that this may take an hour or more to complete)

2.    Unzip (right-click on file and select "Extract All" ) the downloaded file to a folder on your PC. This may take 15-30 minutes. After unzipping the folder should contain a “maps” folder and a TXT document with “md5sum” in the filename.

3.    Connect the SD card to the computer

4.    For peace of mind, copy the entire contents of the SD card to another folder (e.g. “OldMaps) on your PC

5.    Slide the small lock tab on the SD card to the “unlock” position to enable writing to the card

6.    On the PC, right-click the SD card icon and select “Format”

7.    Format the card using “FAT32” and the default “4096 bytes” allocation unit size

8.    Now copy the new satnav data (i.e. the “maps” folder and the “TXT” file) to the newly formatted SD card. This can take another 20-30 minutes to complete.

9.    Once complete, when you open the SD card on the PC you should see only a “maps” folder and the “……md5sum.txt” file.

10.  Remove the SD card from the PC and slide the lock tab to lock the card.

11.  Put the SD card back into the Amundsen unit and switch on.

Thank you BOD20.

Followed your .zip link above:  http://infotainment-cdn.skoda-auto.com/base/maps/STD2_1030_EU1_201819.zip then downloaded & unzipped files and followed the rest of your procedure to the letter.  Download took bl**dy ages (more than 12 hours) and 'failed' a couple of times but eventually I'd managed to d/load the entire file.

Sat Nav is now updated to 5L0 051 236AH / ECE1 2018/19 - so one very happy bunny

Thanks once again.

Happy motoring, Zaph

I assume you have a MIB2 or MIB2.5 Amundsen?

In which case, you need "ROW 3" from here:

If you don't know how to use the map update, try this:
