Can't believe how stupid some people can be. Hopefully your police will catch you before you are involved in any accident.

Wow take it easy man. It is for my kids not for me.

I'm sure that quite a few people have had the VIM mod so maybe not quite right to pick on people. ;)

In saying that, just a reminder to those who do that it isn't legal.

Also I've just noticed that this is in the MK3 section so my initial response was referring to the older Columbus as I'm not au fait with the VIM route of the newer version.

Explain that when the police stop you then.

He'll be able to watch himself being caught whilst watching " Caught on Camera "

Screen resolution is 480x800 on the other MIB2’s and 2.5’s so expect 480p.

It's 480P with really poor black levels and contrast but perfectly watchable.

I enabled VIM and didn't find it distracting but have since disabled it again. It is easily visible to any taller vehicle following.

I'm completely with you on this one - I rank it alongside the still absolutely insane practice of certain demographics who attempt to make their rear lights & brake lights as dull as possible by putting smoked glass and the like in.

"It's for my passenger" - until the really cool glass is available to all that would allow the driver and passenger to see two entirely different things on the screen, there is no possible way "it's for everyone in the car but me".

There are laws in place which would cover not paying attention but I didn't realise there was a law which said video's couldn't be displayed whilst in motion. Which law says that? And the difference between a video and Sat Nav being displayed whilst driving is?

But I totally agree, I think people unlock the screen simly because t's doable rather than for any practical purpose. Kids have access to phones or tablets etc. Why on earth would they squint their heads to watch a video on a small screen some distance away when they can watch and listen to it in private directly in front of them on a tablet?

It's important to remember, that anything that causes a distraction, could land you in bother with the plod or in an accident, even your bobby basic radio, changing gear, or scratching your head.

This is the original text of the 1986 Road Vehicles Construction and Use Regulations, though I think it has since been updated (particularly in reference to CRTs) it's difficult to navigate the amendments on a phone.

Television sets

109.—(1) No person shall drive, or cause or permit to be driven, a motor vehicle on a road, if the driver is in such a position as to be able to see, whether directly or by reflection, a television receiving apparatus or other cinematographic apparatus used to display anything other than information—

(a)about the state of the vehicle or its equipment;

(b)about the location of the vehicle and the road on which it is located;

(c)to assist the driver to see the road adjacent to the vehicle; or

(d)to assist the driver to reach his destination.

(2) In this regulation “television receiving apparatus” means any cathode ray tube carried on a vehicle and on which there can be displayed an image derived from a television broadcast, a recording or a camera or computer

Quoting UK rules and regulations to someone in Denmark is pretty pointless.

Locations don't show up on the mobile layout :wall:

Edit - that said, the person I replied to, who was asking about specific laws seems to reside in Scotland, so hopefully he'll take some benefit from the information.

He will indeed. 1986?  I think they were talking about portable TV's back then. The only 8" built-in screen I can remember was in James Bond's DB7.  Seriously, there are other laws which cover this - 'driving with undue care and attention' or whatever the phraseology is. There's no difference to having an infotainment system playing DVD and a tablet playing a DVD - amounts to same thing.

I don't think anyone back in '86 would have invisaged being able to type telephone numbers and postcodes in to the central console at 70mph. Hell it wasn't until 1990 when I started using a company mobile phone - about the size of a typical brick!  But as per above, playing DVD's thru the infotainment system is a pretty naff solution. You used to be able to  spec TV's on the infortainment systems on certain cars (might still be the case for all I know) but again even that option is naff.  Forget about the driver, not so long ago people were spec full blown infotainment systems with rear-seat DVD players...  Can you still have this? Even that's become redundant when a £99 tablet is superior in every way.

I factory ordered the TV option in an Audi S4 I purchased new in 2003, that can without VIM and when I asked about enabling VIM I was told that it was against not only UK law but also EU law - never checked myself as I couldn't be really bothered as I could still listen to the audio even if I couldn't watch the video.

If what I was told is true then for the original poster in Denmark it would be illegal to enable VIM.

Always wonder the point of these things - another option because it was possible rather than have any use.

Thought it be interesting to test above laws in 1986 Merc -v- 2018 Merc. Guess which is which...  :giggle:

And yet you'll get fined in 2018 if you use this because it's distracting.  It's a funny old world.

My mums A6 has a analog/digital TV tuner built into her MMI. Of course, you can't do jack without the handbrake on, but still, why would a business "person", or sales "person" want to watch TV, when their stationary...

Mind, the engine in most of the vehicles equipped with these features, have engines to get you to an appointment, probably hours before you're expected.

The 4.2 engine certainly shifts. How any of us haven't had points from driving it yet, I really don't know.
