Removing gear stick surround - MK3 FL VRS 245

Featured Replies

Had my used MK3 FL VRS 245 for a couple of days and loving it. So much performance, so many gadgets. But I'm starting to notice the little issues the irk me.

The first (of what will be many fixes I need to do) is the gear stick surround which is scratched up despite this car being only 8 months old and keyless! What did they drag up and down this surround is beyond me. Black mirror finish plastic does not wear well.

Clearly the Skoda dealer who drive this car first on the Skoda lease program did not care about keeping it pristine - scratches all over the place!

So I'm looking to remove it and see if first I can polish it up. Failing that I may wrap or replace.

Q1 - any tips on removal?

Q2 - any good plastic polish suggestions?

Q3 - any idea on replacement part sourcing and cost?

Many thanks

It is veeeeeeeery easy to be scratched. I am taking care of mine so much, but it is again scratched all over the place.

Simply this fake black piano plastic is fine only first few days owning a car. Impossible to keep it.

Use little dusters to clean dirt and wipe it very very rare. I had to bring my car to detailers to fix issues before I've found out for these little dusters.

"Little dusters" - is this a specific product?

Either the gear lever gaiter comes out first revealing screws holding panel in or the whole lot comes out complete,I image it's the first option, but I don't know, you'll have to do some exploratory pulling, hard and carefully release tags may become evident as the gaiter distorts.

As for the finish I have NEVER come across anything as vulnerable it's crap.

I am also trying very hard to resist wrapping mine.

Did anyone manage to figure out how to lift the surround?  Got some matte black wrap left and wandered about doing this.  Also the slidy cubby lid too?
