Google Maps is finally available in Apple CarPlay

Featured Replies

Yeah. Google Maps is finally available in Apple CarPlay!

Update to iOS12 and then update Google Maps.

Open Settings on your iPhone, navigate to General > CarPlay

Select SKODA AUTO

You should now see the CarPlay interface on your screen. Swipe to the next screen and you will find Google Maps. Press and hold too drag-and-drop to the home screen (1st page).

Next time you use CarPlay in your car you will find Google Maps on the screen.

Nice. I've just updated to Google Maps. Next to come Waze in the not too distant future ... hopefully.

It’s a real ‘at last!’ moment, isn’t it?

Have to say, the frequency with which Google maps & Waze get updated makes both manufacturer in-car navs and TomTom devices pretty much redundant.

Wonder how many more CarPlay and Android Auto apps will be targeted at in-car use?

Have actioned the above and it is......brilliant (or even superb) ! Thanks

That is fine for techno-crats, some of us are dinosaurs who dont use i-phones, please don't push for removing sat navs, it is my saviour on most new routes. I have got one really but my son has moved to New Zealand and he is not around to show me how to use it properly.

Funnily enough, I don’t completely trust a nav on longer journeys to new or complicated destinations. Still use a map book to establish the outline of the route.

Using maps via CarPlay is easier than a manufacturer nav, though - I just click on the Siri voice assistant and ask it to ‘navigate to...’ etc. Usually works fine.

One of the good things about Google maps via CarPlay is that it can display a satellite image of the route instead of the simple map. Pretty good for picking out recognisable landmarks.

Hi, guys!

Can someone anser my question regarding carplay?

I currently have an android phone. But, since apple released ios 12 with 3rd party map functionality, I am now thinking of getting an iphone as a second phone.(need a second phone anyways)

My main phone will still be android phone. So, I want to know if I connect my iphone as carplay device and get a call to my android phone will the call get thru the cars multimedia? Or is it that if carplay is on, you can recieve calls only from one device?

I have observed, that when I connect my android devices through bluetooth I can have multiple devices connected and I can recieve calls from all devices. But when I connect using cable, it kills bluetooth connections and only 1 device remains connected.  It may be the case also with carplay.

Thanks, I hope some can give the exact answer.

Yes, CarPlay also kills bluetooth. i.e. cannot use iPod as bluetooth source and iPhone with CarPlay.

Instead of two phones, would you consider the likes of a Samsung S9 with dual sim functions. I don't know how the dual sim works in practice but one phone to charge and one connection to infotainment sounds like a better option to me.

That's too bad((

I've been using iphones all my life, and have switched to android last year. Now that I've gotten to know android as well, I understand that there are some things that I love better in android and some things I love in ios. So, I want to get the best of both worlds by having both devices. My android device support dual sim by the way, but I still want to have another ios device)))

If the carplay did support two devices connected, 1 via cable and 1 via bluetooth, then I would buy some cheap ios phone and have my android phone as main phone. Now, I guess I'll probably buy some of the newer iphones, and have it as my main phone.

Still no Waze! I thought that was automatic with iOS12

It’s in beta apparently. Hopefully available in the next few weeks.

Google maps works, thanks for the heads up.

Easy voice destination, works a treat.

I find the satellite view fascinating but a little distracting....

Since yesterday, Waze is working also with the Apple CarPlay :)

Satellite view doesn’t seem to want to display on my Columbus. Have it set in phone but still get standard view on Columbus.

Is there any obviuos I could be doing wrong ? 2018 Superb

If I remember correctly, you need to set it to satellite view on the car screen itself. Tap the normal Google map to display the settings cog on the top right and go from there....

Works a treat! Sattelite view is indeed a bit distracting. I also worry a bit about cellular data usage when using this view. Anybody know anything about that?

Thanks Cheshire bumpkin I was being a tool ....

Is there a good reason to use Google Maps over Waze?

Depends on your mapping preference - Waze uses its own maps (well, OSM and some editing) and data from Waze users - so changes to roads, layouts and 50mph limits on the A1 are quickly added.

Google has of course, Google Maps (which take forever to be updated...!), but the data is pulled from all Android phones (if user ticked the “spy on me” box) and users of Google Maps, so more accurate traffic information. Google Maps also benefits from the wealth of knowledge around local businesses and amenities that Waze misses.

Nope checked that. Waze was in the next screen but no Google maps. Ill probably continue using Waze but wanted to check the functionality of the Google maps.
